cyberfart··on My notes on Gitlab's Postgres schema design (2022)
There are also reasons outside infosec concerns. For example where such PKs would be directly related to your revenue, such as orders in an e-commerce platform. You wouldn't want competitors to have an estimate of your daily volume, that kind of thing.

I believe you're referring to Clean Room Design[1].

cyberfart··on Open-source, not open-contribution
> It'd be demotivating if someone thinks they can do your project better than you can, right?

This would be valid thinking though should the project go inactive.

I was so happy after seeing this thinking, "so amazing of them to let me check it out without having to register" only to discover that it led to a register form :(

cyberfart··on GitHub repo issue spam in Chinese
Possibly coincidence but started around today's google outage, spamming multiple issues per minute, first one at 1358 CET.

Edit: fix typo

cyberfart··on Distributed Systems Reading List
Another really good reading about distributed systems is Kyle Kingsbury's (aphyr) distsys-class notes:

cyberfart··on SaltStack Mining Attack
This is reminiscent of

    int getRandomNumber()
    {
        return 4; // chosen by fair dice roll.
                   // guaranteed to be random.
    }

cyberfart··on I turned my interview task for Google into a startup
I love metrics that are essentially irrelevant but sound very cool like "our BETA users have burned two million calories collectively and lifted 500,000 tonnes".
cyberfart··on WhatsApp's End-to-End Encryption Is a Gimmick
Sensationalist title; from article:

> “End-to-end encryption” sounds nice — but if anyone can get into your phone’s operating system, they will be able to read your messages without having to decrypt them.

cyberfart··on Momo-3 is Japan's first private rocket to reach space
To be clear, only one amateur rocketry team (the one in the link) ever made it to space.
cyberfart··on Ask HN: What are some repetitive tasks you do at work?
This is something definitely worth automating in my experience.
cyberfart··on Ask HN: What are some repetitive tasks you do at work?
Can you not solve this by not closing your essential programs and putting your device to sleep instead of powering it off?

PS: Don't do this without battery/ups fallback.

cyberfart··on A family tracking app was leaking real-time location data
Yes but until that's decided in court, is this not confessing to a crime?
cyberfart··on A family tracking app was leaking real-time location data
> We contacted one app user at random who, albeit surprised and startled by the findings, confirmed to TechCrunch that the coordinates found under their record were accurate.

So they accessed the database as well as personal information of users? Is this not a crime whether or not the database was unprotected?

cyberfart··on The Tech Industry Has a Drinking Problem and It Is Hurting Diversity
"I believed in ... for ... years" is not an argument, it provides no facts, it serves as a tool to psychologically influence the reader.
cyberfart··on The Tech Industry Has a Drinking Problem and It Is Hurting Diversity
> Before I begin, I want to say that I’ve spent around 10 years curating this opinion.

I don't know what to make of this. Did it require 10 years to write this article? Or is it just "I know what I'm talking about, I've spent 10 years having this opinion"?
