dabbz··on “Attention assault” on Fandom
Had to go in and make sure fandom was blocked by my Kagi search filters. We're good now.
dabbz··on Nvidia gets 20% weighting, more investor demand; Apple demoted in major techfund
I'd equate Nvidia to being the seller of materials needed to make a specific shovel shown to be very good at digging gold. Microsoft and their kiln are buying all the materials to make their own shovel shop. They're also buying their own shovels. But that's probably being too pedantic here.
dabbz··on Microsoft will switch off Recall by default after security backlash
It's because there's a huge cloud first push internally. Leadership is trying to find any way they can find to leverage Azure and recurring revenue.
dabbz··on Ask HN: What makes Windows 11 perform much worse than Windows XP?
There was a lot of contention when Cortana was being integrated into the start menu directly. They have very temperamental performance tests for first paint on the start menu open. Cortana caused their 250ms (or something to that number) first paint time limit to exceed to over 5 seconds for first paint. After enough grumbling, they eventually decoupled Cortana from the start menu directly. Thankfully.
dabbz··on Google AI recommends adding Elmer's glue to pizza cheese after scanning Reddit
Kagi is $10/mo and still offers the ability to use AI if you wish (instead of shoehorning it in your face).
dabbz··on Ask HN: What makes Windows 11 perform much worse than Windows XP?
Added security layers as well.

dabbz··on Apple introduces M4 chip
When I was at Apple for a short time, there was a small joke I hear from the ex-amazonians there who would say "What's the difference between an Apple software engineer and an Amazon software engineer? The Amazon engineer will spin up a new service on AWS. An Apple engineer will spin up a new app". Or something along those lines. I forget the exact phrasing. It was a joke that Apple's expertise is in on-device features, whereas Amazon thrives in the cloud services world.
dabbz··on Refund fraud schemes on TikTok, Telegram cost Amazon, other retailers billions
The only new part of that behavior is the platform upon which it's being displayed and how more readily available it is to everyone.

If you removed Gen z/TikTok from that sentence. I'd have thought you were talking about millenials and MySpace/Facebook/Instagram. Before that I'd have thought you were talking about Gen X/Millenials and MTV. Before that News Papers, the news, and TV shows before that. It's human nature to want to flash success (even if faked), and sex has always sold. Nothing new here.

dabbz··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
The issue is actually that they are throwing a ton of money into Siri. That's partly why it appears to have gotten worse for most queries.
dabbz··on Google Search officially retires cache link
Bing has cached pages though?
dabbz··on A Windows Update bug is renaming everyone's printers to HP M101-M106
Presumably because it was a cost saving measure and they agreed with the cost savings, but I wasn't in the room where it happened. So all I can do is speculate unfortunately.
dabbz··on A Windows Update bug is renaming everyone's printers to HP M101-M106
QA elimination was a Terry Meyerson decision. There's a multitude of reasons he was asked to step down (allegedly).
dabbz··on Reasons to fight cashless contagion
My issue with cashless has nothing to do with privacy, but with card companies dictating what can and cannot be transacted by with their network.
dabbz··on Tesla owner received a $21,000 bill after the battery was damaged by rain
I swear I remember Tesla bragging about how they can turn into boats during deep water emergencies. The wheels being used as propellers, and the chassis being light enough to float. Feels like a fabrication of my mind now that I'm thinking about it...
dabbz··on Migrate Users from Keycloak to Zitadel
A couple of comments from skimming through it. If I'm migrating from Keycloak, I don't need to see how to set it up. I've already got a keycloak instance running if I'm interested in migrating.

I would have imagined if you are a Keycloak alternative, migrating would be easier. I would have imagined some kind of built-in integration. Provide a service token from Keycloak into your importer tool and let it run. This feels complicated and error prone.

I've already gone through the tedious effort of setting up Keycloak. You'll need some amazing value prop to convince me to set up a whole other system.

Additionally, I have more than Users configured on my keycloak. I have auth providers that are setup such as Epic Games, Riot Games, and Steam. I didn't see a way to migrate those values over.

dabbz··on 32 MiB Working Sets on a 64 GiB machine
Back when I worked on Windows, we would triage Windows Feedback hub reported issues once a sprint (~2 weeks). But only those which had at least 2-5 upvotes on them. One-off bugs usually meant they weren't being widespread impactful and weren't as higher priority on our list (even if that isn't the case).

But the feedback hub is an abyss of random complaints to filter through. Sometimes we'd see items like "Windows wouldn't save my word document and now I hate windows" and being on the networking team were like "uhhh thanks"

dabbz··on Apple has what it needs to launch its own Google replacement
Spotlight is already their search engine. You can search their app store, movies catalog, the web, etc. They're already doing this.
dabbz··on Throwing away 10 months of work after 2 months on the job
Was it though? I mean, the goal was SSR, but if they had a fully functioning site sans SSR, why not ship now, then deploy SSR whenever it gets baked into Angular?

They were using Angular's dependency block them when I don't think they really needed to be blocked to ship a product.

dabbz··on EU opens Microsoft antitrust investigation into Teams bundling
Apple uses their internal apps (Mail, Calendar, Pages, Numbers, Keynote), Slack, and of course the dreaded Webex. You can get licenses to the MS suite of products but most dogfood internal releases of the apps. (source: worked at Apple in 2020).
dabbz··on Ask HN: Any good open source alternatives to Google Analytics?
I like that plausible is cookie-less, meaning no gdpr cookie banner. I also like that it obeys ad-blockers by default which lets people easily subscribe to their own privacy settings.
dabbz··on 2500 Job apps, 46 interviews, 1 offer
At those numbers, something is wrong with their process. Poor resume formatting/content, bad social skills during interview process. That's barely 2% call-back rate after an application.
dabbz··on Scaling to around 15K requests per second with Java
Writing it in C isn't some magic bullet. Java you're spending your time optimizing the tail end of efforts, but C you're spending your time optimizing the bulk of the effort that Java gives for free. (not that I'm defending Java, but C being low level doesn't make it instantly easy to do faster stuff with).
dabbz··on Every person on the planet should have their own website
I mean, a list of every person and their thoughts with the ability to search is just Social Media. twitter, facebook, threads, discord, etc.
dabbz··on Why workers are still winning the return-to-office fight
When I was required to go back into the office, I told my manager I would begin my work day with my commute. Work day starts at 9am? That's when my hour long commute starts. So I wasn't able to take any meetings until 10am. Same with leaving work. Commute home takes 1.5 hours and day ends at 5? I'm leaving at 3:30 and can't take any meetings. My manager was fine with it since he also despised the RTO requirements. Felt like the little bit of power where I had control.

This is what happens when marketing gets too creative.
