d33lio··on 'New car smell' is the scent of carcinogens
Most people live too long to begin with - I'm okay relishing the smells and scents of modern society and not worrying too much about it. Yes, everything is killing us and we're all slowly dying - why not enjoy the ride?
d33lio··on Ask HN: What are good online communities for (digital) health tech founders?
Anything but Clubhouse ;)
d33lio··on Don’t Underestimate the Power of a Walk
During my time in SV people seemed to always apologize when the weather wasn't perfect. They apologized when it was too "hot" barely breaking 80F and too cold when it got below 50F. Personally, "perfect" weather was depressing as all hell because seasons are actually awesome and help you keep track of time passing by. I'll never forget how much people on the east coast (especially boston) treasure the few summer months where you can be outside.
d33lio··on Don’t Underestimate the Power of a Walk
It's incredible to me how much of a difference in incentive to walk, even as someone who loves walking, between living in a place like Austin and New York City. Sure, climate is a part of it, but in New York I never minded taking a walk on a refreshing cold day. However, since Austin is so hot all the time and most sidewalks are either covered in homeless people or just in neighborhoods with far less going on I found that going for a drive replaced going for a walk (especially on 100F + days). The health implications of this are also pretty interesting. Keep on walking folks!
d33lio··on Ask HN: Do you wake up with anxiety?
Only if I put something off that I should have finished or started the following day. Usually this is only the case if I've actually been procrastinating for at least 2-3 days and really needed to start the following day.

I have ways to recognize this kind of anxiety now and basic steps / thought exercises to turn anxious energy into more productive positive thoughts.

d33lio··on The Impact of Chief Diversity Officers on Diverse Faculty Hiring
I've experienced this first hand.
d33lio··on Statement of SEC Regarding Recent Market Volatility
I generally find protests trite and idiotic, however if Yellen sides with hedge funds on this, and / or bails them out I'm going to find the nearest "peaceful" protest in NYC and bring as many people as I know.
d33lio··on Ask HN: Is there a quick summary of how much tax various corporations pay?
Agreed, but this kind of lobbying is equally distributed across party lines. The fact that half of Biden's cabinet is made of of ex FaceBook execs is just one example of that, similar to Bush's cabinet being packed with ex oil execs...
d33lio··on Tell HN: 19yo, bootstrapped SaaS, 250k ARR after 10 months
250k ARR might seem like a lot, but once you pay taxes, insurance, etc adding more than a handful of employees is going to dwindle what you're actually taking home. This is where having a degree counts and/or understanding how much work scaling is really going to take.

Incredible work, but also remember you are certainly not the norm. Be humble, acknowledge that your work has paid off and try to give back to any communities that got you to where you are today ;)

d33lio··on Show HN: I built Multy – Generate a short URL to share a list of websites
I second this. I went to college to study CS but most of my time learning to program was largely "self taught" lol.
d33lio··on Ask HN: Is there a quick summary of how much tax various corporations pay?
Smart people use loopholes. They are legal so why wouldn't you pay less tax?

If you hate large companies not paying their share, encourage government to do their fucking job and legislate in order to prevent companies from cheating the fed out of billions. Ironically, (as much as I hate the guy) Trump is the only president in recent history who's made clever moves to target Amazon. Unfortunately, companies lobby to have their tax cheating ignored by congress and government at large.

This is glaringly obvious, when Biden criticizes trump and rich americans for "cheating" on taxes where his returns clearly show he uses similar - sometimes identical means of dodging taxes.

d33lio··on Show HN: I built Multy – Generate a short URL to share a list of websites
Any plans to open source?
d33lio··on Show HN: Userbase – Auth and E2E encrypted storage in a few lines of code
Wow this is awesome!
d33lio··on Twitter sued for allegedly refusing to remove child porn
Even as someone who's glad Biden is now president - it's a bit unnerving to be living in a time where a service bans the sitting united states president without batting an eye but engages in legal battles to defend the distribution of child pornography on their "open platform".

I guess people posting spicy takes on government happens to be more of an active risk to society than literal child predators?

d33lio··on Who is able to make a whistleblower platform for Epstein/Maxwell whistleblowers?
You've effectively answered your own question sport.
d33lio··on Who is able to make a whistleblower platform for Epstein/Maxwell whistleblowers?
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to think that inserting yourself, a non state actor or intelligence asset, in between a conspiracy / murky operation of the Epstein sort might not be a great idea. Similar to how starting a militia for any cause is likely to attract negative attention from the gov boys...
d33lio··on Who is able to make a whistleblower platform for Epstein/Maxwell whistleblowers?
Who wants to paint a multiple targets on the back of their head?
d33lio··on Intel Problems
While I generally agree with this sentiment a lot of people don't realize how much enterprise supply chain / product chain vastly varies from the consumer equivalent. Huge customers that buy intel chips at datacenter scale are pandered to and treated like royalty by both intel and amd. Companies are courted in the earliest stages of cutting edge technical development and product development and given rates so low (granted for huge volume) that most consumers would not even believe. The fact that companies like Serve The Home exist proves this - for those who don't know, the realy business model of Serve The Home is to give enterprise clients the ability to play around with a whole data center of leading edge tech, Serve The Home is simply a marketing "edge api" of sorts for the operation. Sure it might look like intel isn't "competitive" but many of the intel V amd flame wars in the server space for un released tech have already had their bidding wars settled years ago for this very tech.

One thing to also consider is why amazon hugely prioritizes using their "services" and not deploying on bare metal is likely because they can execute their "services" on cheapo arm hardware. Bare metal boxes and VM's give the impression that customer's software will perform in an x86 esque matter. For amazon, the cost of the underlying compute per core is irrelevant since they've already solved the issue of using blazing fast network links to mesh their hardware together - in this way, the ball is heavily in Arm's court for the future of Amazon data centers, although banking and gov clients will likely not move away from X86 any time soon.

d33lio··on Show HN: BFS, Dijkstra and A* interactive demo made in React
Thanks for posting this! Your repo is a fantastic bit of reading for people who are curious how to make a non-standard visualization with React JS.
d33lio··on When Getting High Is a Hobby, Not a Habit
Seattle and SF are great examples of why public drug use is not a crime that doesn't inflict harm on the general non drug using public.
d33lio··on Why Signal don't add option to create an account without phone number?
Requiring a phone number simple way to mediate and bottleneck people trying to create bot accounts or abuse the service and also create a positive user onboarding experience to actually use the app. I disagree with the need for a phone number, but it makes the act of "registering" much easier. There's a reason Gmail and other similar "huge" services also require phone numbers for registration.
d33lio··on Why lasers are so brilliantly useful
I just bought a proper $250 Zebra scanner for some personal inventory projects / projects that utilize pdf417 and data matrix 2d bar codes and I have to say... this is the absolutely coolest piece of "plug and play" tech I've bought in years! Granted, these scanners largely use machine vision tech but lasers are still used as a form of "dumb" auto focus aid.

On another tangent, I still CANNOT believe that one company at least within the US controls 100% of the issuance of UPC codes. They sell them for up to *$30 A PIECE*! We need a "LetsEncrypt" for UPC codes - granted they serve an important role in load balancing across online stores, preventing counterfeit goods and in Amazon's case... penalizing sellers when they find the same UPC being sold on another online platform at a lower price ;)

Lasers will always be cool

d33lio··on Dropbox to cut 11% of its global workforce
In other words, they fired the bottom ~ 10% of people incapable of being productive (to their definition) while working from home...
d33lio··on Workaholism leads to health problems, work addiction risk depends on occupation
I'd regret not trying with every bit of my intellect and ability more than burning out in the process of trying. Up until my mid twenties I realized I'd been "protecting myself" and in effect making myself miserable because I kept telling myself that my goals would just lead to burn out and wouldn't be worth it.
d33lio··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
I'm waiting for the not so distant possibility of power companies deciding to cut service to companies who host services they don't approve of. This is not a joke.
d33lio··on BioNTech CEO applies Covid-19 vaccine's mRNA tech to multiple sclerosis
Big Pharma is likely very pro covid vaccine boon, 1) because some got a free loan to fund improvements of their own MRNA tech to catch up to Moderna's 10 year head start and 2) as an excuse to now field their MRNA tech with new vaccines and therapies when in prior years there would have been insurmountable barriers due to the FDA and lack of existing pharmacological precedent.
d33lio··on Uganda bans social media ahead of election
I mean, maybe it sounds like an over step for a country that has day to day violent rebel problems - but honestly... sounds based.
d33lio··on Visa and Plaid Abandon Merger After Antitrust Division’s Suit to Block
It blows me away our legal system can prevent this but not a tech social media plutocracy?
d33lio··on Sci-Hub Is Now on the ‘Uncensorable Web’
I think it's fair to say that there's an equal belief implicitly in the power of legal systems - but only when it's convenient for a point OP is making.

Thinking how a quick decision now will possibly turn in ten years down the road is how we can retain our rights but still move our democracy forward. A perfect example is championing the destruction and banning of all right leaning social media / twitter users... but when SciHub gets banned all the sudden its a travesty of free expression. Unfortunately, this line of reasoning is not a two way street. Even as a staunch liberal try my best to not let my anger at the other side get the best of me and play into the hands of the corporatists and statist who actually want to recreate what many refer to as fascism (melding of the state and corporate powers).
