cvwright··on Claude says “You're absolutely right!” about everything
This illustrates the dangers of training on Reddit.
cvwright··on H-1B Visa Changes Approved by White House
Americans can do software development as well
cvwright··on Exile Economics: If Globalisation Fails
Are you trying to imply something racist? Just come out and say it.
cvwright··on M5 MacBook Pro No Longer Coming in 2025
I think Apple has historically used the college student market to clear out their remaining stock of last year’s MacBooks. Otherwise why release the new models just after classes have started?
cvwright··on Food, housing, & health care costs are a source of major stress for many people
The costs also used to be a lot lower - at least for most people who just pay the premium and don’t need much care. Now it’s not uncommon for a family’s health insurance to cost more than their housing.

The people who are mad are those who are paying more and not experiencing the benefits.

cvwright··on Tour de France confronts a new threat: Are cyclists using tiny motors?
Sure it was great to see Wout win again - in Paris no less! And it does kind of validate the TVL strategy of “wear Pogi out with 3 super hard weeks of racing.”

Unfortunately for them it just wasn’t enough to make the difference in the GC.

cvwright··on Tour de France confronts a new threat: Are cyclists using tiny motors?
But like Jorgenson said this year, there’s no tactics that can beat Pogi going up a steep hill at 7w/kg. At some point it all comes down to power to weight.
cvwright··on UK backing down on Apple encryption backdoor after pressure from US
Funny how nobody in this thread has mentioned which party is running the UK right now…
cvwright··on MonsterUI: Python library for building front end UIs quickly in FastHTML apps
It kinda looks like SwiftUI
cvwright··on AI makes the humanities more important, but also weirder
No but people do pay universities for (among other things) a meaningful credential that testifies to their knowledge and abilities.

If taking away phones is what’s required to make that credential meaningful again, then the universities must do it.

I think of it like a personal trainer. Do you pay them to make you sweaty and sore? Not really, but sweat and soreness are consequences of doing what it takes to build muscle/endurance/etc.

cvwright··on There Is No Diffie-Hellman but Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman
There are no proofs of the hardness of DDH or RSA etc. That’s why they’re called assumptions.

OTOH if you want to win a Turing Award…

cvwright··on Social media platforms: what's wrong, and what's next
Having tried (and failed) to build a more privacy friendly social network, I can confidently tell you that the big players in this space do the shady things they do solely because users reward them for doing so.

Trying to grow a new product is super hard. Trying to move into an established market is even harder. Trying to do that while also foregoing all the dark patterns is … well I won’t say it’s impossible but ugh it would take a huge head start in terms of name recognition, funding, or something else truly extraordinary.

cvwright··on Why does the U.S. always run a trade deficit?
Problem is that the USD factories don’t provide enough jobs for the US population
cvwright··on “There are people who can see and others who cannot even look”
The pinkie and ring finger share a tendon - this is why they are weaker than the other fingers.

Or, at least that’s how it was explained to me as a kid learning to play the double bass. The standard technique is to use those two fingers together to press the string on the upper part of the fingerboard where the most strength is required.

cvwright··on NSF faces shake-up as officials abolish its 37 divisions
Nitpick: Only one candidate was chosen by voters in the primary.

The other was selected by party leaders after the primary was over.

cvwright··on Sycophancy in GPT-4o
Likely they need the engagement numbers to show to investors.

Though it’s hard to imagine how huge their next round would have to be, given what they’ve raised already.

cvwright··on Migrating away from Rust
There are a ton of Swift /SwiftUI tutorials out there for every new technology.

The problem is, they’re all blogspam rehashes of the same few WWDC talks. So they all have the same blindspots and limitations, usually very surface level.

cvwright··on Here's how to get ChatGPT to stop being an overly flattering yes man
Interesting. Until this update, I would have said Claude was the worst yes man of the bunch.
cvwright··on Swift Container Plugin
And Swift compiler crashes aren’t even rare. You get used to it and learn how to track down the code that caused it.

I think I’ve seen a C compiler crash once or maybe twice, ever.

cvwright··on As 'Bot' Students Continue to Flood In, Community Colleges Struggle to Respond
This kind of fraud existed even before online college became so popular.

Around 2014-2015 we had to start reporting the “last day of attendance” or participation for any student who failed a course. Kind of a pain when you prefer to treat your university students as adults and not take attendance.

cvwright··on Matrix.org Will Migrate to MAS
But you already trust your client with all the private keys and message plaintexts for your account.

I struggle to see why I should trust it with those things but not the account password.

cvwright··on A Post Mortem on the Gino Case
There’s a lot that sucks about publishing in security and privacy. But wow this article makes me super grateful that we are still allowed to write attack papers and critique famous works.
cvwright··on Finland applies the “Housing First” concept (2020)
Often the regulations are the start of the problem.

I remember reading an article in Portland that the city was expecting N new people to move there in the next 10 years. So they approved construction of housing for N-200k people.

They intentionally set things up to push the poorest and most vulnerable 200k people into homelessness.

cvwright··on The Demoralization is just Beginning
> How have Sweden, Japan, France, etc. managed to keep income inequality around postwar lows while America hasn't?

They didn’t import millions of poor people to do all the dirty or unpleasant jobs in their countries.

cvwright··on TSMC expected to announce $100B investment in U.S.
Agreed that stability is super important.

So much so in fact that you’d think more rich countries would help pay to maintain it.

But yet here we are…

cvwright··on Jeff Bezos exerts more control of Washington Post opinion
Yes - the strategy is to get the people who care about doing what’s right to fight amongst themselves.

Then the people who care only about money and power can divide and conquer.

cvwright··on Everyone at NSF overseeing the Platforms for Wireless Experimentation is gone
Calling for civil war is the least ethical or responsible thing you can do. You’re willing to get yourself and all your friends (and most of us here) killed over a few MM of federal funding?

Shame on you.

cvwright··on Paxlovid: You'd have expected more
Yeah you can read very similar anecdotes from people who took ivermectin. This is why controlled experiments are so important.
cvwright··on Matrix Foundation to shut down bridges if it doesn't raise $100K
It’s a super hard problem.

So much so that it’s looking like maybe federation is not the best model. Your server ends up hosting any room and potentially any media that any of your users gets into. So naturally server admins must take an interest us in what their users are doing. This is in conflict with the top level goals of freedom and privacy.

Maybe the simpler client-server model of the web is better after all. Then if some user on my server is also into some super weird stuff, I don’t have to know. Because they connect to the weird server directly from their client, not through me.

cvwright··on Matrix Foundation to shut down bridges if it doesn't raise $100K
Don’t log out!

If you are ever at a point where you have no active sessions (aka “devices”) then other clients will not be able to send you the keys to decrypt their messages.

This is one of the many ways to get “unable to decrypt” errors in Matrix.
