cyber··on New PlayStation 3 Hack May Be One That Sony Can’t Stop
There has been a lot of comments on the piracy aspect, but I think the cheats are just as important, if not more so.

With the assumption that the vast majority of players don't want to jump through the hoops to deal with keeping updated on "liberated" firmware versions, the piracy threat is contained to a small population, not likely to damage the bottom line.

However, the risk to online play is greater with cheat enabled clients. A single cheat client can cause great havoc within a game instance. Even if the individual device can be banned, another actor can take it's place. Legitimate clients will get frustrated quickly on a prolonged attack. And that is where the real damage is.

I remember buying games in 1980's. Over $130 in today's dollars. I do seem to remember them having a pretty good amount of play time in them. Of course, in the Apple II/Commodore world, we really didn't have to worry about keeping up with hardware upgrades. ;)
cyber··on EA “Gives Away” 1000s Of Free Games Due To No Server-Side Validation
Ironically, EA will probably try to claim the "success" of the promo by using numbers for all the games claimed as if they were all discrete individuals.

While at the same time trying to claw back the licenses.

cyber··on Mobile version of IE10 won’t run Flash by default
NoScript under Firefox, and ClickToFlash* under Safari can help the transition to a Flash-free environment.

In New York it was red honey. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/30/nyregion/30bigcity.html

Looks like a few of you are a bit politically sensitive! ;)
cyber··on Craigslist launches Map View for apartment hunting
Maybe. But there was a Yahoo Pipes example a good number of years back that allowed even more flexibility than what craigslist has done. IIRC, the Pipes author had a dog and was searching for an apartment that allowed pets and was within a certain distance of a park.

This. But without the "/sarcasm". :)
cyber··on Program above and beyond your actual ability by using FreeMind
Can you expand on why it's better? Consider I haven't used either, why would I choose one over the other?
cyber··on Ask HN: Is there room for another e-mail client?
Step one: stop and think what you liked and why. GMail worked for you. Why? The reason it works for me is MH-like semantics, proper MIME handling, and distributed/"cloud based" storage.

I'd take a locally hosted solution in a heartbeat. (Even if I did have to write hooks for calendar integration.)

cyber··on Why does iTunes 10.7 try to contact the domain bogusapple.com?
Oddly, I keep getting requests from people trying to buy my "DNS configured, but no web site" domain I use for testing. (Right now DNSSIG is expired, and if one examines the rest of the headers, it's obvious it was configured expired.)
cyber··on Why you can't change the shipping address for your new iPhone 5
Yeah, I'm doubting that. My shipping address was old, and didn't match my billing address. A) it accepted it, B) I could change it.
cyber··on Responding to Wired's ad hominem hatchet job
Sadly, there is a growing contingent amongst the computer security/hacker scene who, instead of actually looking to improve things, are looking to be indignant about something.

A major conference has recently had to deal with issues stemming from a complaint about harassment that wasn't actually a complaint. It was never reported to staff, nor venue, nor law enforcement. Instead, twitter and blog posts were used.

cyber··on The weakest link by far is Apple
And yet they were so happy that someone off of craigslist was willing to accept a check.

(private browsing, throwaway email, tor, check cashing place, etc.)

cyber··on Programmers Don't "Build" Programs
... and this is how we get crappy software. If anything we need more adherence to the construction, specifically, "review". In construction, things are reviewed, certified, analyzed, and tested.

I don't garden like I write software, and I definitely don't write software like I garden. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go do something about these ground squirrels eating all the tomatoes.

cyber··on The U.S. Senate has blocked the Cybersecurity Act of 2012.
The kind that has abortion and firearms clauses in a "Cyber Security" bill.
cyber··on We are Colorblind
Speaking with Dan, he's indicated that a research organization is making heavy use of his app. Evidently they are close to trials on gene therapy.
cyber··on The U.S. Senate has blocked the Cybersecurity Act of 2012.
They were starting to pile on completely unrelated riders, it needed to go regardless of the contents.

Right. They are for being hit on badly.
cyber··on Homeland Security Issuing Its Own DMCA Takedowns On YouTube To Stifle Speech

cyber··on VIA launches $49 Android PC
What he's saying is that it's a bare component. Generally a PC is a usable system.

One will still need to add a powersupply and case at a minimum. (And then you can plug in your power, keyboard/mouse/monitor, etc.)

cyber··on [dead]
Volume and longevity do count for something. That said, modern day PayPal is nothing like what Max founded.
cyber··on Ask HN: How to move away from Gmail
Ah, my fellow geeks. Excellent discussions on replacements for the backend infrastructure and handling. :)

Now, does anyone have a replacement for the UI/client? Something good and multiplatform that a) deals well with multi media (images, attachments, etc) and b) still retains MH semantics?

The use of MH style semantics is what attracted me to the whole thing back in 2004.

cyber··on Using Gmail, Calendar and Docs without an Internet connection
Limited to Chrome, this is still non-standard.
cyber··on Why Google+ Has Already Failed
Yes. Calendar. It was built because the purchased solution sucked. (And was insecure. Passwords in a flat file in one's home directory?)

Gmail also comes the closest of any webmail interfaces to MH.

cyber··on Ask HN: How to inspect a Macbook?
Well, at this point, it's all idle curiosity on her and your part. The first thing you should have done is image off a couple of copies of that drive. One for archive, the other to examine.

A ram snapshot would have been good as well.

cyber··on Help Protect the World from Patent Litigation. Meet the IP Collective.
Well, OIN seems to be mostly Linux focused, for one.
cyber··on I.M.F. Hit by Sophisticated Cyberattack
They actually used the phrase "spear phishing", but then failed to describe it properly. Spear phishing is much more targeted, sometimes as finely honed to one or two people.

Of course, the rhetoric is always hyped. I've seen over the years where individual connections in a port scan was counted as a separate attack. Without details, this could be similarly "simple".
