cutie··on Column.py: A better Unix Column
Nice work. Please add a setup.py and register/upload to PyPI.
cutie··on Professional Software Development
Will digest this tomorrow, thanks.
cutie··on Professional Software Development
Are you drunk? You think a data plot has an intimate relationship with music but not software? Sounds like someone is romanticising. ;)
cutie··on Salt stack, the simpler puppet
I have some windows admin work to do as well. However I prefer that ansible doesn't require daemons on every host, so I was a bit torn on which to use.

Searched around a bit and found pave. It has the things I need (admittedly straightforward) and is about as simple as it gets. Would be great if it could get some love, as I appreciate the no-nonsense design. https://bitbucket.org/mixmastamyk/pave

cutie··on Soylent hits its 1.0 formula, nears release
Astroturfer or troll?
cutie··on Snowden impersonated NSA officials, sources say
Congrats on the most obtuse post of the day... content-free.

So, you support the power of the state over the idea of the fourth amendment (warrant process)? Ok, stating that fact would be more effective than this "that's just sad" tripe.

cutie··on Map of America's Racial Segregation
After seeing Los Angeles and the map of the west in general, I believe the Latinos are significantly under-counted.

I had anticipated this to some extent in daily life but it was driven home a few years ago. I lived in a very "latino" neighborhood, unusual to see anyone else...

When election time came around, I got in line of perhaps 50-100 people at a very busy polling place. Bored, I looked down the line at each person. Gone were the folks I was used to seeing every day, in fact I was hard-pressed to find any. I counted one or two latinos in the whole line, and they were not from the migrant-worker class... i.e. poorer Mexican or Central American Indians.

It is probable a larger percentage of these folks will submit to the Census bureau than registering to vote, but how much? As a whole they are not well integrated.

cutie··on Font Rendering - Mac vs Ubuntu
This may not be true, as I've gotten more info above. Too late to change.
cutie··on Font Rendering - Mac vs Ubuntu
Also, as I alluded to in my previous comment, as resolutions increase in the future, the Mac OS approach is more correct in the long run. Though, it has come with the cost of fuzzy fonts and squinting for the last decade.
cutie··on When Buying Two Computers Is Cheaper Than Buying One
Network drives, icloud, dropbox, carbonite, rsync, vnc, github, bitbucket, imap, gmail, lots of easy to use options today.
cutie··on Font Rendering - Mac vs Ubuntu
This is well-known and by design.

Mac renders fonts optimized for "correctness", which can appear fuzzy at low resolution. Their new hi-res (~200dpi) screens solve the problem, you get correctness and legibility.

Windows and Linux tend to optimize for screen legibility at low resolution, resulting in increased sharpness. At hi-res, they'll likely not look as correct as the Mac rendering.

cutie··on Firefox 16 live: Here's What's New
Linux versioning now makes more sense--in that every new release is a minor release. Fits better with the historical use of such numbers.
cutie··on Introducing the Redesigned Bitbucket
Oh, well, that's very close to white. 96% white as a matter of fact, after checking in gimp. It needs to be at least a few percent to be noticeable as different by they eye.

Perhaps you should up the brightness on your monitor?

cutie··on Introducing the Redesigned Bitbucket
I tried it and it blew up, complaining about "bookmarks." Couldn't commit and/or push, never figured it out.
cutie··on Introducing the Redesigned Bitbucket
I like the new look in general, but one drawback is pretty clear. The readme is now narrow and can't expand. I like narrow columns in general, but now all of my <pre> text is much too wide and showing scrollbars. Lots of work ahead. :(

I also see there is no whitespace around my h3s and not much around h1s, and h2s. Looks quite cramped. Still nicer on the whole. I guess I can try to hack in some line breaks manually.

cutie··on Introducing the Redesigned Bitbucket
Do you mean that you wish they followed the fad of unreadable light grey on white text? No thanks. ;)
cutie··on Thanks For Reading: 15 Years of News For Nerds
You've apparently never run into the malicious pack of down-voters here. Say something they disagree with (even when they are wrong), use humor, or say thank you, and you will.

Your take on /. is also overly negative. I've enjoyed it for many years. The reason I'm here more lately is that I've grown tired of much of the topics there, (such as software licensing) which I have little interest in.

cutie··on 'Babylon 5' star Michael O'Hare dies at 60
A shame. I really liked him as Sinclair, and even though I grew to like Sheridan, I thought O'Hare had more gravitas.
cutie··on Use Zsh
The biggest draw of fish is the syntax highlighting at the command line. I still write scripts in bash though.
cutie··on NASA Rover Finds Old Streambed on Martian Surface
As a kid I would imagine aliens helping us pull Venus into the same orbit as Mars and combining them to form a new planet like ours.
cutie··on OStatus: like Twitter, but open
Better name needed.
cutie··on Fokus - new UI concept that emphasizes text-selection
This seems like it would be good for watching videos at night (if the wrapping div can be selected). Many are embedded on white pages and this would help a lot.
cutie··on Show HN: 5000 best movies
Good point, a 10+ year cooling off period would definitely help.
cutie··on Show HN: 5000 best movies
Yeah, avengers and dark night better than fight club? C'mon.
cutie··on Abusing Emoji in iOS and Your Mac
These are unicode codepoints and handled just fine everywhere but on Apple gear, and (I think IE6/XP). If you've never seen them it means you are on Apple or never bothered to install the fonts.
cutie··on A Return to Linux on the Workstation
The beta version, no?
cutie··on Abusing Emoji in iOS and Your Mac
It's a shame on OSX/iOS. When I've used these characters and viewed on Safari it turns them into raster icons ... exactly what I don't want. Windows and Linux are fine.

Anyone know how to disable this "feature?"

cutie··on California launches online voter registration
About f'ing time... it's 2012. This year is also the first year you could file online CA tax returns without a middleman (or at least the first I noticed). When is the IRS gonna get off its butt?
cutie··on Slashdot and SourceForge sold to Dice Holdings
The key to /. is the same as it has always been. Set your threshold to 3 or so and it becomes a delightful site.

I set that up in 2002 or so and still visit weekly for fun.

cutie··on Ask HN: Why PEP8 favors using spaces over tabs for code indentation?
Yes, there's an error there, conflating two ideas. I think tabs-only can still cause a problem, say when lining up comments on the end of a line because there might be a different amount needed per line depending on its length. Still, you can't be sure what other people will have, so for interop spaces it is.

It might not be the case for everyone, but my laptop screen is 1920x1080 and has more room for text than I can use. In a three way merge your strategy could help me perhaps.
