cyanbane··on Smart TVs sending sensitive user data to Netflix and Facebook
How do Doctor's that use TVs like this in meeting rooms get around HIPAA? or other places with PII, etc? With so much stuff being thrown to TVs now, a lot of times they are inheriently monitors, and there are very few people who think taking a screenshot of a monitor is not invasive.
cyanbane··on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp outages
Browsing it right now is a good exercise for devs who need to make sure they think about low vision/blind users who browse via audio, etc.

ie "Image may contain: a dog, sunglasses"

cyanbane··on Google to restrict modern ad blocking Chrome extensions to enterprise users
Can't suggest pi-hole enough for a small personal network. Happily donate to them. On a larger scale, I am not sure...

cyanbane··on EA reportedly under criminal investigation in Belgium due to FIFA's loot boxes
This is a great point. No post-market locks the user into only purchasing via loot crates.
cyanbane··on EA reportedly under criminal investigation in Belgium due to FIFA's loot boxes
Other than being digital, how are loot boxes different than being M:TG cards or baseball card packs?
cyanbane··on US cell carriers are selling access to real-time phone location data
Does anyone know of a way you can request consent status from your service provider?
cyanbane··on Tom Wolfe Has Died
'A Man in Full' and 'I am Charolette Simmons' are two of my favorites. I picked up 'Kingdom of Speech' last year, but couldn't get into it. The other two though will keep you up at night. Great writing.
cyanbane··on AT&T updates firmware to block access to 1.1.1.1
Do they block quad9? Although I trust AT&T about as far as I can throw them, this may just be a bad config/update.
cyanbane··on Ask HN: What has HN given you?
absolutely nothing directly.

but

* besides pretty much the first five pages I hit every morning.

* a positive feeling towards the future because even though I may not understand every link on here, there are people that do. People that devote all of their time toward one thing small or big and that is a cool feeling knowing that people can make a living and follow their passion. If that's a startup that their only goal is to cash out and drive fast cars or their goal is to eat ramen every night and contribute to those less fortunate people. ALL OVER THE WORLD.

* a place to keep up with all the new things in my domain. Stuff I would never hear about on other sites.

* a broader sense of news. I know a lot of people don't like that not "hacker" articles get posted here, but I personally love it. I can't stand hitting much of the current news sites anymore and I enjoy seeing stuff pop up on here occasionally.

cyanbane··on SENS Research Foundation Receives $2.4M Ethereum Donation from Vitalik Buterin
while I don't disagree with the outcome you stated, that doesn't mean his motive isn't legitimate generosity. I am very happy that this organization can do (as of now) $2.4m more research to benefit people.
cyanbane··on iPhone X
Isn't this what the Kinect does to determine who you are and sign you on for the Xbox? I think that's been around for 4-5 years. Impressive they can do it all on the phone.
cyanbane··on Show HN: Gorillaz – Andromeda Music Video in WebGL
The world is spinning too fast

(this is awesome, great job)

cyanbane··on Car Cost per Year - New vs Used
Should note this seems to be for an F-150 (truck) and the data tied to it. In my experience, F-150s are very reliable although extrapolating that out to all "cars" may be a bit of a stretch and renders this graph really only useful for that model.
cyanbane··on Microsoft To-Do Preview

cyanbane··on Microsoft To-Do Preview
I would be very surprised if even Microsoft was not supporting the Windows Phone. I am sure it will pop up.
cyanbane··on Ask HN: Where do you host your personal blog these days?
Jekyll on Github.
cyanbane··on πfs – A data-free filesystem
I think it is fair to say my gene sequence is somewhere in there. It is also fair to say that my gene sequence is somewhere with alterations where my stomach processes Chipotle burritos with less.. fanfare. So it sounds like I need to come up with some kinda of a CAS9-ish process of finding this better burrito processing version of my gene sequence inside pi. The better version of my 'life of pi' for burritos.
cyanbane··on Update: CRISPR
Fantastic piece. This makes me wonder if we today are technically the "backup". The (potential) last non-CRISPR gene-driven generation that someone in the future may have to revert to.
cyanbane··on Show HN: Best of Themes – The simplest way to browse thousands of website themes
Love this, would be cool also to list if there are any external links within theme by default and where those go to, also any libraries used as a dependency. Great presentation of themes though, much better than just the 1 main screen shot.
cyanbane··on BART janitor grossed $270K in pay and benefits last year
Don't hate the player, hate the game. I hope Zhang gets to keep every penny and I hope SF comes up with a way better manage their expenditures.
cyanbane··on Stealth Cell Tower Disguised as Printer
In the same vein as Reddit's ELI5 (Explain Like I'm 5) For Us Laymen (FUL) on this topic, why can't Apple/Google currently default to a Full dropdown to 2G and give the option for by choice users to never allow dropdown to 2G (or 3G/4G) at the OS Level?

Is there a legal mandate (911 Surface Area increase), a hardware impasse (phones physically can't) or is it a company decision to not allow (for whatever reason)?

cyanbane··on Ask HN: Is it better to be good at many things or great at one thing?
There is going to be a comment on this that is really good from someone who has spent a lot of life thinking on this topic. You will also probably be able to aggregate a whole lot of opinions from people who may think about this every now and then. Which do you think will be more informative?
cyanbane··on HN comments are underrated
Reading this article and thinking back on the users on HN that I do enjoy reading comments from I think that a neat feature may be the ability for a logged in user to "favorite/mark" specific authors. Those authors only get some particular character in front of their name (or a different color) so that they stand out more. I do agree with this post about seeing certain names and knowing that the signal ratio will be higher is nice. May just need a better way to discern those when scanning a comments section.
cyanbane··on GitHub censored my research data
To be fair, maybe some automated method that hub/lab owners have not vetted the data overall. I hope your list stays up/public personally as long as you are willing to take responsibility for its upkeep. I wish there was some format to submit this list (and your responsibility for keeping up with it) to vendors on the lookout for this kinda stuff (up to them to decide inclusion).
cyanbane··on Twitter Shares Slump After Report Says Google Won’t Make a Bid
Disney paid $4B for Marvel which had an easy path to profit because of Disney's background. Disney paid $4B for Lucasfilm which had an easy path to profit because of Disney's background. As a shareholder I would be offended if they made an offer even half those prices for Twitter which has a product that isn't even in Disney's wheelhouse. I am confused why Disney is even in this conversation at this point.
cyanbane··on MailChimp’s founders built the company slowly by anticipating customers’ needs
I think it is different in the way that most big cities are when compared to other parts of their states. San Fran and East California might be one of the better examples. Marietta is very similar Merced; Athens is similar to Berkeley. I don't think Atlanta is very different in that regard. (From Athens, longtime Atlanta resident - spent a lot of time in Cali, lots of family out in Sacramento/Berkeley)
cyanbane··on Amazon flipped a default and made me thousands of dollars
I like the honesty. I look at it as that he has automated the most frequent stuff and that his allotment of time can go to further unique cases of customer service. Automated surface breadth allows deepness with finite time.
cyanbane··on You Don’t Have “Plenty of Time”
I understand the mentality and applaud it. That being said, you have got to have balance between drive of craft and living life. Great read though for sure.
cyanbane··on Experience Longhorn – A look at a defining Microsoft project
Could this be one of the most expensive software development failures of all time? Is MS putting money on top of that to show how much of a failure it was and how they decided to deal with it? At a minimum, just letting the story be told from the grave to allow for people to look out for similar things in other projects? Interesting I think. I don't know of many companies who allow/support documentation of a failure of this magnitude. MS continues to amaze me these days.
