cutie··on Russ Olsen: The Best Programming Advice I Ever Got
Network effects and name recognition can work against it for a time.

I'm thinking currently about the demise of Kodak, and similar situations where where a dominant player is displaced by new technology. Had Kodak pursued digital early and aggressively things would be different now. I bet politics didn't allow that outcome.

cutie··on Ask HN: Why PEP8 favors using spaces over tabs for code indentation?
The reason is that when sharing code use of tabs can lead to confusion, subtle, and not so subtle errors, especially in Python, where consistent indentation is most important.

For example, one person has tabs set to the size of 8 chars and writes a lengthy script. A second person comes along with tabs set to 5 chars and makes changes. The indentation could well be wrong because they see the same file differently. Sometimes you get lucky and you get errors immediately, but other bugs can lurk... like the second statement under an if block for example. Should it be included in the if or not? Bug.

Therefore, tabs aren't worth the trouble they can potentially cause. Never mix them with spaces either.

Also, using spaces is not difficult in a modern editor. You don't have to actually type four spaces each level. You set tabs as 4 spaces in the prefs and then every time you hit the tab key you get 4 spaces instead, and when you hit the backspace it removes 4 spaces (geany does this).

Whatever you use, I suggest turning on the display of whitespace in your editor. It will then show tabs as "--->" and spaces as a dot. Change the color in the highlighting preferences to be very subtle so it does not overwhelm the code. It will help you keep every file you work on consistent and such errors a thing of the past.

I've thought about this, your example and also moon or mars bases. While theoretically possible, the thought of trying to do major underground construction (with limited resources) in a space suit seems wildly impractical.

It's a shame the other terrestrial planets are so uninhabitable.
cutie··on GNOME Workstation OS
Everything you've said is true, but it's a relatively small industry, very custom (where linux shines), and little overlap with others.
cutie··on Decrypt.py: Act like a decrypting hacker on tv
Thanks, I did look for this scene but couldn't find it. "Whole movie" indeed. So... why did some clown downvote my comment?
cutie··on Ask HN: Where is the Hostility on HN Coming From?
> "rubbish; passive-aggressive dump"

Many here were jealous someone had the nerve to redesign their precious wikipedia and lashed out at the poor sap who dared stuck his neck out.

It may not have been perfect, but what project of that size could be? A few things on the page looked like an upgrade to me. The appropriate reaction should have been, "interesting, meh," rather than ugly comments.

cutie··on Huffshell: You probably type too much.
True. I remember someone here complaining about that just the other day, said it was a bad idea, but I can't remember why. I prefer the shell doing it.
cutie··on Decrypt.py: Act like a decrypting hacker on tv
"It's a cylon virus... I'm decrypting the firewalls and downloading to the server."
cutie··on Decrypt.py: Act like a decrypting hacker on tv
I seem to remember something similar in Wargames from the 80's.
cutie··on Huffshell: You probably type too much.
Yep, NIH.

DOS was primitive but the things you mentioned worked, even if they were a simulation. The end user was unaware, unless they needed real OS capabilites. In which case, why were they using DOS?

Cmd has a lot of improvements most people are not aware of because they were off by default. Still they refused to do further improvement necessary to make it very useful. There is a 3rd party shell called 4NT that is/was a compatible and very powerful replacement.

The promise of the web was the democratization of publishing... anyone could do it, cutting out the middle-men. Now you tell us a "professional" has to be involved, no thanks.

As long as its readable I'm happy. I look at a lot of these professionally designed sites in the way you do this one, too much. I'd prefer the traditional black Times on a grey background.

cutie··on Huffshell: You probably type too much.
DOS supported those you mention, and cmd.exe finally has them on by default in recent winders. It is still primitive though in everything else, e.g. scripting. Powershell with its weird syntax is a big improvment, but we split up after XP.

Scientists were making web pages when you was in diapers, kid. I was there, working at Rockwell in '94.
cutie··on In China, the rich and powerful can hire body doubles to do their prison time
People are not generally angry at "the rich," but rather the fat leaches on the govt and financial sectors. I've not heard anyone complaining about the self-made man.
cutie··on The Differences Between Germany and the United States
I'm sarcastic in general, and when receiving accusations respond. Of course we could always improve our writing in general. If you don't like your argument critiqued, perhaps you shouldn't do it either?

America is a baby compared to Europe, and modern communication works against localization of language.
cutie··on The Differences Between Germany and the United States
The trend is cleary described in the link above. The first sentence, "The 1990 United States Census and 2000 United States Census found that non-Hispanic whites were becoming a minority in Los Angeles."

> immigrants likely respond..

Exactly, they are quite underrepresented in the data above, reinforcing the argument. They are in higher concentration the farther south you go.

If you are upset with the word gringo or "fewer..", it was a small attempt at adding levity, perhaps it is a bit flippant.

Your assumptions of my mental state, however, are known psychologically as projection.

Don't confuse statement of fact with racism, a common misconception. I've traveled over the world and liked everyone.

cutie··on Throne of JS: Eight JavaScript MV* Libraries Compared
I like it and prefer the coding style to jquery. Unfortunately dojo (and everything else) has been overshadowed by it.

cutie··on The new Digg
If you need code to display a text document, you're doing it wrong.

There is a philosophy (with some merit) of worse is better. So, let's be honest... you're promoting sloppy coupling in order to save developer time. The problem is that the technical debt will have to be paid back in the future.

cutie··on OAuth2.a or Let's Just Fix It
I'd like to like Oauth but its rise has made some use-cases very difficult or impossible. We write automated scripting (to display data feeds) where no human is involved, and oauth has cut off access of many of the big sites. Twitter is one of the few that leaves us a backdoor, but who knows how long it will last.

We are working around oauth, but the user experience for someone trying to use our scripts is horrible, a multistep process that requires a technical person (too much for some of our customers).
