culopatin··on What if remote working, not AI, is to blame for weak junior hiring?
I have the same experience. Getting hired with this background is weird. I don’t know how confident I should or shouldn’t be. And I wasn’t in consulting until recently. I like to put the focus on understanding the end to end workflows more than spending time worrying about my solution being the absolute best that would make HN drool over though
culopatin··on It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12
Didnt really need any. I’m still using my M1 Pro from when it was released. My mom using the oldest Air now.
culopatin··on It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12
Of the 6 MacBooks that have circled through my house since 2018 I’ve had to do repairs on 0 of them. 5 are still active
culopatin··on Ask HN: Is anyone working at least 4 hours daily on an Apple Vision Pro?
My room gets pretty bright in the afternoon and my screen sucks in that environment. I’ve been using the quest 3 and while I don’t think it’s perfect from a software point of view (like why do the windows snap at x distances? Why can’t I pick?) it’s pretty good. It lets me have a smallish display on my desk and when I need it, I have 3 displays in VR. Compared to the cost of the apple device, you can upgrade 3 times before you get to the cost of the apple vision.
culopatin··on It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12
By the time something breaks, you’re so far behind in tech that you’re not buying parts for it anymore. I used to be in the “must be able to fix/upgrade” and then realized in practice it never happens.
culopatin··on It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12
A few*. I have 4 at home and none smell
culopatin··on Please Use AI
AI is like cheap void calories. Writing by hand is calories from a good home cooked meal with all the nutrients and love, AI code (unless maybe you worked on putting together an AI system and the harness is your build), feels like calories from a Sprite.

Also I’ve been thinking that ai code is like cheap amazon furniture and hand crafted is well… hand crafted.

culopatin··on Five frontier LLMs disagree on 67% of 1k real-world fact-check claims
I’m no expert but if LLMs are token prediction machines, and you tell it to not build an explanation before the answer, isn’t it less likely that the token prediction for the final answer will have less raw material before it to build a grounded response?

In other words: no explanation > no foundation for prediction of the answer tokens?

culopatin··on My new obsession: A horse-racing board game of pure luck
Reminds me of an arcade mechanical game where you tossed balls into a panel with holes and depending on where it landed it would push your designated horse faster. It was a massive thing with room for an announcer in the middle like 20 seats at least around him in a horseshoe shape.
culopatin··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
Ok? What does that have to do with what I was talking about?
culopatin··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
This is a completely different discussion. One can be responsible, if you’re not, there are consequences. It’s not just this. Zone out a bit driving and go too fast? Ticket. Left weed in your jacket by accident and went to the airport to fly internationally? Well… Everything has consequences, all I’m trying to say is that people know what those are and we shouldn’t be “aw but what if they don’t read the rules?” Uncertainty is clear from the start.
culopatin··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
Use a condom. If you’re smart enough to figure out a temporary visa, you’re smart enough to understand conception.
culopatin··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
Look, I’m an immigrant. You know the risks you take when you come to the US on a non immigrant visa. We all choose to play the game and nothing is guaranteed. I would’ve considered reckless to have a kid in the US knowing that my status is not stable without having an alternative plan. We need to face the facts and stop acting like we immigrants were victims of some bait and switch and must be protected from any fallout of this process. The rules of the game are transparent.
culopatin··on Vivaldi 8.0
Does it have a torrent client like Opera did? I really miss that browser
culopatin··on Two computers, one monitor, zero fiddling (2025)
Honestly the best thing that worked for me, even if the hardware is not for everyone, is a Logitech MX Keys that supports 3 devices paired with another Logitech mouse that supports 3 devices, then flip the monitor through the inputs, super reliable. I could even have 2 devices side by side on the same screen (Dell utlrawide) and toggle between them.
culopatin··on Two computers, one monitor, zero fiddling (2025)
There is a myriad of apps that handle all the DDC commands for you, it’s a non issue unless you want to write something custom.
culopatin··on Two computers, one monitor, zero fiddling (2025)
I had one of the versions of this monitor and I miss the PIP and two displays half and half, the KVM, it was truly nice.I never had to move any wires. I wish there was one just like it but 120hz and higher brightness that’s not $1.5k
culopatin··on [dead]
I wonder how much hotter the air is 500m from a highway with stop and go traffic with hundreds/thousands of catalytic converters between above 700F and engines at 200.
culopatin··on Fecal transplants for autism deliver success in clinical trials (2019)
“Universities” aren’t doing anything. Without the people that drive this they would just be admin people looking at each other and professors teaching to empty desks. Let’s not forget that often if a research was ran by X little group of people, once they move on, the people that come in have their own interests and it’s unlikely they’ll continue the project. How many unpublished papers sit because the student doing the research got a job, a life, doesn’t have time to continue and the PI can’t have some other student relearn the whole thing to finish it?

I understand the researchers lean on the infrastructure of the university, but I’m sure they paid their dues both in money payments to the university, depraved sleep and sweat. People need to eat, so I see nothing wrong with them putting their effort to work if that means the research continues and gets to the people, the university likely gets a cut as others mentioned.

culopatin··on Teaching Claude Why
In 1, 2 and 3, any progress stops because no one is making new means of production, so we must stop population from growing. No? Who’s building the factories or whatever those means of production are?
culopatin··on Higher usage limits for Claude and a compute deal with SpaceX
That’s because the week ends before you can use them because you’re waiting for your hourly resets. Now the week essentially got longer with the same limit
culopatin··on Urban Birds Are Rising Earlier Because of Traffic Noise (2013)
Im in a super dense area. Speed limit is really low. So tire noise is not that big of a factor and the WOOOOOOO of electric cars is prevalent over others. Obviously comparing apples to apples, a diesel truck is going to be super loud.
culopatin··on Urban Birds Are Rising Earlier Because of Traffic Noise (2013)
I find electric cars louder than the current engines most of the time. The space travel noises they put out while driving are louder than say a non hybrid Camry, not to mention ICE cars don’t make any backing up noises. Parallel parking of electric cars is so annoying. Hybrids too, I can hear the whining of a Prius coming down the street from half a block away.

This is not to say I’m against electric and hybrid cars, I’m all for them. But the fake noises they added are not a benefit.

culopatin··on DeepSeek V4 – almost on the frontier
100+ on average?! That hurt.
culopatin··on California to begin ticketing driverless cars that violate traffic laws
This is a false equivalence. Im not talking about blaming a victim. I don’t know who the victim is when someone stopped, looked started driving and out of nowhere a runner with noise cancelling headphones ran in front of them anyway. I’m talking about you want to be safe? Don’t just run into the street without looking. It’s the best optimization for the state of affairs in the streets. People are not perfect, pillars are very big now, blind spots are bigger, cellphones, whatever you want.
culopatin··on Denuvo has been cracked in all single-player games it previously protected
It’s hard to see from a US/Euro salary perspective, where not spending $60 is a moral decision, but you can start seeing how someone in a 300/mo salary country doesn’t think “I’ll save a bit and buy it” and instead thinks “I’ll never be able to afford this and this studio made millions anyway” and just pirate it. I’m not that articulate with my words but I hope you get what I’m trying to say.
culopatin··on California to begin ticketing driverless cars that violate traffic laws
But are pedestrians considerate and make a contract with the driver eye to eye to signal “hey, I see you, i see you see me, thanks for stopping, I will be crossing”.

Or they are looking at their phones standing on the wheelchair ramp or chatting with someone, kinda going in, maybe, maybe not, and when it looks like they’ll be crossing the street parallel to yours and you start going they change their minds and cross diagonally in front of you?

Because I’m all for pedestrian safety and prioritization. But SF has gone so “safe” that it’s back to unsafe. Runners will join an intersection from behind a tree in front of a car that had stopped and was starting to go without even looking up. People join a crossing looking down or away from the flow of traffic, it’s insane to me. I find that kids cross streets much better than adults here. A kid will stop, look, check if they were seen and then proceed.

My 4070 super and 5070 super both max out their tdp when I use them with ollama, is your usage different?
culopatin··on The Americans queueing up to renounce their citizenship
That title tells you that neither the person making that comment nor the one that gave them the time of day ever lived or know what it’s like to be in an actual dictatorship and it’s disrespectful to those who did. If this is a dictatorship then wow, North Korea must be great.
culopatin··on Waymo says can't avoid bike lanes because riders want to be dropped off in them
At times I dont know if I prefer a car blocking the lane than someone parked next to it and surprising me with a door that opens into the lane. For SF people: the bike lane next to the panhandle going west for example.
