curmudgeon22··on Nanoplastic Ingestion Causes Neurological Deficits
mine quickly chipped as well... also stack without lids FWIW.
curmudgeon22··on Fuck being productive
Fair point. I have no data, but assume that's a minority of immigrants.

Also, there are some requirements to support those family members:

"You will also sign a Sponsorship Agreement, obligating you to financially support your sponsored relatives if they cant provide for their own needs. The new permanent resident will not qualify for government assistance, even after the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident, separates from you, or leaves the country."

"To sponsor a parent or grandparent, you must obligate yourself for 20 years of financial support."

curmudgeon22··on Fuck being productive
Immigration is actually an interesting one. There is a large amount of immigration for sure, but my understanding is that our economy will be in huge trouble without it.

We don't have sufficient birth rates to maintain things and so both economic productivity but also the tax base will be significantly harmed without this immigration.

That's not to disagree with your comment, the large amounts of immigration do cause problems and as you say, much of it flows into certain cities.

curmudgeon22··on FDA Approves First Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Vaccine
> In this study, approximately 12,500 participants have received Arexvy and 12,500 participants have received a placebo. Among the participants who have received Arexvy and the participants who have received a placebo, the vaccine significantly reduced the risk of developing RSV-associated LRTD by 82.6% and reduced the risk of developing severe RSV-associated LRTD by 94.1%.
curmudgeon22··on Show HN: Instant stress reduction app for non-meditators with immersive sound
Hi, thanks for the app! I've been using it for a few days now (a couple dips and dives) and enjoy it.

I do often find it immersive and sometimes notice myself generating mental imagery to match the sounds.

My one complaint is that after every session, it asks for notification permissions. For me, no, i don't want to give your stress reduction app the ability to pester me :) I have no problem that the app asks for this, but I don't think it should do so after every session.

curmudgeon22··on Two U.S. men charged in 2022 hacking of DEA portal
>The government alleges the defendants and other members of ViLE use various methods to obtain victims’ personal information, including:

-tricking customer service employees;

-submitting fraudulent legal process to social media companies to elicit users’ registration information;

-co-opting and corrupting corporate insiders;

-searching public and private online databases;

-accessing a nonpublic United States government database without authorization

-unlawfully using official email accounts belonging to other countries.

>Prosecutors say they tied Singh to the government portal hack because he connected to it from an Internet address that he’d previously used to access a social media account registered in his name. When they raided Singh’s residence on Sept. 8, 2022 and seized his devices, investigators with Homeland Security found a cellular phone and laptop that allegedly “contained extensive evidence of access to the Portal.”

>The complaint alleges that between February 2022 and May 2022, Ceraolo used an official email account belonging to a Bangladeshi police official to pose as a police officer in communication with U.S.-based social media platforms.

curmudgeon22··on Dan Wang: China’s Hidden Tech Revolution

curmudgeon22··on Revolutionary Stroke Treatment Will Save Millions of Lives
Sounds pretty helpful:

> The trial was so successful that it was halted early — given the findings, it was no longer ethical to keep adding patients to the control group. While 29 percent of patients in the control group (who were treated, when eligible, with alteplase, a type of tPA, alone) survived with at least a partial recovery of their deficits and were able to reclaim their independence, 53 percent of patients who received EVT saw the same positive outcomes. And while 19 percent of the control patients died, just 10.4 percent of the EVT patients did. Given that medical progress is often seen in decimal-point increments, these were staggering numbers.

curmudgeon22··on A day in the life of almost every vending machine
We had hot corn soup/drink from a couple vending machines in Hokkaido in the winter. I thought it worked well on a cold day, who knows, maybe it was the novelty!
curmudgeon22··on Choking Off China’s Access to the Future of AI
I think it depends a lot on timeline and other factors, like China's ability to get key tech/knowledge from other countries.

If they had to do everything themselves, I think it'd set them back longer than a decade.

curmudgeon22··on Discriminatory attitudes against the unvaccinated during a global pandemic
I can't comment to staff, but I've never seen a retirement home or similar that required any kind of vaccination for visitors. Not to say they don't exist, but certainly they weren't part of a normal lived experience here.
curmudgeon22··on Discriminatory attitudes against the unvaccinated during a global pandemic
I'm in Canada, near Vancouver. It's mostly back to normal now, but for a long time:

* couldn't visit restaurants

* couldn't fly/take a train/take a ferry

Still can't:

* Visit my grandparents at their retirement home

* Visit the USA

The general opinion as that you should be vaccinated, but it mostly doesn't come up now. The government is currently passing legislation so they can better mandate vaccination to medical professionals as well as suppress dissenting opinions by those professionals.

Based on the words and actions of the federal government, i've definitely felt like a second class citizen.

curmudgeon22··on Apple introduces end-to-end encryption for backups
It seems like they are willing to fight such requests: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FBI%E2%80%93Apple_encryption_d...
curmudgeon22··on Vancouver Special
This matches what i see in the past 5 years or so as well.
curmudgeon22··on The Age of Progress Is Becoming the Age of Regress – and It’s Traumatizing Us
This is the report the article is based on "Stress in America 2022", worth a read:

curmudgeon22··on I strive to be a 0.1x Engineer (2016)
That's not the definition from the article. They talk about knowing when to say no to a project, the concept of identifying value and trying to do valuable things.
curmudgeon22··on Why It Was Easier to Be Skinny in the 1980s
The articles guesses as to contributing factors:

> People are exposed to more chemicals that might be weight-gain inducing. Pesticides, flame retardants, and the substances in food packaging might all be altering our hormonal processes and tweaking the way our bodies put on and maintain weight.

> The use of prescription drugs has risen dramatically since the 1970s and ’80s. Prozac, the first blockbuster SSRI, came out in 1988. Antidepressants are now one of the most commonly prescribed drugs in the U.S., and many of them have been linked to weight gain.

> Study authors think that the microbiomes of Americans might have somehow changed between the 1980s and now.

curmudgeon22··on Sugar Substitutes Surprise
I recently read some interesting info on xylitol and benefits for dental health: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4232036/
curmudgeon22··on More than a third of US small businesses couldn’t pay all their rent in October
My (relatively uninformed) understanding is that they are only able to charge these markups because of a similarly "all time" lack of inventory, leading to scarcity of vehicles to sell. The increase in transaction value isn't making up for the decrease in transaction volume.
curmudgeon22··on How food powers the body's metabolism
Very interesting and thanks for the post. Any recommendations on good places for further reading on the subject?
curmudgeon22··on The Gentleperson's Guide To Forum Spies (2012)
Vouching does rely on someone to take the extra effort relative to a downvote, so I think it's safe to assume vouching is more rare.
curmudgeon22··on Uber hacked, internal systems breached and vulnerability reports stolen
> ... who said they breached Uber after performing a social engineering attack on an employee and stealing their password.

> As the Uber account was protected with multi-factor authentication, the attacker allegedly used an MFA Fatigue attack and pretended to be Uber IT support to convince the employee to accept the MFA request.

> ... the hacker says they found a PowerShell script containing admin credentials for the company's Thycotic privileged access management (PAM) platform, which was used to access the login secrets for the company's other internal services.

> BleepingComputer was also told by a source that the attacker downloaded all vulnerability reports before they lost access to Uber's bug bounty program. This likely includes vulnerability reports that have not been fixed, presenting a severe security risk to Uber.

curmudgeon22··on Rights, Laws, and Google
Part of the problem IS google and their refusal to reinstate accounts once police cleared the accused:

> Mark asked if Mr. Hillard could tell Google that he was innocent so he could get his account back. “You have to talk to Google,” Mr. Hillard said, according to Mark. “There’s nothing I can do.” Mark appealed his case to Google again, providing the police report, but to no avail…

> A Google spokeswoman said the company stands by its decisions, even though law enforcement cleared the two men

curmudgeon22··on Launch HN: Be Golden (YC S22) – Measure and manage your inflammation levels
Neat, TIL.
curmudgeon22··on Launch HN: Be Golden (YC S22) – Measure and manage your inflammation levels
Really interesting chart on your lifestyle interventions link. Curcumin has both a very strong performance and pretty good range. Interesting to see that it is much more so than exercise or sleep improvements.
curmudgeon22··on Electric vehicles are way more energy-efficient than internal combustion
I wonder how much the footprint for ICE changes based on where the crude was sourced from, eg:

- traditional well in the US

- fracking in the US

- offshore

- Canadian tarsands

Edit: This article has some interesting information on Energy Return on Investment (EROI)

curmudgeon22··on White House privately demanded Twitter ban me months before the company did so
As mentioned in the article, he was banned, filed a lawsuit, and has since been re-instated after admission that the ban was not justified. So I don't think the argument that Twitter wasn't enforcing its rules has merit.
curmudgeon22··on A Dangerous Place to Be Pregnant Is Getting Even Scarier
Some ominous info lower down in the article:

> For every 100,000 women who give birth in Germany, fewer than 4 die. In Canada, the figure is 8; in the UK, a bit fewer than 9. In the US, the number is 24.

> According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the maternal mortality rate in cities is about 18 deaths per 100,000 births. In rural counties, that figure is 29, roughly on par with Syria.

curmudgeon22··on Electric car battery replacement costs more than car
> Her parents spent $11,000 on a used electric car for her. It's a Ford Focus Electric. The car is a 2014 model, with 60,000 miles.

> "In March, it started giving an alert," she said. "And then we took it to the shop and it stopped running."

> "The Ford dealership had advised us that we could replace the battery," he said. "It would only cost $14,000."

$3,000 more than what the family bought the car for. And that quote didn't include installation and labor costs, Ray Siwinski said.

curmudgeon22··on Hertz faces lawsuit from 47 customers claiming false arrests
That's pretty ridiculous. I wonder if this happens to any extent with other rental companies. Googling didn't turn up anything but the Hertz stories and the articles I skimmed didn't mention it.
