cung··on Staring into the abyss as a core life skill
I keep hearing that consulting and finance are terrible uninspiring careers, but as a consultant I honestly have no idea what else I could do that would be more inspiring. I would love to know though.
cung··on Glutamate buildup may be key factor in mental exhaustion
So what are the ways to lower glumate buildup?
cung··on My take on how DuckDuckGo can outperform Google
DDG doesn’t track you, but does it really matter if all the results have tracking cookies?

I don’t see a difference in the level of ad targeting I’m getting, even though I changed from Google to DDG.

cung··on How to Start a Riot with Information Weapons
Do we have videos on how west is deploying similar tactics? Purely for educational reasons it would be interesting to see what we are doing in foreign countries. I feel it us disingenuous to only focus on how Russia is doing.
cung··on Ask HN: Where have all the forums gone?
Thank you for bringing this up. I’m amazed that this is not being discussed more. Search engines just stopped showing forum results. I would argue this is one of the main reasons people feel that forums have disappeared.

I also agree with your theory about censorship being the likely cause. Control over internet content has silently moved to a few companies.

cung··on The gut metabolite indole-3 propionate promotes nerve regeneration and repair
Am I misunderstanding your comment? Olive oil and coconut oil have terrible omega-6/omega-3 ratio, where as canola is pretty good.

cung··on For Pete's Sake, Don't Touch HTML Inputs
Had to make a form with over 3000 input fields for a project. Figured that input fields shouldn’t be so resource intensive as to become a problem. Except that the form manager used JS inputs leading to the browser crashing constantly.
cung··on Canola oil linked to worsened memory and learning ability in Alzheimer's in mice
Great issues raised. Searching for canola and brain on scholar gives research on high fat diets with similarish findings https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S00319...
cung··on Robert Sapolsky on Depression (2009)
The chemicalization, medicalization and commercialization of depression is a dead end. While the chemical imbalances might be real, the symptoms are due to actual situations in your life. Treating the symptoms with drugs is a pretend solution that only works because it is often the first step people take to actually better their life.
cung··on Poll: Best search engine for controversial topics?
There’s also searX and metager, just to name a few non-corporate owned search engines.
cung··on The brain isn’t supposed to change this much
> “Scientists are meant to know what’s going on, but in this particular case, we are deeply confused.”

Add to that the subheading. The combination made me back out straight away in protest.

cung··on Researchers in Japan use soybean compound to make catfish 100% female
Yes, at least based on academic articles I researched before turning vegan to make sure I wasn’t harming myself.
cung··on Researchers in Japan use soybean compound to make catfish 100% female
Is the goal of this article to promote the false belief that eating soy products will turn you female?
cung··on Show HN: BornAtXCO2 – What CO2 PPM were you born at, how much has it increased
I would argue 500 million years ago is not ”not so long ago”. The Cambrian period also didn’t have more than a microbial soil crust living outside of oceans.
cung··on Show HN: BornAtXCO2 – What CO2 PPM were you born at, how much has it increased
Just so that this isn’t unclear to anyone, a quick search for historical CO2 shows how absurdly wrong this comment is.
cung··on I need to explain to you just how dire America's Pokémon card crisis is
Anybody else get the feeling that this is just pokemon marketing?

I think the biggest clue is that Youtubers who talk about brands only for money, such as Logan Paul, are suddenly head over heals about Pokemon™ trading cards.

cung··on Why Governments Fail
Like child-labor laws? Public education? Your comment has a point, but it is quite black and white.

Governments are a service that people buy, which we have collectively voted on, agreeing that there are things that a purely corporation driven society would not do.

cung··on Introduction to Machine Learning for Finance
They could, for example, be buying early stage startups cheap, sell it to a friend for 3x, who sells to a VC fund for 3x, which then sells it to the public by showing huge growth.

No inflows, old investors get paid with money from new retail investors and retail investors are left with a hot potato. A Ponzi scheme.

cung··on Daily Mail owner sues Google over search results
I feel like I am going crazy that this fact is not discussed at all.

I recall google from a decade ago being able to answer all my questions, where as now all I get is mediocre, politically-safe, canned answers with a ridiculous amount of ads.

It is enough to look at recipe websites to see that Daily Mail’s claim is clearly true. Recipe sites providing a user hostile ad-filled experience gain the top place, where as simple recipes without stories and tons of ads are nowhere to be found.

Why would Google do anything else? Website owners are paying Google to be ranked higher by essentially buying ads from Google. The difference between the ppc of a competitor and Google is the price the website owners pay. In return, Google will rank the website higher.

cung··on Introduction to Machine Learning for Finance
Is there any proof of Renaissance not being just insider trading or a Ponzi scheme?
cung··on Yahoo Answers to shut down May 4, 2021
Why is person-to-person knowledge being replaced with company-to-person?

I recall in the 90’s and 00’s being able to google anything and find an answer on a forum or Yahoo Answers. Now all that is last and all google queries return spam sites with bad answers and tons of ads.

cung··on What Kind of Genius Makes a Traceable, Illicit Payment on Cash App?
This does not belong on the frontpage of hackernews.
cung··on Making $378k a year as a Fiverr freelance writer [video]
Her secret? She is lying.

In all honesty, This sounds like an ad for fiverr. Get rich with a 40 hour work week by doing something anybody can.

cung··on Python resources for everybody
Thank you for sharing this!
cung··on How to lower the price of plant-based meat
It doesn’t get much cheaper and healthier than beans and soy.

I’ve never felt this good before and the secret seems to be fiber in everything, even the protein.

cung··on Accounts with GAN Faces Attack Belgium over 5G Restrictions
Just saw ads for Huawei 5G on Twitter, which brings an interesting twist to this, as it is essentially Huawei paying Twitter to look the other way.
cung··on No, WallStreetBets isn’t robbing Wall Street to help the little guy
Could you elaborate?
cung··on Facebook Disabled My Account After I Criticized Them
Your account was probably hacked and used for something that broke the rules. I got an email warning of someone trying to change my password within a week of making an account.
cung··on Enter Sandbox: Google is building an internet without cookies
An interesting thing I've noted on disabling personalized advertisements: My SO, who has personalized ads on and lives in the same household, sees ads based on my behaviour. So the ads aren't personalized to me, but they certainly are to my SO.
cung··on A New Google
I’d argue this showcases the mysterious death of forums, where Reddit has become the only one standing, but even it not being featured in Google search results.

Google used to return tons of forums as results, where as now it is all subpar SEO written to show ads to google users, which is Google’s funding model. Forums and discussion sites require a search modifier.

When I search for something I want to find real people talking about it, but it is becoming increasingly difficult.
