I used the app when it was first launched and as the post suggests, whilst it was an interesting way to find new movies, that focus alone wasn't enough to get me engaged as the days went on. I just ended up selecting the movies I was gonna watch depending on their streaming availability on other platforms. Nowadays however, with the way they pivoted towards focusing on how a person felt about the movie they watched, it became an entirely different experience that I couldn't find on other places. Im genuinely interested in seeing how my friends reacted to a movie, more than just knowing whether they deemed it was a 4 star movie. When I see that they were shocked by a movie or utterly bored, it sways my movie selecting experience towards this new logic which I find very appealing. To founders of other startups, I would suggest that the moral of the story is to "listen" to your users and be ready to shift the focus or logic of your product towards something unexpected that might have seemed secondary at first.
Well, there are some people, like myself, who are interested in seeing ads. The reasons vary. For example, im on the lookout for an upgrade to a vps. Im getting lots of targeted ads with offers and specs. I consider that a good thing. I also like to know when my friend's startups are advertising and how they are doing it. Not everyone dislikes ads enough to go through the technicalities of installing an ad blocker.
They already answered on these comments with regards to their already functioning revenue model. Banks pay them for securing their sites. They're a YC startup. You're on HN and you're afraid of trying out new technologies because they're offered by new startups?
"Religion is the opium of the people". Clearly, when one develops a product that rubs people the right way and inundates them with the right dopamine levels, one has achieved a product whose level of flexibility towards pricing, re-use and viralization is given.
Interesting. There's one bug though, when you select another country like Colombia, for instance, you have to enter the value in its currency. When you do, in that case 1k usd is 2 Million, the calculation seems to convert that to millions of dollars. Its not entirely clear which money format you should use.
It would be great if profiles could be searchable through the three hashtags one can use on the profile. That way one would not necessarily only rely on sending an email, but would always be available to the pool of hiremyfriend users who are looking for growth hackers or ruby devs, etc.
Indeed, the times I've worked for someone else, I've never had to show my resume. I find it more important to highlight very specific milestones I have accomplished and by doing so, the employer has a good idea of what he can attain from me by hiring me.
He seems to fail every time:
"In April 2011, Klayman filed a lawsuit against Facebook, accusing the social media website of "negligence" for not responding quickly enough to calls to take down an anti-Israel "Third Intifada" page and demanding $1 billion in damages. Facebook representatives responded that the suit was "without merit." In December 2012, the district court dismissed the complaint on 47 U.S.C. 230 grounds.
Also in 2011, Klayman represented Joseph Farah in his unsuccessful defamation lawsuit against Esquire magazine. In July 2011, Klayman represented Bradlee Dean in his unsuccessful defamation lawsuit against Rachel Maddow; Dean was eventually ordered to pay defendants' legal fees that totalled nearly $25,000.
In 2012, Klayman filed on behalf of a Florida resident an unsuccessful challenge to Barack Obama's placement on the primary ballot and claimed that the latter is not a natural-born citizen."
Do you have ways of augmenting your daily buy limits as a company? Or will your transactional capacity be capped at the rate you've been managing during the past three months?
The launch was scheduled for 2 p.m PST/ 5 p.m EST.
If it blasts off (weather is an issue), the 40-meter-tall Antares rocket will be the biggest thing ever launched from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility. It will be visible up and down the Eastern Seaboard, from Charleston, South Carolina to Portland, Maine.
Enter The Void. A powerful parade of colors that takes you through the different stages of death. One does not simply watch this movie. One experiences it.
Fair enough. Nevertheless, a company like Google could certainly afford to be gracious with developers and let them contribute to the future product's success without making them pay a hefty amount.
"Explorers will each need to pre-order a Glass Explorer Edition for $1500 plus tax and attend a special pick-up experience, in person, in New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles." Interesting. Now we gladly apply for the chance to pay a company $1500 plus tax for a product.
Notice how nobody was interested in whether Marissa Mayer had any feedback for SeatGeek on the video of their pitch. I suspect that question session would work out quite differently today.
Predicting the output and conclusion date of the work of 350 developers is not an easy task. I bet not even their CEO has a clear date in mind. The french retailer is probably just seeking PR attention.
Ok, im viewing your site from an 11 inch macbook air. Things to consider: the email input should be above the fold. I should see it as soon as I land on your page. Instead of saying "Enter Your E-Mail to Request an Invite" you could put "Claim Our Early Adopter Badge", something of the sort. The logo is too big and should be higher, in order for everything else to fit. I would rearrange the copy of the main message, making it say Hire a Neighbor before the other part. That text could be smaller and with a cooler font. The image of the map on the phone should be clear and have the proper dimensions of an iphone app.
All of that said, your landing page should not be your MVP. You'd do well to make a mobile site that looks and feels exactly like your app would feel. Then the demo for the startup weekend could be a video showing you navigating through the mobile site.
Its called a UDRP, costing around 1 or 2 thousand dollars and takes some time to get. Its also dependant on various factors like whether theyre using the domain in bad faith. If you happen to own the trademark of the exact name that their domain uses, excluding the .com of course, you have a very strong chance of winning the domain. Here's the general info on a UDRP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Domain-Name_Dispute-Res...
Solitary confinement... What kind of justice system still considers this kind of punishment a valid form of reformation. Heres an insightful article by The NewYorker with regards to the ethical implications of solitary confinement: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/03/30/090330fa_fact_...
Im interested in checking out the app, I just sent a request for info with my email {username} at gmail. I happen to be a growth hacker that will be living in SV from january onwards. Ill be participating in the AngelHack demo day. I'd be happy to share strategies over a cup of coffee over there. Cheers.
Depending on your startup, (1) just equity can certainly be attractive to the right person. (2) The kind of marketing experts you're looking for can be found by searching on google for blogs relating to growth hacking, SEO, social media, customer acquisition, UX usability, etc. (3) I havent heard of Consulting Firms that do marketing for equity. There is a big company in Germany that takes equity in startups in exchange for ATL media campaigns (on tv, radio, etc). Its a long process though, like with any other investor.
Could you please share your Beta version so that interested parties can contact you?
Editor’s Note: The author of this opinion piece, aka “weev,” was found guilty last week of computer intrusion for obtaining the unprotected e-mail addresses of more than 100,000 iPad owners from AT&T’s website, and passing them to a journalist. His sentencing is set for February 25, 2013.
Design looks great. Only thing is that its forgetting me every time i visit the main page. Im logged in, then i click the logo on the far left, im back on the main page and no longer logged in.
