Wow. That's beautiful. Have you found that your extended family generally follows the rule, or do some folks break it based on whether they immigrate to, say, western countries?

These rules are interesting. How did you arrive at them?
cthonicthulu··on How close are computers to automating mathematical reasoning?
This is a take that I generally agree with. To be honest, I kinda feel the same way about breathless think-pieces talking about GPT-3.

One interesting thing I hear repeated from a lot of my friends is that having children somehow makes you very good at getting things done, which @pg alludes to in this post. You get very good at making things finite, because your child is a natural marker of time.

If you are in a married relationship where children are off the table and you are hopelessly bored, what do you hope to get out of the marriage? I mean this sincerely. I know a lot of people for whom a married relationship with children off the table where you get the opportunity to be "hopelessly bored" is their idea of nirvana. No relationship drama, no children to manage, all the free time to take to travel or shared hobbies or shared life experiences. Perhaps I sense this may not be the case for you?

I admire this worldview. The recipe for a life well lived does not require complication.

Agreed with child sibling comment, I would love to hear more. I used to journal so much more in college, whereas nowadays I do not. It seemed like life just got so busy all of a sudden and it fell to the wayside.

Shudder. That's horrifying enough to make me want to wall off that whole thing in a VPN which in and of itself has a stronger password, and expose access to it from a proxy.

Love this whole thread. I thought I'd add a bit more for those who ended up in the same position I ended up in a little while back: if you're ever stuck in a position where you're forced to use an environment where you iterate so slowly that it takes days to a week to get from one error to the next error: take notes along the way as you go. Take notes about things which could be done differently if they weren't stuck a certain way. Not only does it neatly manage deadline anxieties, but it helps you build a map of friction points that are keeping things slower than you'd like, and it gives you the detail you need to slowly build cohesive and persuasive plans for improving the situation.

Of course, the optimal plan at that point could easily be for you (as it was for me) to leave the situation, but even so -- at least it makes that clearer!

You are correct. Although, I think the idea of the universe simply "bouncing around for infinity amount of time" lends a lot of otherwise unintuitive epistemological intuitions around ecological circuitry. There's a lot to be said to for how conceiving of things circuitously rather than linearly provides space for things which would otherwise end up elided.
cthonicthulu··on I had Covid-19, and these are the things nobody tells you
It's a bit misleading to say this "says more about our times and the media we're subjected to than the virus itself", although it is no Ebola for sure. To me, it seems to be somewhere (disturbingly) in the middle -- a low apparent CFR and yet it still seems to cause permanent lung damage a disturbing amount of the time. Perhaps it's too early to tell and we should be cautious and reserve our judgment?

Nevermind "should" -- we should definitely be cautious, observe and reserve our judgment. It's good to be skeptical. But, draw a line at careless speculation.

That's pretty cool! Is there any material you'd recommend me reading that gives examples of these kinds of ergonomics with traits as they pertain to, say, vanilla web development?

This is pretty neat -- is there any way to extend this to tree transformations to make this a tool for refactoring?

I originally looked at Urwid for a side project I was working on, but it seemed a bit heavyweight for the kind of prototyping I wanted to do.

I ended up settling on Visidata's vdtui [1]. It's pretty strongly opinionated and there are a lot of batteries included, but on the plus side, you can get a pretty functional tabular CLI app working with very little code, and start focusing on your business logic rather than the scaffolding. I was pretty satisfied with it.
