cthaeh··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
if you could press a button that would return all hostages but at the cost of 276 Palestinian civilians per hostage recovered, you would do it.

Just pointed it out for the normal folks here. Israelis are pretty radicalized.

cthaeh··on 'Lavender': The AI machine directing Israel's bombing in Gaza
Annd it's gone. This post is deleted from the front page after being there for ~20 minutes.

Every. Single. Time.

cthaeh··on Israeli group claims it’s using back channels to censor “inflammatory” content
They're not removing propaganda only, they are also censoring pro Palestinian views in order to better enable their own propaganda.

Do not see how this shadow group of techies forcing their views on the world can be seen as a good thing.

cthaeh··on Meta censors pro-Palestinian views on a global scale, report claims
It's because children are by definition blameless, innocent actors.

It's impossible for a 5 year old to do evil, so it's universally agreed that even 1 child dying in a war is too many.

At least that used to be the case before this conflict.

cthaeh··on Meta censors pro-Palestinian views on a global scale, report claims
Can someone explain how every single post about Palestine/Israel is flagged and removed the instant it hits front page?

I have seen this with around 4-5 threads personally and who knows how many I missed

cthaeh··on Ask HN: My friend made it big. How to handle?
I'll bookmark this.

See you in 10 years, and you'd better hope this comment doesn't turn into the infamous Dropbox comment.

cthaeh··on Ask HN: My friend made it big. How to handle?
As a 0.1%er you are already exceptionally lucky.

What's 1 more roll of the dice?

cthaeh··on Ask HN: My friend made it big. How to handle?
Who says I'm not trying to make my own billion?
cthaeh··on Ask HN: My friend made it big. How to handle?
Your goal shouldnt be to work at at an early startup. As you mentioned it's not worth it.

Your goal is to be a founder at a startup, and for all of people's claims that startup success is entirely luck that is not true.

Luck certainly plays a role, hell being in the position to choose between being a founder vs employee of someone else startup requires incredible luck, on a global scale.

But, me and you, the privileged 0.1% of the world, are masters of our destiny. To claim otherwise is to accept mediocrity as inevitable and not the consequences of our decisions.

cthaeh··on Ask HN: My friend made it big. How to handle?
If there is asymmetric risk and reward, then do what wall street does: exploit the shit out of it and make bank.

Oh wait, most people would rather complain about someone making a billion ("Hur dur he didn't work 1 million times harder than a factory worker Hur dur") than at least try to make your own billion.

cthaeh··on It’s official: July was Earth’s hottest month on record
Disclaimer, I'm all for stopping climate change and think it's the biggest issue facing our generation.

But nothing indicates non runaway climate change is an existential level event for humanity. Nothing.

By comparing it to asteroids, and then 10, 20, 30 years in the future, when what happens is nowhere near to the complete eradication of all humans on earth that you are predicting with this comparison, why are you surprised that people don't take activists and scientists seriously.

Stop with the hyperbole. Stick with the facts and only the facts and you may notice that we will have more support then ever in the fight against climate change.

cthaeh··on Launch HN: Financial Choice (YC S21) – Checking accounts with market returns
You mentioned that you can optimize which investments get solds. Assuming my risk tolerance is fine with stock index funds, what happens if I want to withdraw, say 1/2 of my portfolio but the S/P 500 is down 20% (aka March 2020 withdrawal).

Would this go through and the customer loses 10% of their account value or will you guys stop such a withdrawal.

cthaeh··on Australian military to help enforce Sydney Covid-19 lockdown as cases rise
For certain populations (ie young women) the risks from AstraZeneca vaccine outweigh the risks from covid.

Old people shouldnt be scared yes, but young people should approach it with caution. And isn't that what the government is saying anyways- confirm with doctor and then get it?

cthaeh··on California will pay off all past due rent
The issue with claiming that the pandemic caused these extra deaths is that we don't know if it did.this is because the reactions to covid (lockdown) could have just as easily impacted people dying.

It's not so simple so as to attribute all excess mortality to covid.

cthaeh··on Ask HN: 90s programmers, what did you expect the future of tech to look like?
That's already the case in most first world countries.

Most people theorize that's it's due to access to birth control and education, but what if it's a long ploy by someone to reduce human population?

cthaeh··on Educated voters’ leftward shift is surprisingly old and international

cthaeh··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
They addressed this in the paper by making the change small (5 lines). Obvsiously time is still wasted, but the team felt that the research warranted it. This is up to debate and should not be used solely as a reason to crucify them.
cthaeh··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
Its not someone on the same team. Its someone working underneath one of the research members- a grad student who likely had no knowledge of what his supervisor did.

cthaeh··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
Does nobody here even understand what actually happened?

Really losing my faith in the accuracy of HN if such a huge thread is full of misinformation.

Basically (as I understand it, feel free to correct me) this is what happened:

Researcher emailed maintained with flawed code, maintainer LGTMed it, researcher told maintainer that the code is buggy and not to merge it. The researchers confirmed that the code was not merged or commited anywhere. Paper gets published. Nothing of note happens.

Now, one of the researchers grad students has submitted stuff to linux oh his own volition- he does not appear to be associated with the previous research. These commits are "obviously bad" according to linux maintainers and claim that the grad student is just continuing the "merge bad shit" research. These commits do not appear to be intentionally flawed but rather newbie mistakes (so claims the student)- which is why he feels the linux community is unwelcoming to newcomers.

Now how on earth did that warp to whatever everyone here is smoking?

cthaeh··on Why has nuclear power been a flop?
If you read your own links you'll note that literally nobody can directly attribute any negative consequences in humans from radiation.

It's all conjecture. The only direct cause of harm is the 1600 that died in the evacuation.

cthaeh··on Statement of SEC Regarding Recent Market Volatility
If you go to ontario public health website and read their summaries on current covid papers, you'll note that the vast majority of papers come to the conclusion that schools have almost no impact on the spread of covid.

But no, keep applying youre second grade logic: spreads through air-> indoor places unsafe-> CLOSE EVERYTHING.

That's not to say some of it isn't security theater (ie my parents were washing cookie boxes with soap some a couple of months ago), but those measures aren't being driven by the public health, but rather the unrelenting fear mongering of the media.

cthaeh··on Robinhood is limiting purchases of stocks: AMC, Blackberry, Nokia, and GameStop
Just like how the MSM constantly emphasizes the fact that 5 people died as a result of the capital riots.

When: 2 people died as a result of strokes. No participation in the riot.

1 person trampled by the rioters. 1 unarmed person shot by the police. 1 police officer dead due to being struck in the head.

So clearly, only 2 people died as a consequence of the riots, per your logic.

cthaeh··on 18.7 Million Americans Vaccinated
Children are almost immune from the virus. Everyone below 40 is also extremely extremely unlikely to die from the virus, just to a lesser extent.
cthaeh··on How Huawei controls its employees in Europe
I worked at Huawei as intern 2 years ago. Honestly, they seemed like just any other tech company- chill, interesting work with nice people. They even had a month where they doubled everyone's salaries randomly- as a thank you for working hard.

At the same time I did see the "shadow government" but would like to clarify that it seemed to me to progress beyond a team leader you had to be fluent in mandarin, not necessariy be Chinese. Which makes sense considering that yes, upper managements English is usually poor.

cthaeh··on A 432-year-old manual on social distancing
Heres polio eradicator Donald Hendersons influenza control guideline:

"Experience has shown that communities faced with epidemics or other adverse events respond best and with the least anxiety when the normal social functioning of the community is least disrupted. Strong political and public health leadership to provide reassurance and to ensure that needed medical care services are provided are critical elements. If either is seen to be less than optimal, a manageable epidemic could move toward catastrophe."

https://www.aier.org/article/how-a-free-society-deals-with-p...

There are issues with the paper- its 15 years out dated and influenza != covid, but the paper is still useful. Also interestingly enough, the paper also mentions the non-effectiveness of masks (Non N95 ones at least), which was likely why masks were not heavily pushed at the start of the pandemic.

Overall from what I have read, lockdown as we implemented is a solely 2020 idea. We are essentially running the grandest science experiment ever, with both our lives and our happiness.

Its consequences; we are only beginning to understand, and it may very well be true that the "solution" for covid is far worse than the virus itself. See:

cthaeh··on Apple iCloud account and sign in outage affecting some users for over 24 hours
Once when I was setting up my mom's iPhone I couldn't get the app store working because whenever I tried to download something the app store went white.

Trial and error told me that some apple id page was supposed to come up, but wasn't. Just a blank screen.

Tried a couple hours later, it was fine. Meaning their server went down and they didn't even bother to code up an error page. Super lazy.

cthaeh··on Review: A Counterfeit, $100 iPhone X
Face is more related to honour, but its very hard to define.

I think giving a gift to prove to someone that your rich is not giving face (that would be if the gift is freely given without the intent of proving your wealth), but rather taking face or in western terms, showing disrespect.

cthaeh··on Can too many brainy people be a dangerous thing?
This is what i dont get. Isnt is only if u buy stock at an ipo that the company gets the money?

Otherewise, either by buying an index or a stock normally, ur giving ur money to other investors, not the company itself.

cthaeh··on Apple Ending "Fortnite Save the World" Updates for Mac
Yeah but when you use those, facebook and google tell you the underlying email address. Its not hard to just make users sign up again, whereas with Apple you have no idea who you are talking too.

Clearly, Apple has far far more control over the developer with sign in with Apple vs Log in with Facebook/Google.

cthaeh··on Ask HN: How do people become experts?
A for loop, is a better construct than a map or more complicated language features because of the fact that its stupidly easy to understand.

Im not saying maps and other functional paradigms are hard to understand, just that is more complicated than a for loop and confuses people far more.

This simplicity of a for loop is worth far far more than the saving of 2-3 lines of code and some abstract idea of elegance.
