cybersol··on The blind mind: No sensory visual imagery in aphantasia
This is 100% me when I remember a beach scene, but my mom sees a photorealistic photo in her mind. This photo or movie quality seems more typical for memories for most people, whereas for synthetic imagination I think the ability to make it photorealistic varies more.
cybersol··on The blind mind: No sensory visual imagery in aphantasia
So I have aphantasia, and I first realized when talking to someone about mental images and memories. They have photorealistic pictures in their mind, or even video scenes like a movie. At my best I have something like an expressionist painting with words and concepts arranged spatially on blobs of color representing the object. More typically, just blackness.

Here is another description of it, and a test in the first part: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewsGmhAjjjI

You make good points about the opportunity costs of fund allocation. However, large bureaucracies are often so inefficient and ineffectual, that well allocated funds can still result in no useful outcome. That makes the positive outcome here more impressive.
cybersol··on Ask HN: What are your “brain hacks” that help you manage everyday situations?
Remind yourself that you deserve to take up space as much as many people. Confidence and owning your space are some of the most manly traits. When you're confident, you can also be ok with whatever amount of alone time you need.

At least all is not lost:

  Welcome to PyPy.js!

I have used conky to do a lot of similar things in the past. It has a GUI window, but is configured and displays mostly in text.
cybersol··on How Amazon’s Bottomless Appetite Became Corporate America’s Nightmare
It could mean that, but in Amazon's case it means they are reinvesting all of their earnings back into new internal investments, which leads to small annual profits.
cybersol··on How Amazon’s Bottomless Appetite Became Corporate America’s Nightmare
So much this. A commerce company needs peak compute in December and tax companies in March, so why not share server farms? If you extend that idea to a business model, you make a normally internal cost center into an external facing revenue generator.
cybersol··on Police Homicides in the United States
The article says that 75% are killed by people close to them. Of the remaining 25% killed by strangers, two-thirds of those are killed by non-police-officers.
cybersol··on Face ID, Touch ID, No ID, PINs and Pragmatic Security
Just because you are innocent and have nothing to hide, it does not mean they cannot still use the evidence you provide to convict you. Basically, it comes back to the same reason that many lawyers generally advise you to never talk to the police (1). IANAL.

cybersol··on Kerbal Space Oddities
Great article, but I am pretty sure Jebediah Kerman is NEVER shaken, even if he had to face off against Chuck Norris.
cybersol··on Show HN: Using city permits to map Sonic.net fiber
I posted it to the Access forum there.

Thanks for the map, it is now clear to me that they will not get to many of the hills of the city for quite some time.

cybersol··on Linux utils that you might not know
Even as a decades long 'nix user, I had never used join until recently, which joins lines of two files on a common field. I used to turn to fgrep or a Python script to solve a whole class of problems join can help solve on the command-line.
cybersol··on Problems I Have with Python
It's definitely not perfect, though ultimately most trade-offs in Python come down to readability. I once went down the rabbit hole (3 library iterations) of overloading operators to enable a very shell and pipe oriented syntax, only to later realize how much harder my 6-month old code was to read even for me. So I've come to appreciate Guido's experience for the trade-off between expressive power and readability.

For instance in the things you suggest, reduce used in its most straightforward manner is readable, but it can also be used to enable some of nastiest, most head scratching one liners. Lambda is useful for small things like callbacks, but readability should lead you to a real function with a descriptive name sooner rather than later.
