dabbz··on GPT-5 leaked system prompt?
Sounds like it lost the plot to me
dabbz··on I dumped Google for Kagi
Sure, their index plays a small part of the equation, but they aren't reliant on any 1 index for their resultset. But sure, I guess their marketing worked.

The index was why I looked elsewhere.

The reason I switched to Kagi was because of their business model where I'm a customer not a product. So results are theoretically tailored for value to me not value to the company.

dabbz··on I dumped Google for Kagi
My decision to move away from DDG was when they blocked a website due to Bing blocking it. The block was inadvertent. But it showed the flaw in relying on an external provider for all your results. You're just using Bing with a different UI. Kagi having their own index (plus being enhanced by several others), was a huge selling point for me initially. Truly separated from a reliance on big-tech and their whims.
dabbz··on How did Facebook intercept competitor's encrypted mobile app traffic? (2024)
It's more about only exploiting people who have less money than you do.
dabbz··on Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years (1998)
Anyone who claims they're good at programming is still learning. We're all just, more comfortable with nuances but still really bad at it. Programming rocks to do things correctly is hard.
dabbz··on Cloudflare to introduce pay-per-crawl for AI bots
The more I read this, the more I feel like web attestation is going to be suggested as a way to prove AI bots vs humans.

They've been trying to push this through for a while now (to some moderate success). This may be the final push they are looking for to get it more thoroughly integrated in the web as a whole.

I know it wasn't mentioned anywhere here, but it's the silent part that fits this puzzle piece really well.

dabbz··on Apple weighs using Anthropic or OpenAI to power Siri
There's very low margin of error for a user trying something over speech (where they don't know what's actually capable). A user tends to try something once, if it fails they nearly never try it again. So now the question is, how do you get a user to try it again when you've fixed it? Alexa's approach has just about driven everyone mad "By the way, did you know..."
dabbz··on Show HN: New Ensō – first public beta
I know I've seen a handful of them no idea if they're real or not though:

dabbz··on iPhone customers upset by Apple Wallet ad pushing F1 movie
yea... I want to disable notifications but I don't want to miss my Apple Card payment notifications. Now my thought is to cancel my Apple Card so I can disable notifications and not miss anything. Notification ads are the modern day popup.
dabbz··on Show HN: Canine – A Heroku alternative built on Kubernetes
How do the Addons work? Are they just pre-built Dockerfile s? Or is there more to them? I'd love to request mariadb if there's something special beyond just a dockerfile/docker image.
dabbz··on I convinced HP's board to buy Palm and watched them kill it
I personally point the blame on their constant breaking of SDK and API surfaces. From 7 to 8 and then to 10, so many APIs that were in use just broke and had no real 1:1 equivalent. I also think the death of Silverlight had a hand in it.
dabbz··on I created Perfect Wiki and reached $250k in annual revenue without investors
Used to work for a company that owned a Teams extension. Teams updates will just randomly break your extension behavior without any warning or heads up. The migration to their "new teams" app was brutal.

Their SDK is built into 2 view render portions. 1 for in-message rendering using their own markup syntax for structuring views, and another that's just a web browser. So if you want to share components between 1 for messages and another for your pane, you can't.

Ingesting events is not very well defined. Everything gets sent to 2 endpoints you define and it's up to you to determine how to handle it.

Just some of the issues I came across in my short time at the company.

I also see it as a contingency plan. How do customers get help from you if your service has interrupted downtime? Relying on separate systems helps you be available still. It's one of those things that is not a problem until it's a problem.
dabbz··on Kagi Assistant is now available to all users
If you hit `a` in the search results page it'll take you to a chat interface to better grok the AI in a conversational format. Not exactly the same as perplexity still, but more ChatGPT akin. There's also a continue in assistant button at the bottom of the summary results to chat more with the query.

You can also go straight to the view by visiting `/assistant` and typing your query in there.

I still think preplexity has the AI search stuff down better, but getting both a "legacy style" search AND AI search, Kagi has better value to me imo.

dabbz··on Notion Mail Is Out
I honestly thought Salesforce was leaning this direction with Quip and Slack. Granted, Quip was never a good product. So I guess that fumbled.
dabbz··on A Reddit bot drove me insane
Yea after their blatant disregard for community after the API fiasco, I decided I didn't need to use Reddit anymore.

For a while I just used hacker news. Then I picked up TikTok. It isn't horrible but I sometimes have to be careful because the feed will start to try and feed me stuff that's just brain rot.

dabbz··on Honey has now lost 4M Chrome users after shady tactics were revealed
Also the current year can yield results sometimes (ie: 2025).
dabbz··on Can Earth's rotation generate power? Physicists divided over controversial claim
Futurama already did this episode though? It caused the Earth to stop spinning.
dabbz··on Microsoft's many Outlooks are confusing users – including its own employees
You access your Apple TV+ subscription via the TV App lol.
dabbz··on Show HN: LinkedIn sucks, so I built a better one
wow I loved Triplebyte. The startup scene in Seattle was so small compared to the Bay area, so finding interesting companies was tough. I also loved skipping some of these places' horrible phone screens. The triplebyte backpack is STILL my daily driver. I was very sad to see it had been acquired and shuttered by honestly a company selling a horrible way to interview.
dabbz··on FOSS infrastructure is under attack by AI companies
To be fair, they've been shown to still track unauthenticated users via fingerprinting and mapping it to known data from your friends who do have Facebook and upload this data (phone numbers, first, last name, etc). NOT having an account doesn't mean you aren't being tracked.

Not that it means you should just make an account to make their tracking easier...

dabbz··on Azure's Weakest Link? How API Connections Spill Secrets
They have a governance panel for all AWS services that approves design docs and API contracts (at least this is what I was told by an old manager who worked on AWS back in the day).
dabbz··on MacBook Air M4
I need them to get rid of the notch. It's so obnoxious. I'll run my M1 Air into the ground until they get rid of the notch.
dabbz··on I still like Sublime Text
That's a name I haven't heard in a long time. I loved Komodo.
dabbz··on Google is making AI in Gmail and Docs free, but raising the price of Workspace
I use Migadu for email. Great service that doesn't get in my way of using my email the way I need to (which isn't anything crazy honestly).
dabbz··on Solar power from space? it might happen in a couple of years
haha light on details
dabbz··on GitHub notification emails used to send malware
I've also been seeing Typeform emails coming from spam sources. Somehow people are using Typeform's positive reputation score to send emails to arbitrary emails.
dabbz··on Ask HN: What email service(s) do you use for your side projects?
+1 on Migadu. Service has been rock solid. Pricing is very reasonable. The few times I've needed customer support has been helpful.
dabbz··on Kagi Assistant
I personally switched away from DDG when they started removing results that were errantly removed by Bing. Since Bing is their upstream results provider, I didn't feel like I was getting away from the overreach of big tech, so I went to Kagi where they don't solely rely on upstream providers as they have their own crawler and such. The fact that they offer other great features like filtering results, and integrated AI makes it worth switching and paying for. Plus, I hate ads. Targeted or not. So I'm willing to pay to make that go away for a quality service.
