They do not need their first adopters anymore.
Like thermostats. I've read about Nest thermostat crash on loss of Internet connection which result in dangerous temperature loss in infants room. We can make those thinks more robust for years, but it does not have an app and does not make so much money.
Food supply was original comment. Most people do not have food for week. (I compare it to always stocked pantry of my grandparents). Any small - one week - disruption can result in big problems for some.
But we are moving to hi-tech just in time system everywhere, which are dependent on Internet, GPS, advanced forecasting etc. Those systems can be for example hacked and not functional for days.
I don't care about Amazon delivery being late.
I try to live simply, it always gave me great pleasure, or at least less stress to own little. But I moved away from this a bit recently as I have family and also I feel like I should be less dependent on surrounding (ie. have good tools, have some backup items etc.).
Nice vacation? All I think is footprint I'm making and how I'm destroying that very beautiful nature I wanted to visit.
Start enterprise? I'll just add another CO2 to provide people with service they don't really need to survive.
Like this new gadget? I can't buy it, I don't need it and again, just another item in vicious cycle or consumption.
But what can I do. I want my enjoyment of those stuff back. I want to be motivated to create and experience, yet I can't as I see the other side of that. I want to enjoy good stuff, but I can't.
I should investigate this bit more to get closer to SF salaries if possible.
In terms of politics, I see just deterioration in my region. We get technology we want (smartphones), but not what we need (carbon sequestration, better food sources). Our current tech is ruining the planet.
And as a developer, I see a lot of new and different, but little better. But that might be also connected to my world view already.
