czechdeveloper··on Atlantic Ocean's Circulation Is Weakest in 1,600 Years
You should prepare for disasters as they really happen. Could you survive OK in Portoriko (or your local type of similar disaster)? Would you have way to generate power at least to have light and radio? Do you have friends in other countries/places that would help you relocate? Do you have water and food for few weeks to survive initial blast? What about medicine you need? Do you have cash to buy basics until electricity is setup again?

But you are right that if you prepare too well. So well that it's visible, it is likely that it will be taken from you. Or you can end up as that guy who prepared for zombie apocalypse and lost it all (100k USD invested) in hurricane.

It will never (with exception of all out nuclear war) be total world annihilation. Yet most people seems totally unprepared for stuff that just keeps happening. And it will likely be getting more frequent with climate change.

I see quite an opposite. There are new languages to replace some old, but old stay. And one could say that JavaScript today is almost different language than ES6 was.

By new coll languages I mean Go or Rust. Java and C# are still prominent in business sphere. And I can see push of functional languages as well, such as F#, but that is not so big pressure.

What I also see is big fracturing in ecosystems. When I started developing, I used .NET. I could make WinForm application for Windows and WebForm for Web.

Now there is MVC, Razor Pages, Single page apps (where you have to choose from many JavaScript frameworks). For Desktop app you can write WinForms, WPF, but Electron with .Net seems to be also popular now.

It seems no two companies are using same stack anymore. For me it's becoming quite overwhelming.

Good luck convincing your friends to buy any sort of IM application. It's already difficult now to convince them "just for privacy".

I would just delete that part if it can't be solved. Smaller issues with code are, that you create new string just to compare it (ToLower makes new instance), when you can achieve this just by using proper comparer such as

    ex.InnerException.Message.IndexOf("duplicate", StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase) > -1
Good idea would also be to check for existence of Inner exception at all

    ex.InnerException?.Message.IndexOf("duplicate", StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase) > -1
But I would just live without that check to prevent magical behavior.

czechdeveloper··on Bitcoin May Split Many Times in 2018
If you have your private key, you can just use same key to trade forked coins (using given coin's wallet). If you don't I guess you depend on whoever has your key. But rule of thumb is, you don't own a key, you don't own a bitcoin.

I would just move original coins to different wallet first as I'm not sure if same transaction cannot be replayed on main bitcoin chain.

You can check here what you can get for your addresses https://btcdiv.com/

I just makes me sad for a developer that actually created that language, who put lots of knowledge and work in it. And then someone (I assume not same person) try to propagate it using such stupid example.
czechdeveloper··on Bitcoin has little shot at ever being a major global currency
People bought gold because it's historical stability.

People buy Bitcoin because of it's volatility and crazy growth.

Gold could survive wars, you can pack small fortune to take on person, it's recognized by everyone.

I just don't see how Bitcoin fits the picture here.

czechdeveloper··on Ocean's Oxygen Starts Running Low (2016)
This vastly underestimates human capacity to destroy earth, which is also reason why lost of people do not believe in climate change to begin with.

If we go, all vertebrates go too. At least all cat and bigger sized.

Life will survive, but I would not call if "fine". Is it still fine if it's only microscopic life? When it stops being fine?

czechdeveloper··on Basecamp doesn’t employ anyone in SF, but now we pay everyone as though all did
To be honest, I have never seen rates so high in Prague either. Very good offer for me would be 42 USD/hour for longer term project, 35 being more standard (yet still good). I currently live outside of Prague (regional city) and salary of employed developer (I know, not fair comparison) here are less than 14 USD/hour. Actually when I claimed I would not work for that much, I was told everyone wished for that kind of salary.

I should really look into what is to be known to get 100 USD/hour for medium term projects in Prague. I would be able to live from 2 to 3 month project for full year.

EDIT: This comment was incorrect and I do not wish for more down votes.

ORIGINAL: I believe it should be about 100 USD/hour for skilled consultant, but maybe someone with more experience can correct that.

But how would you move around? Public transportation cannot reach everywhere. I would just stop seeing my family without having a car.

Can you please explain this? It makes no sense to me (as c# developer) that `["1", "2", "3"].map(parseInt)` whould get different result from `["1", "2", "3"].map(a => parseInt(a))`.

Why are they not equivalent?

EDIT: Never mind, another comment explained this.

czechdeveloper··on E-Bikes Offer Entry-Level Electric Transportation
I'm from Europe, limits on electric assistance here are quite low as far as I know (25km max, no support without pedaling, 250W engine output).

But I agree, my main concern is difference in speed with cars. Worst case I could use electric scooter just for "last mile" and use public transportation. That is something ebike will again have more problems with.

czechdeveloper··on E-Bikes Offer Entry-Level Electric Transportation
I've been wondering about buying electric kick scooter for some time now. Bikes can be dangerous where there is no separate infrastructure for them, but scooter you can drive on sidewalk in places that are almost void of pedestrians (this is my case). It's also way easier to take with in store or office. Pity there is no "rent for day" just to try it out.

I'd love to switch my car for electric, but that is still expensive.

I wonder for past few years about backup language/stack/job for me, because my technical life has been MS only. And quite often discontinued tech (Silverlight, WebForms).

I should get that going I guess. I just can't decide what to learn and it's difficult to find time (nodejs? Go? Python?).
