Your project is super interesting to me as a recovering C programmer whom now makes a living with PHP...great job with the example as well.

cubano··on Ask HN: Do you charge your webdesign clients for ongoing hosting and support?

You make it painfully clear in the original contract that all changes and features requests require additional cost quotes.

cubano··on How to present a GitHub project for your resume (2016)
For the last two or three contract jobs I have got, including my current one, just the fact I had a working github repos was enough to impress the hiring guys.

In all three cases, I eventually trained everyone how to use git, so there is that as well.

So not really, right? Code is just symbols on a screen.

It's the abstractions that count.

cubano··on 'A reckoning for our species': the philosopher prophet of the Anthropocene
Firstly, isn't labeling this epoch "Anthropocene" somewhat premature and mostly political in nature?

According to data surrounding the channeled scablands[0] in Washington state, the earth has been through at least 19 severe cooling periods in the past 2 million years, the approximate time homo sapian and our very close evolutionary ancestors have survived and, in our case at least, thrived beyond all possible expectation.

All this with mostly just the barest bits of technology...fire, sharpened flints etc etc. These cooling events have been massive in scope; Manhattan Island was under 2 miles of ice and glaciers came all the way down to north Georgia.

In other words, we are really good at dealing with a changing environment no matter what the cause could be.

As I read the article, this "philosopher prophet" seems to be nothing of the kind, unless you consider a religious-type zeal for a silly and pretentious prediction of the total destruction of the earth's ecosystem some sort of deep insight.

That's utterly preposterous. Ice core samples[1] of greenhouse gases (you know, actual data points not so-far-very-inaccurate computer models) show we seem to be right on cycle basically and show little scientific basis for the hysterics that this man is being genuflected for in the article.

Of course we should all be concerned about keeping a cleaner environment...who the fuck is for dirty water and air?

Others say the blame for the despoliation of the Earth
should be laid at the feet not of humanity in general, but
of (predominantly white, western and male) capitalism.
Oh now we are getting at the meat of things. Sure of course blame "white men" for all the worlds ills. Predictable...and for the record I am not a "white" male.

Aren't these the same "white men" who basically gave us the industrial revolution, anti-biotics and vaccines that have saved 100's of millions, and a global economy tied to the WWW that is lifting 100's of thousands out of poverty daily?

More to the point...would this be the same capitalism that is responsible in the US for an over 12% reduction in CO2 over the past 10 years?[2]

Yes I know..all this just becomes political in nature and I certainly am not going to change any minds here or anywhere, really. I just can't for the life of my understand why so many people feel the need to underestimate humanity's abilities to fix and deal with pretty much anything the environment throws at us.

Besides a huge meteor impact of course.

cubano··on The rise of dunking and the three-point shot
Besides computers, basketball was the other pillar of my young life. At 12yo I was 6'3" and was playing basketball approx 7 hours a day at the local recreation center mostly to get away from my verbally abusive parents.

By 14yo, I was playing, as a freshmen in high school, on the varsity team with the second highest scoring and rebounding averages on the team. My basketball career ended suddenly with a ACL knee injury the first practice of my senior year.

My quite tenuous claim-to-fame is I once scored, in high school, 32 points against 6'11" Will Perdue, whom eventually won a world title with the Chicago Bulls.[0]

Modern basketball analytics have discovered that there are only 2 good shots...a 3-pointer and a dunk. If you do the math, the added extra point for a "three" and the very high-percentage outcome of 2 points for a dunk make them the ideal scoring mechanisms.

cubano··on Ask HN: Does anybody else feel overwhelmed while reading HN?
Everyone is overwhelmed by envy-stoking social media. Humanity simply did not evolve to process information from the whole world instantly.

Up to a short time ago, most humans never ventured farther then 5 miles from their birthplaces in their entire lives. Before printing presses, books, and finally newspapers, all news was word of mouth...a very limited bandwidth indeed.

Even newspapers really were nothing but mostly gossip and had very limited work-related information for almost everyone, so feeling totally overwhelmed by the avalanche of targeted career knowledge is not only ok but actually totally appropriate.

cubano··on Americans from Both Political Parties Overwhelmingly Support Net Neutrality
Local loop unbundling is a very much needed thing and I've been for since Bob Metcalfe used to push for it back in the 90's, but the name hardly virtue-signals like "Net Neutrality" does.

I don't really see how the two are at all similar though.

cubano··on Why printers add secret tracking dots
This was 2001 remember, and all the "p-notes", as they were called, I created were the old-school bills with few security measures.

Yes I passed them at fast-food places and, to be honest, for drug deals, which perhaps doesn't count as much to some, but I do remember a McDonalds where the drive-thru person said "sorry we can't take this" and I just feigned surprise and handed them a real note.

Also, I used a linen paper from office depot that gave the notes a decent feel.

cubano··on Americans from Both Political Parties Overwhelmingly Support Net Neutrality
Who, when asked, wouldn't support "Net Neutrality?"

It sounds like something everyone should be for.."hey, Net Neutrality hell yeah and we shouldn't club baby seals either!"

As always, its the policies that really matter...having a catchy must-be-for-it-for-virtue-signaling moniker hardly explains what going on in the back rooms where the legislation is being written.

It's like the "Affordable Care Act"...who doesn't want affordable-fucking-care?

We are all currently learning, however, that this "care" is hardly that and "affordable" is nowhere in sight.

cubano··on Housing a prisoner in California costs more than a year at Harvard
The State of Florida in 1998, in order to fight disparity in sentencing, created a "scoring system"[0] where every crime in Florida is given a number that corresponds to the number of months in prison that crime could carry.

The scoring system is byzantine as all hell and I challenge anyone to figure it out.[1]

"Scoring out" is simply a term used by Florida convicts to explain how much time they got among themselves I guess. Maybe it was inappropriate to use it here.

Gain-time is a sentence reduction scheme where people get time off their total sentence for staying out of trouble.

cubano··on Whiteboard Interviews Suck, Get Good at Them Anyway
What I remember about much of that code I looked at in DS classes way back in the 80's was that, due to very limited memory space, all the variables were like I,J,K and X,Y,Z.

You have no idea how much more difficult that made it to follow sorts and tree algorithms. Thankfully, I seemed to have some sort of coding gift that allowed me to write the damn things at the terminal and make them work.

I got A's in all my CS classes, but now I guess I am so used to the magics of PHP object handling I've literally stopped caring about that shit.

It's hard to see why I would want to again.

cubano··on Housing a prisoner in California costs more than a year at Harvard
No...you get sent home.

Let me give a concrete example here, direct from experience.

Florida DOC mandates you must do 85% of your prison (not jail...all jails have different gain time schemes just to make it really confusing) sentence, so that is roughly 5 days a month.

Lets say you score out to 22 months like I was many years ago...thats a total of 110 potential gain-time days off my sentence...great I think almost 4 months!

BUT...let's say I did 13 months in jail waiting for sentencing so I only have to do 9 more in prison.

In most prison systems, I would NOT be able to recover all my potential gain-time because the 13 months county-time did not count for my prison gain time, and perhaps I would only get 9*5 or 45 days gain-time against my sentence.

Get it?

cubano··on Housing a prisoner in California costs more than a year at Harvard
Right of course..."time served" is a very common sentence for misdemeanor offenses where you could not bond out, and I certainly have an good "idea" what it means.

Also, if you are willing to take a ungodly amount of probation, it is quite possible you will get time-served on your felony charges as well.

I am talking about serious felony offenses where people get sent for multi-year prison sentences, and in those cases, time sitting in jail waiting to get to prison is not eligible for prison gain time.

cubano··on Housing a prisoner in California costs more than a year at Harvard
No I most definitely did not make a mistake.

Yes CCDC aka Clark County Detention Center (aka Las Vegas County Jail) is a jail in downtown Las Vegas where I did my kitchen slave labor recently on a 90-day sentence for basically jaywalking.

If I were to be sentenced for more then a year, I would have been sent to a prison somewhere in the boonies of Nevada away from Vegas.

The OP discussed a "3-year jail sentence", and I simply explained that would not be possible as jail and prison are significantly different institutions with very different implications.

I don't think I am wrong to continually express the difference between the two.

> For example, you are sentenced to 3 years of jail for a non-violent drug offense. How long do you serve in jail?

You don't get 3 years in jail, you get 3 years in prison. The only jail time you do waiting to be sentenced to prison is the time you wait to go to court.

You get no gain time for time spent in jail for your prison sentence, so its often called dead time or day-for-day or something.

>An ironic application of the prisoners delma. If none of the prisoners would be willing to be a slave, the state could not hold them all, or 'extend' their sentences because of overcrowding.

This is an interesting observation, but here is how thats dealt with; anyone whom discusses a general purpose strike against working is charged with a serious felony "inciting to riot" and is given an "outside charge" and is probably spending years more in prison.

That's how they do that.

cubano··on Housing a prisoner in California costs more than a year at Harvard
CCDC gives approx 10 days a month gain time to all sentenced inmates regardless of if you work or not.

Actually working for the jail only provides you the opportunity to LOSE gain time, not get more.

If you refuse to work, you get up to 15 days in solitary confinement (the box, or I simply call it "jail" because its actually jail inside of jail) and lose 5 days of gain time, thus adding 5 days to your sentence.

However, it does not end there...one of the CO's that worked security in the kitchen often threatened to contact your sentencing judge and ask for extra time for screwing up in the kitchen.
