We use a Unity3D / RubyOnRails stack and develop our own native plugins directly in iOS/Android. We also use many AWS services (S3, Route53, Cloudfront, EC2..) and bare-metal servers (OVH/Hetzner).

We're looking for a senior engineer to grow our development team. Unity3D knowledge is required. Many years of experience are _not_ required - the most important thing is a well rounded engineer (data structures, algorithms, etc).

Other requirements: High motivation to learn and grow, know what it is to work in a serious (-ly fun) startup (high pace, pressure, attention to detail..). Our mission is to change the way small kids learn languages, this should drive you too.

I never quite understood why everybody thinks storage should be in the local server and cannot be provided by a private company.

IMHO, storage is a commodity.

Would you argue that schools need their own power generators because otherwise they'll be submitted to private companies? Should schools also have their own satellites and internet connections?

If the data is sensitive why not just encrypting it when is stored the same way we do when we need to transmit something over the wire?

Now, from the school POV I think if they go for a private solution they should demand open standards (avoid being locked in) and appropriate SLAs.

Maybe I'm just a bit too cynical (negative?), but I find it rather sad that, lets say to improve a movie recommendation algorithm we have a $1M bounty (Netflix price), while to improve an algorithm to detect the possible destruction of earth we have a bounty of $35K.

There is another really nice paper from 2000 by Lutz Prechelt called ”An empirical comparison of C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, Rexx, and Tcl” (http://page.mi.fu-berlin.de/prechelt/Biblio/jccpprt2_advance...)

This paper compared several properties of 80 implementations of a set of requirements. It compared properties such as run time, memory consumption, source text length, time expended developing the solution, comment density, reliability and program structure.

Overall, even though there are some obvious threats to validity, I find this work quite read-worthy.

I've always found pretty hard to compete just with the typical landing page - beautiful image, nice mission statement and a sign-up botton. how to out stand?

Personally, I've always found good the landing page of Dropbox with 120s video that explains exactly the core. Something almost impossible with a one-liner.

What I cannot really understand is why would you go there to make new releases of hardware when everyone is doing exactly the same bombastic releases. It becomes almost like a cook fight, and ultimately it dilutes your news.

I think what Apple (and also now Google, Facebook..) does by having their own event, it's a much better approach. Of course this is something you can only do with size.

I actually once read something like financial companies prefer to promote people with family, house etc instead of single guys because that's the way you lock them down. If they cannot afford to quit the job you basically own them and you can exploit however you want.

I think in a similar fashion to the writer but have a different approach. By learning to live with very little and be happy with the minimum, I'm not afraid of having to leave a place and give up a nice salary. Having the money is a nice plus and I can enjoy buying stuff and nice restaurants, but I don't make it part of who I am or the foundation of my happiness. Or at least I try ;)
