cwoolfe··on EU's concealment of secret 'expert list' on CSAM regulation is maladministration
It is possible to detect CSAM in end-to-end encrypted messaging by doing it on-device on the client side before it is encrypted and/or on the receiving client side after it is decrypted. iMessage already does this in the latest release. Most smart phones have AI-enabled chips that would be able to run images/videos against classification algorithms. The tricky part would be enforcing that users use clients which do this, so the task becomes regulating allowed messaging clients, which might be impossible. That being said, one could probably knock out 80% of the problem by legally forcing the hand of all the major platforms to do client-side scanning. At that point, only the truly dedicated would move their comms to another platform. Mobile users are very susceptible to nudges.
cwoolfe··on Home schooling's rise from fringe to fastest-growing form of education
I agree that funding isn't necessarily the problem. We live in a wealthy county and have more to spend per pupil. Unfortunately that doesn't translate to higher test scores. The extra dollars go to administrative positions in the central office which may or may not translate to better academic performance.

so many scams and fake people on Craigslist made me move to Facebook marketplace. They have better algorithms for detecting real people.
cwoolfe··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
I sold it for $540 (without using ads). Same specs are selling on swappa.com for $620-$780. My eBay reputation is 100% and the MacBook was 100% clean. Perhaps I could have sold it for "more" using ads, but then all that money would just go to eBay, which I don't think is fair. They already take a final value fee anyway.
cwoolfe··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
Thanks for the swappa.com recommendation! I see that I could have made $100 more on my MacBook there than on eBay. Also it was WAY easier to find the exact specs. Thanks again!
cwoolfe··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
This strategy has been adopted by eBay as well and artificially drives up prices. Let me elaborate.

Recently, eBay has made it so that only the products with paid ads are shown in places where customers click. This drives up the cost of everything by more than 10% which is eBay's ad fee. I refused to buy a paid ad to sell my MacBook. It sat on the site for a month, which is highly unusual for an in-demand and rightly priced product. Finally I lowered the price enough to get it sold.

Most consumers use the default site, which filters by Recommended (i.e. ads) The play for consumers to win at this new payola ad scheme is to always filter by lowest price (or in amazon's case Prime + lowest price)

But really, consumers don't win (and neither do sellers) because now these ads take up space in supposed "search results" for items which don't match the search terms (but are close enough) This creates frustration when you are looking for something to meet a specification, like E26 light bulbs for example. Here, it is pointless to show anything that doesn't meet that specification and yet the site shows them, and the seller has to pay the ad fee.

Please somebody make a site with no payola!

cwoolfe··on The Quiet Revolution of the Sabbath
I love Sabbath rest and want others to enjoy it too. One very small thing we do is designate Sunday as a "no-delivery" day for our house, which you can configure here for your address: https://www.amazon.com/a/addresses?ref=ya_address_book_edit_...
cwoolfe··on I Tested an HDMI Adapter That Demands Your Location and Spams You with Ads
Given that the device is plugged in, trusted, shows up as a computer, and requires external power, it has all the connections it needs spy on the screen (at minimum) and remote control the victim iPhone without permission in the worst case. (it has video feed, and can emulate USB keyboard and mouse) Yikes!

On point #1: These large companies are publicly traded on the stock market and you are welcome to profit alongside them as they grow. I earned more from amazon stock than I've spent on amazon. I earned more from Tesla stock than it costs to buy a new Tesla.
cwoolfe··on Ask HN: How do you handle tech use with your kids?
I've thought a lot about this and am currently developing screenshot/AI-based monitoring for device usage for my kids under the age of 12. Aside from that, here's what our family does. We have three children under the age of seven. 1. Limit use to specific days, and specific time of day. This will keep them constantly asking you for it. 2. Choose high quality, age-appropriate shows like Daniel Tiger, Bluey. High quality creative games like Minecraft. I wrote some code to filter Rotten-Tomatoes "Fresh" movies by age-appropriateness via commonsense media. I'll host this on a website sometime soon. 3. Choose a DNS filter for your home router as a back-stop against accidental searches with inappropriate results. 4. Get to know the Screen Time options. It is possible to disable age-restricted content and disable Safari web browser. 5. I don't let them roam YouTube. It's mostly junk. 6. Probably goes without saying when considering young children, but still worth repeating the surgeon general's advice: Avoid social media until at least age 16. 7. Also worth mentioning that human trafficking of children does happen, even among young children, and predators use online spaces to find and groom children. So keep this in mind when you consider what you allow for your kids. 8. Also, sexting is a real thing that happens frequently and is frequently regretted or weaponized. Teach your kids to never ever take an inappropriate photo of their bodies.

Also would love to hear what everyone else is doing!

cwoolfe··on Apple joins opposition to encrypted message app scanning
Big tech already knows more about kids than parents do.(1) If they want to protect kids on their platforms we don't even need to talk about end-to-end encryption yet. What would help is big tech sharing daily summaries of child on-device activity with parents. There are lots of parental control apps that do this, and yet they have had to fight Apple for permission to operate.(2) Parents don't want their kids abused either. We can definitely find a win-win situation here if we work at it.

Yes they are put in jail. But who bears the cost of extra policing, court time, jail space? The city does. So the city is seeking reparation from the cost incurred.
cwoolfe··on Against longtermism (2021)
"Why do I think this ideology is so dangerous? The short answer is that elevating the fulfilment of humanity’s supposed potential above all else could nontrivially increase the probability that actual people – those alive today and in the near future – suffer extreme harms, even death. Consider that, as I noted elsewhere, the longtermist ideology inclines its adherents to take an insouciant attitude towards climate change. Why? Because even if climate change causes island nations to disappear, triggers mass migrations and kills millions of people, it probably isn’t going to compromise our longterm potential over the coming trillions of years."
cwoolfe··on Launch HN: Clearspace (YC W23) – Cut back on screen time
"Some of this only recently became technically possible. The new ScreenTime API from Apple allows users to connect apps on their phone to third party apps (like us). We receive opaque "tokens" for each user app selection and we can perform actions on the tokens, which affects the apps without us knowing what the actual apps are. We can add and remove "shields" to a token, which presents an obstructing interface over an app or website. We can display a user's usage of a token over a time period and display that data to them."

yeah good point. his account shouldn't be suspended as a buyer; it'd be the seller at fault. Really, it would be eBay's fault for letting a seller list a disallowed item.

cwoolfe··on Saying goodbye to Stack Overflow
I had a lot of angst against stackoverflow for years. Eventually I had to come to terms with the fact that while I hated how I was treated there, they did somehow manage to create an incredibly powerful tool that helped me in my career. I had to come to terms with the fact the policies I hated somehow also helped make top-quality answers instantly accessible.
cwoolfe··on Ask HN: How do you deal with information and internet addiction?
I can relate. I deleted YouTube off my phone. When I'm at my best, I plan out my ideal week in 1 hour blocks. Then I try and stick to it--staying busy with things my best-self already decided would be worthwhile endeavors.
