czr80··on Obama wins back the right to indefinitely detain under NDAA
I'm sorry - did you not see the recent election where the Republican candidate ran on a platform of forcing 12m people to "self-deport"?
czr80··on Academic publishing as ruinous competition: Is there a way out?
But this avoids the central issue - how can we know if a paper helps people make progress on solving problems? Citation counts are just a proxy for exactly that - to move away from them you have to come up with a better proxy or evaluation method.

Good != Popular
czr80··on Gmail push notification no longer works with Mail on new iOS devices
Yes, I'm sure the license costs were killing them.
czr80··on About the Reuters article
He hasn't been exiled.
czr80··on If correlation doesn’t imply causation, then what does? (2012)
"Through what technique did they discern the difference between mere correlation, and a correlation with exploitable causality?"

Evolution - that is, assumptions that are accurate are favoured since they are more likely to lead to the animal surviving, vs embracing spurious correlations which are likely to get you killed.

Of course, this can break down if we try to apply the cognitive rules of thumb we've evolved to new domains outside our original evolutionary scope - our difficulties in thinking about statistics and probability are a great example of this. The math is trivial, but it just doesn't fit our brains very well without a great deal of cultural scaffolding.

czr80··on Microsoft reorganizes
Wow, re-organising the company by function. They're going all in on copying Apple. Who knows if it will work, but it's a fascinating experiment.

czr80··on Snowden: US hacks Chinese mobile phone companies, steals SMS data
How has he reversed his position on Gitmo?
czr80··on Why Netflix is producing original content
I'm curious: Is Spotify the future or iTunes?
czr80··on Why Netflix is producing original content
It doesn't matter that you don't want the sports channel, if you think it does then you haven't understood the economics argument.

You're also an exception, and if the cable company tried to optimise for you (today) they would lose much much more than they would gain.

czr80··on Most AB-tests will fail
This takeaway: "Don’t finish your tests before you have a statistically significant result" is potentially highly misleading.

czr80··on Shakespeare.txt.jpg: A JPEG compression experiment
I hear Yahoo might have one.
czr80··on Your idea sucks Why don't we be more honest when networking at startup events?
I was reminded of this post, which I think makes a good case for humility: http://37signals.com/svn/posts/3124-give-it-five-minutes

czr80··on Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes
It means Norway found oil and gas.
czr80··on Top 1% Control 39% of World's Wealth
Ok. I understand game theory. What do you mean that this "makes sense"?
czr80··on Elsevier journals: has anything changed?
It strikes me that the economics of product "bundles" seems to be one of those things that's just inherently hard for people to understand: http://www.isegoria.net/2010/04/paying-for-channels-you-neve...
czr80··on How My Mom Thinks Search Engines Work
People who click a search result and then immediately return to Google.
czr80··on How Google updated Android without releasing version 4.3
They'll change, some things will break, we'll endure thousands of blog posts proclaiming the end of the iPhone, 80% of devs will race to fix their apps, life will go on...
czr80··on San Francisco's Real Startup Secret Sauce
SF is a startup hub because it happened to get a little traction from a few early companies, and then network and scale effects helped it take off. Same reason Detroit was once a big auto hub, China is today a big manufacturing hub, Facebook the biggest social network, etc.

Once a regional agglomeration like this is established, it's hard for someone else to match (just like it's hard to set up a new Facebook).

And, also, once such a hub is established, people of course look for reasons to explain why it won. Mostly they're hagiographic "just-so" stories, of no real benefit to anyone looking to replicate it.

czr80··on Apple's horrible maps, part 3
If you were Apple, how would you fix this?
czr80··on Why is science behind a paywall?
Well, scientists do share information for free - they can, and do, just post it to their websites or a preprint archive like ArXiv.
czr80··on Why is science behind a paywall?
Actually, probably some journals could survive from advertising. But I'm a bit biased by thinking of mathematics journals, and trust me, you can't make that much advertising to mathematicians.
czr80··on Why is science behind a paywall?
The "markets" are too niche - ad supported works for mass market sites, not for specialist journals read by a few tens of people.
czr80··on Why is science behind a paywall?
Well, scientists still need a means to communicate with each other - I wouldn't want to mix the needs of professional communication with that of popular communication.
czr80··on Amazon hints at sales figures for AWS
Impossible to enforce - companies are free to shift things around internally to produce any numbers they want, as long as the totals are correct.
