cylinder714··on Common Lisp: An Interactive Approach (1992)
It's better, perhaps, to link to the parent page:

https://cse.buffalo.edu/~shapiro/Commonlisp/

Shapiro mentions "An even more up-to-date, faster introduction to Common Lisp" therein, if anyone's interested.

cylinder714··on HP Envy Move: portable allinone PC with battery, handle
I think this is pretty slick, and I give HP credit for coming up with something original.

My main computer is a small form factor PC with a big monitor, but the combination isn't easy to move around owing to the cables, and sometimes I'd like to work in the dining or living room. Something like this would be perfect: just unplug it from the mains, no interruptions. Clever!

cylinder714··on Ask HN: Why can't jets use a rocket engine like Raptor?
Jets fly in the atmosphere, and they use air to burn fuel. Rockets fly outside the atmosphere, so they have to carry oxidizer with them. Rocket planes have existed, but because the have to carry both elements to function, they're limited in how much payload they can carry and how far they can go.

But that isn't all that took place; please read the linked post.

I think the author's wishes should be respected above all. Don't you?

cylinder714··on Rasperry Pi 5 Specs and Images Leaked from Element14?
https://rpilocator.com/ is the primary resource. I see 8-gigabyte Pi 4s available from U.S. vendors at least every two to three days.

Vilros.com isn't on their list of vendors, but they have them, too.

cylinder714··on MenuetOS
My understanding is that Kolibri is a hostile fork of Menuet, and that Menuet's author closed it in retaliation.

cylinder714··on ‘California Forever’ website touts the city tech billionaires trying to build
Fairfield, just to the west of Travis AFB and the property in question, is my hometown, so I'm familiar with the area.

Summers there are hot, and the wind is strong and constant, which is why it's a fine location for airports and wind turbines. How people there are going to tolerate the heat and wind, plus the constant air traffic from the base, is a good question. I expect that if this plan succeeds, there will eventually be pressure to close Travis entirely.

cylinder714··on Jacobin: A more than minimal JVM written in Go
I can see it being used to bootstrap OpenJDK, particularly on platforms other than Windows, macOS or Linux.
cylinder714··on Alpine
Thank you for the writeup. I've delayed setting it up, but this is what I needed to get it running.

I used Pine, Vim and the par formatter (like a smarter version of fmt) on a Windows 2000 box years ago. That combination was just enough to make Windows bearable.

cylinder714··on 'Mystery company' buys land worth $800M near Travis AFB, raising concerns
Interestingly, for my fellow aviation buffs, the Navy is considering replacing the E-6Bs (built upon old Boeing C-135s—military 707s) with new C-130J planes, with stretched fuselage and those cool scimitar propellers. They're more fuel-efficient, I suspect, and they can operate out of rough airstrips.

Yes, and it's also the home of E6-B Mercury "TACAMO" communications aircraft operated by the U.S. Navy:

https://www.dailyrepublic.com/all-dr-news/solano-news/milita...

This unit pretty much represents the last remaining Navy presence in the Bay Area. Ironic, given the history of the Navy there, beginning with the establishment of the shipyard on Mare Island before the Civil War, and the first Navy radio station on the West Coast in 1904:

cylinder714··on Ask HN: What is the equivalent of a shopping mall for engineers/programmers
In Silicon Valley, it was the combination of Fry's Electronics, Micro Center, Weird Stuff Warehouse and a couple other stores, and the tech bookstores Computer Literacy, Stacey's Books and Digital Guru. The future, unevenly distributed.

No, I love it. I used to have to replace the Micro-USB cable for my old Nexus 6 phone every 9-12 months due to wear on the male connector. My four-year old Galaxy A50 still happily connects to its original cable.

I understand the issues with power delivery, but as a mechanical interface, I think it's great. What's driving your frustration?

cylinder714··on Mercedes-Benz takes in-car voice control to a new level with ChatGPT
Good grief, yes to this. One of my many concerns with EVs is the insistence of automakers to stuff these with surveillance tech. I suspect it's so that Tesla, GM, et al can sell data to marketers.
cylinder714··on ‘A sense of betrayal’: liberal dismay as Muslim-led US city bans Pride flags
