But as for your list I think you left out the Occam's razor option:
5) Rare earth hypothesis
"You can call people, browse the web, take photos, send text messages, and play Angry Birds."
5? Surely the author wouldn't be able to tie his own shoelaces with an IQ of 5...
Both these groups of people are happy to be, and be perceived as, creepy.
Though i'd contest the assertion that it uses my 'favourite graphics editor', my 'graphics editor' would be more appropriate ;)
There are plenty of on-line resources(1) to get started, but be aware that a lot of learning will be required. And that means a lot of failures. If you don't want your failures to be a part of your product/brand etc. then you should hire a professional(2).

I just don't see why the author would choose to use the loaded term 'normal people' instead of just 'people'.
edit: Unless he was being lazy and hanging his argument on an unfair caricature.
Which I believe he was.
Which isn't a polite thing to say no matter how you phrase it.
In the context of this article in particular, in order to bolster a flawed argument, 'normal people' are presented as people so stupid as to be unable to comprehend a second brand of telephone.
This is simply untrue, and to imply that people don't have the power to choose between two products, because 'normal people' are too stupid to use more than one type of phone is absurd.
If you have a problem with Apple's 30% cut of in app purchases, that's fine. But please use something a little more substantive than a silent, and most likely non-existent, underclass of sub-humans as your justification.
Normal people is a pointless term. You may as well just say people.
Saying 'These things weren't difficult for me, but they're a pretty big hurdle for people.' would sound horrible and arrogant, but at least it would be honest.
You, and the author of this article, shouldn't use such a lazy and condescending phrase.
The sparrow UI only shows one label in it's main list view, and then only the colour of said label. If you use labels to assist in scanning your inbox, then multiple labels on messages in your inbox increases their usefulness considerably.
In it's current state Sparrow obfuscates what i consider to be gmail's most valuable feature.
Free wifi, power points for recharging laptops (indoors and in the gardens surrounding), free bookable meeting rooms, designated quiet and non-quiet areas, a cafe, and even a recording studio.
Libraries are torch bearers of civilisation, and in an age when Alexandria has been reborn in an ethereal form, they are devoted to sustaining culture and knowledge in whatever manner is required.
