cuddlyogre··on The loss of dark skies is so painful, astronomers coined a new term for it
Sensory pollution is just as bad as physical pollution, probably even worse. You can get people behind picking up litter and not burning tires.

But it's impossible to make them understand how miserable it is being exposed to a constant drone of noise or the light that comes in through your blackout curtains at night.

Usually you're told to get over it. Would you tell someone to get over coughing fits from someone blowing black smoke from their chimney?

cuddlyogre··on LibreWolf – Custom version of Firefox, focused on privacy, security and freedom
Paying apple hundreds of dollars to do something the owner of the phone should be able to do while waiting in line at the store is not an acceptable alterative.
cuddlyogre··on LibreWolf – Custom version of Firefox, focused on privacy, security and freedom
A replaceable battery is a better solution.
cuddlyogre··on Amsterdam to use “noise cameras” against too loud cars
Every law written can be abused. That doesn't mean we shouldn't have laws. And of all the differences people have, most people agree with the laws that protect people from intentional and indiscriminate harm.

People with loud exhausts are injuring people intentionally and indiscriminately.

Usually it's through a stress response that turns into PTSD if a person has to endure it for too long.

Another injury comes from sleep deprivation. Going days/weeks/months/years without reliable and uninterrupted sleep is an actual torture method that permanently damages people in both mind and body.

Other times it's tinnitus from being exposed to noise levels far, far above safe ranges. Even "quiet" bikes are allowed to be well above safe noise levels. Tinnitus doesn't heal.

Hiding behind your freedom of expression to justify intentionally and indiscriminately injuring people is low.

cuddlyogre··on Expo – Open-source platform for making universal apps for Android, iOS, and web
Almost no one knows what a progressive web app is. And for most people, the only way they use the internet on their phones is through apps. It just doesn't occur to them to do otherwise.

I wish things were different. It would have saved our company almost a year's worth of development on a pwa.

cuddlyogre··on Inkscape 1.3
You are correct. Sorry, it's been a while.

What I was actually needing at the time was an arbitrary box/lasso select. Does that exist?

cuddlyogre··on Inkscape 1.3
I like this application. The major thing it is missing is a tool that lets you cut shapes arbitrarily. I know there is something akin to masking, but it leaves the original shape data in the file.

As an example. Say I wanted cut a semicircle out of a square.

If I'm missing something that already exists, let me know.

cuddlyogre··on Download Instructions for More Than 6,800 Lego Kits at the Internet Archive
I'm still downloading and it's over 100gb for the whole collection. So make sure you have the hard drive space.
cuddlyogre··on The Password Game
The iPhone keyboard wiped out my progress when the Roman numerals part started.

Man I miss my Android.

Fun game though.

cuddlyogre··on Japan will try to beam solar power from space by 2025
Limiting your future and imagination based on what is possible and practical right now is not how we advance as a civilization.

Presumably, they believe there will be advances in technology such as space based construction techniques or mining asteroids for resources that will make it a viable option.

cuddlyogre··on I Still Use Windows 95 (2008)
Are there truly insurmountable reasons why an ancient os can't be used, even a closed source os like Windows, that couldn't be worked around by building some kind of compatibility layer, given infinite effort and resources?
cuddlyogre··on MSFT is forcing Outlook and Teams to open links in Edge and IT admins are angry
Teams also adds links that gets sent between users to Bing, with no consideration to whether those links are intended to be public or not.

I know this because I searched for a variation of a private url generated by our system only to find several live links to things we didn't intend for the public to see.

I was able to correct that problem in about a day and there were no compromises, but I was intensely irritated with everyone involved that day.

cuddlyogre··on Is hand coding becoming obsolete?
The only way this will ever happen is if ChatGPT and others like it become fully open source.

Relying on the likes of Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Microsoft to do your thinking for you turns the very act of development into an app store submission. If they don't like what you're doing or think you're too much of a competitor, they will lock you out. They will take your work and either discard it or use it for their own purposes. Leaving you dead in the water because you don't have anyone that knows how to do anything because they let the AI do their thinking for them.

Does it not strike anyone else how terrifying it is that we are headed toward a future where everything you do is owned by big tech? Or how we are being conditioned to think how big tech says we should think, or else you don't get to play?

Say we do wind up using something like ChatGPT for everything. In a generation, everyone's mind will have atrophied to the point that even the most basic tasks will be impossible. Most people already can't do basic arithmetic in their head, spell, count change, read a clock, or remember their schedule because of the reliance on computers and phones. Without people having to engage their brain to do anything, it will turn into some kind of Zombieland.

cuddlyogre··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
I just can't wrap my head around the time saving thing.

Do your coworkers really understand what it is that they are putting into the codebase? If not, that's terrifying and recipe for disaster.

If they do understand it, they have to be taking the time to review it to ensure is right. Which cannot save so much more time that it's worth the risk.

cuddlyogre··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
There is something to be said about how dangerous it is to offload your entire workflow to entities that you are competing with. Or have unpredictable morals.

Say you start relying on some AI to build all your applications or generate all of your art, or copy. What if you start developing something that competes with the business interests of the entity that owns the AI? At that point, that entity is incentivized to lock you out of their system, leaving you with a project that cannot be finished because no one in your organization knows how to develop that kind of project.

Or, say you are developing an application that helps some marginalized group or is working to expose some kind of corruption. But, as it turns out, the owner of the AI profits from that marginalization or corruption in some way. So they lock you out and blacklist you in some way.

When it is all said and done, AI will be owned and operated by the same people that own everything else in the tech industry - Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Apple. Are you really content with only being allowed to express yourself in the way they deem appropriate?

cuddlyogre··on TikTok says it has 150M US users amid renewed calls for a ban
I imagine the approach will be to treat it as a spy/propaganda network operated by a hostile foreign state. I'd be amazed if such a thing was protected by the first amendment.
cuddlyogre··on Zippyshare quits after 17 years, 45M visits per month makes no money
Ad networks have no one to blame but themselves. For years, they have served up all sorts of malware, autoplaying media, and browser crashers. The very reason I started using Firefox way, way back when is to get access to an adblocker because I was sick of my system being compromised by just going to a website.

Even now, with my adblocker off I would have a hard time finding the real search result or the real download button. Usually, the most prominent element on a page without an adblocker on leads to spam or malware. And I'm just not interested in figuring out what is real and what is not when an adblocker solves the entire problem for me.

cuddlyogre··on Lego violates GPL by keep Blender-based BrickLink Studio source closed (2021)
You ascribe a level of malice that is unwarranted.

1. No. But laws are rarely written in a way that people without a lawyer can understand.

Do you fully understand every EULA you agree to? Do you keep up with changes to the licenses of everything you use on a daily basis and immediately update your processes based on any changes you don't like? Do you have the expectation that everyone can do such a thing? Is there the expectation that everyone have a lawyer ready to review everything they touch?

2. They probably didn't. But Bricklink has such a footing, they likely thought it would be worth whatever hassles came up.

Lots of people didn't like the idea of Bricklink being bought by LEGO. Partly because it increases LEGO's control over the building block industry. Partly because it seemed to have come out of nowhere.

cuddlyogre··on Lego violates GPL by keep Blender-based BrickLink Studio source closed (2021)
I think it is important to distinguish between Blender and Cycles and Eyesight, the render engine that Studio uses that is in question.

Blender is the application and Cycles is the render engine.

Studio itself is a Unity application that would almost certainly be incompatible almost in its entirety with any source code they could pull from Blender. At that point they would be porting logic.

Their Eyesight renderer is a separate application that looks to be a fork of Blender with everything but Cycles pulled out. COPYING.txt explains that Eyesight is based on Cycles using the Apache License v2.

C:\Program Files\Studio 2.0\PhotoRealisticRenderer\win\64\license if you're curious.

Not that it excuses them necessarily, but Studio was not created by LEGO. Bricklink was purchased by LEGO relatively recently and had no say in its development. It is very likely a small team built it not even thinking about legalities.

cuddlyogre··on Lego violates GPL by keep Blender-based BrickLink Studio source closed (2021)
This may be answered in the link, but at present, the page is dead.

What part of Studio is Blender? I'm very familiar with both Studio and Blender, and this claim surprises me.

Studio itself is a Unity app. The parts library is the LDraw library with their own custom parts.

cuddlyogre··on Windows 98 icons are great (2015)
The occasional refresh is expected. Revamping the UI every two years is not. It makes it impossible to do anything other than watch youtube. Supporting a network with a mixture of OSs that kind of match but not really is an exercise in frustration.
cuddlyogre··on Web hackers vs. the auto industry
The people that are responsible for writing a law like that want to make encryption illegal to make law enforcement easier, with no thought whatsoever to the obvious everyday security implications of doing so.

There’s no way they would remove remote control functions in cars, regardless of the safety implications for the drivers.

cuddlyogre··on Ask HN: I have diagnosed ADHD and cannot work with Slack anymore – advice?
Are you able to just turn off the notifications?
cuddlyogre··on Some notes on the Stable Diffusion safety filter
I can understand giving a user the option to filter out something they might not want to see. But the idea that the technology itself should be limited based on the subjective tastes and whims of the day makes my stomach churn. It's not too disconnected from altering a child's brain so that he is incapable of understanding concepts his parents don't like.
cuddlyogre··on YouTube confirms that it has removed the “sort by oldest/newest” option
I use this to remove shorts from my subscriptions view. You have to click it every time it loads more, but it clears up the clutter. I call it "no shorts"

  javascript:(function(){ var els = document.querySelectorAll('[href^="/shorts/"]');  for (var i = 0; i < els.length; i++) { if (els[i]) els[i].closest('ytd-grid-video-renderer').remove(); }  })();
