It's substantially the same interview.

Does the default log file list the locations of sectors that failed to read? There's also a question of interpolation for obliterated sectors. Many would prefer there to be no data than interpolated data because that's a much more obvious failure mode.

A certain now dead site's successor also parses XLD logs, in case you are doing a rip on a Mac.

I hear that they instruct you to run EAC under Wine if you have a *nix box.

Made $73,500 last year as a freelance software consultant last year. Sole breadwinner in my house - my wife doesn't work.

Paid my estimated federal and state income taxes through the year, paid federal and state taxes at the end of the year, paid for a decent tier in the healthcare exchange, put away as much for retirement as was prudent, and still had more than enough money to take two months of the year off and pay for a three bedroom, two bathroom house in the suburbs (mortgage, utilities, and insurance all paid).

It's not impossible here, but it is impossible in the Bay Area.

You've clearly never been to my local public library - this is often how things are there - second and fourth book in a four book series there, first and third nowhere to be found.

Your public library and services like Overdrive are "NetFlix for text".

NetFlix for text != zero curation, NetFlix curates their selection.

I was going to set up a VirtualBox virtual network disconnected from the Internet to do this - perhaps only allowing HTTPS to a Debian/Ubuntu mirror if I need to install packages. You could do something similar for your Kubernetes cluster.

I was also considering a cheap, pay-by-the hour VPS that I could just destroy after the stream.

I've toyed with having a "Watch me Linux" stream where chat shouts out things they want to know about Linux and I show them / help people with their Linux problems.

You can live like a king on $72,000 a year in the midwest, and the bonus is that the northern part gets so cold in the winter that there's not much else to do but work and stream!

If they did that then they'd have to admit to themselves and the world that they're only making the situation worse, not better, by focusing on these types of stories.
cuckcuckspruce··on “I'm basically giving myself a permanent vacation from being BDFL”
Am I one of the few that is away from work when on vacation? I don't even bring my work phone unless I'm more than an hour's drive from my house.

When I'm on vacation, I'm working on me. Not for the company.

Python 3 avoided becoming what Perl 6 has. That alone is a victory.

Benevolent: "well meaning and kindly"

You can do something that people disagree with, even something that you think is the best for them, and still be benevolent.

Which has been in place since the Constitution was ratified.

This sour grapes whining by Clinton supporters is like a baseball team complaining that they lost a baseball game because while they scored fewer runs they had more hits and fewer errors. Except that's not how baseball games are scored, and that's known from the beginning of the game.

(Just to get it out of my way: I did not vote for Trump, and I've never supported the man. I'm just sick of people complaining about losing by the rules of the system they knew was in place when they started.)

cuckcuckspruce··on Cheating Fortnite players are flooding the internet with malware
We punish antisocial and deceptive behavior when it has a material effect on people - damages to property to clean up, bodily injury, lost wages, etc.

Losing in a video game does not lead to those things. You're playing a game. Next you'll say that if someone slips themselves an extra $500 as the banker in Monopoly they should be waterboarded for committing grand larceny.

cuckcuckspruce··on Cheating Fortnite players are flooding the internet with malware
Let me make sure I'm understanding you correctly and give you a chance to clarify if I am misunderstanding (instead of immediately assuming the least charitable interpretation).

Are you suggesting that cheaters in video games (not played in a competition for money, just playing casually) should suffer career, travel, and social consequences in the real world away from the game?

Laws prohibiting same sex marriage and laws prohibiting polygamy limit people from marrying people that they choose.

Why should the state be okay with two men getting married to each other and not two men getting married to the same woman? Or three women all getting married to each other?

The colloquial definition used by most of the US citizenry and on television news programs on both 24-hour cable networks and broadcast television.

That doesn't make that definition correct...

cuckcuckspruce··on Anthony Bourdain has died
I had success in that I'm still alive.

I have called a suicide hotline. They determined that I was a danger to myself. The police came to my house and took me to a crisis center where I was held against my will for seventy-two hours where other unsupervised, unmedicated residents of a facility for observation before being released.

If I am ever suicidal again I'll just skip the suicide hotline. They were no help, and those seventy-two hours were the worst of my life.
