Could someone please inform me...under what domain does such abstract esoteric language make programming either easier or more efficient?

Amen.
cubano··on Thailand cave rescue: all 12 boys and coach successfully rescued
People can live over 60 days without food, so maybe that part isn't so unexpected.

Water of course is a different story..I believe after 48 hours severe dehydration sets in...after 3 days...kaput.

OMG...me too!

Don't forget The Source as well...man did I ring up some outrageous bills back then ugh.

cubano··on Half of ICOs Die Within Four Months After Token Sales Finalized
My personal bet is that blockchains will be like XML: a technology that was going to be The FUTURE for a while, got put into a bunch of things...

That's an outstanding analogy, one I had not considered before, but certainly XML is far less..err...includable is perhaps the word(?)... into a software project then a blockchain-based datastore and verification would be, right?

Let's just hope a XSLT-like companion to the blockchain is never developed...

cubano··on How scammers get away with fraud
This is surprising to me for when I was in Florida prison in 2003 there was a man who was serving a 15-year "3 strikes" sentence for stealing a rusty $30 bike off a house porch.

I was incredulous, as of course was he, and I asked to look at his paperwork because, frankly, I didn't believe him.

Often, I have learned, when you hear of things like this in the system, once you look at the paperwork you find out "oh, on top of stealing the bicycle you also pulled a gun on someone" or something of the like that explains things.

Not this time...the guy was a drug addict in his 40's who had a lifetime of petty crap, and I guess the judge was in a shit mood the day of sentencing. Since a porch is attached to a house..an "occupied dwelling" in Florida parlance, this was considered a rather serious crime, thus the 15-year bam!

I guess I'm trying to say...it depends upon several factors how things like this are going to be treated. To be honest, I have a few "friends" in Vegas now that are telling me they are really cracking down on fraud and handing out real time behind relatively minor offenses.

Just carrying a fake ID in Vegas with priors will get you a 2-5 year state-sponsored vacation.

cubano··on Show HN: Clothes shopping app UI built in React Native
I am wrong to wonder why this doesn't run in a browser, or does it?

I was under the impression React uses the browser DOM (or virtual DOM of course) to render its components...wouldn't that mean it can run on the desktop in a browser?

cubano··on After the Fall: Ten Years After the Crash
Ultimately I think we will avoid World War III because the corporations don’t want it;

..today, it should have ended with.

Tomorrow, as they say, is a whole new ball game and it's certainly hard to predict what our sociopathic corporate masters will want for us then.

I agree with your premise, however. Killing your customers is usually considered "bad business" and is to be avoided most times.

However, given certain political and economic conditions, I do believe corporations could easily be convinced to give the go ahead to War.

cubano··on After the Fall: Ten Years After the Crash
If they are leaving a place of "war and violence", I am sure some unemployment as the worst social condition hardly could be construed as an "even bleaker future ahead".
cubano··on Id Software
Wow...that's amazingly interesting!

I am a musician as well and I do remember its MIDI-specs were top-of-the-line. I never really got the chance to use it in that way but thinking about that almost makes me want to pick one up and give it a go...

Can you tell me more about your setup?

cubano··on ‘A Powerful Signal of Recessions’ Has Wall Street’s Attention
It's my current understanding that recessions are caused not by economic news, but by the people's reaction to it's apparent demise.

I feel like they are priming the pump with stuff like this...I guess it's time to hit the flush button on the Dow and suck all that "buy-n-hold" money outta the market, and start the cycle all over again.

Cynical? I guess but I call it like I see it.

cubano··on Layoffs at Watson Health Reveal IBM’s Problem with AI
Isn't this just the same problem IBM has had for...well...most of my adult life?

I had a contract gig at IBM Advanced Technology in Boca for about 18 months in early 2001-2002. Talk about missing the boat...

I was brought in to prop up a soon-to-be-failed project for the Japanese government...basically a "Napster for Tokyo" that would allow paid-for-play C2C song sharing for customers of "the Big 5" record companies.

I asked simple questions that no one could answer...why would people pay for content when it was so easily available via other means? you are using DRM how??? really? you need a special player to play the music?

Why would anyone do that?

I stayed for a few simple reasons...the fat consultant check I cashed every Friday. Exposure to some outstanding engineers and coders where I got to learn from true talent. The great strip club on A1A next to my rental in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

But reading over this article reminds me that IBM is just too big to get out of its own way, and has been for the longest time.

cubano··on Id Software
I always dislike it when the Amiga 1200 is mentioned as a forerunner to modern computing and the wonderful, albeit buggy, Atari 1040ST, released in 1985, is totally forgotten about

Using the Motorola 680000 with 32 bit internal/16 bit external buses and color bit-mapped graphics, my ST, hardware wise, totally blew away all other PCs from a technical POV and it just annoys me when the Amiga gets all this love the and the ST gets none whatsoever.

cubano··on Anthony Bourdain has died
I've always shared a fairly deep connection with Mr. Bourdain for two reason...number one, I actually look enough like him that when I travel I am constantly being asked if I am him, or do I know that I look like him etc...

The second is that we were both functional heroin addicts for some part of our professional lives.

His tell-all book "Kitchen Confidential" hit home to me like a 20-oz T-bone and a good bottle of red. His unafraid discussions of his addictions were a breath of fresh air in the otherwise stultified environment of talking-about-work.

There is little doubt in my mind that his struggles with addiction are related to the suicide, at some perhaps never to be known level.

He entertained the shit outta me, so he will be missed...cheers to you Anthony we hardly knew you.

cubano··on Anthony Bourdain has died
"Mental illness" gives us all a safe little place to store the horror.
cubano··on On null
After 35 years of hearing debates and suppositions on null in C, C++, and <insert modern programming language here>, I feel that "null discussions" now metaphorically model null itself, as they share all the same features...

I think I could go on, but perhaps you get my point.

cubano··on Lessons learned from a failing local mall
You should let him ride his bike freely and not give into your fear-based biases. I'll bet if you look up crime statistics, your town is probably safer now then it was then.

So why would you keep him from exploring and learning how to take care of himself alone and with friends?

cubano··on Friendship’s Dark Side
I lived this world almost everyday I was incarcerated in Florida State Prison, and the dynamic certainly was interesting.

What I noticed happened is each group first starts picking up on the speech patterns and mannerisms of the other and begins to emulate them. Without a doubt, this is a very important step for two-way communication to develop.

It does take a significant amount of effort to keep things from deteriorating though, and just if just one person in the group decides against integrating, things can become unstable quite quickly.

cubano··on The End of My VC Career
> Am I the only one who doesn't care about anybody's sexual past?

In general, I don't care either...however, if I was to see multiple under-15 charges I certainly would 1. like to be aware of the info and 2. keep my 14yo daughter away from this disturbed predator.

Is their nothing in anyone's past that would give you pause?

This product is too obvious and to doable for it to that far off, so hopefully a bit more patience is all we need.
cubano··on Pinebook: An Affordable 64-bit ARM based Open Source Notebook
Refurbished by a reputable re-seller always seems to work well for me, altho it adds a bit to the cost.

I've picked up i5(2600)/8g/500G laptops for 150 like this on several occasions.

cubano··on The high modernism of social media companies
From this perspective, the user is merely a pawn in the game of revenue projections and market expectations.

I've been in the IT/software game since the mid 80's, where fresh out of engineering college I started my first software company, writing add-ons to BBS's in C using btreive as our database and I'm not sure if a "user" has ever been anything but...

cubano··on Based on his testimony today, Mark Zuckerberg puts users last during a crisis
> 2.9 million more votes is a big fucking deal IMO>

Not at all, really...it's simple economics to see why this is so.

You see, Trump didn't have to win the popular vote, he had to win the electoral college to become President, and because of this, all sort of possibilities emerge about being KILLED in the pop vote and winning elections.

Trump hardly spent a dime in CA...therefore in the most populous state he handed Clinton a huge pop vote tally. But he very wisely chose to spend his money and time in swing states like MI and OH and others where a much smaller vote count could swing the election to his favor.

I could do the math for you, but that would be I think too reductionist.

cubano··on Based on his testimony today, Mark Zuckerberg puts users last during a crisis
Oh man the irony in what you just said...

> We have a habit of being kind of condescending towards rural voters, and the trend towards, 'you didn't have any agency, you were just manipulated into this' is uncomfortable to me.

The reality is that these "rural" voters almost surely have far more agency then any typical city dweller does due to the nature of the environment in which each lives, so it's just a fucking joke that Trump "duped" these "dumb hicks" into voting for him.

Psst...come closer...you want to hear the real reason he won???

H. Clinton was without any doubt the absolute worse candidate in the history of 20th and 21st century politics. period end-of-story.

cubano··on Based on his testimony today, Mark Zuckerberg puts users last during a crisis
> From the UK it looks like this. Trump used data, Facebook helped, politicians are upset that Trump was helped by the Facebook platform (conveniently forgetting that every campaign before that has used large amounts of Facebook user data), let's punish Facebook.

Bingo we have a winner.

That's exactly what this is really about...nothing more. Our media and political masters are still in deep shock that Trump usurped them and stole the most coveted position from them as an outsider.

Heads must roll! Talk about not caring about it "users"...almost half the population of the US voted for Trump, and these elites couldn't care less about them or the message they are obviously trying to send.
