cseelus··on MacBook Pro 16" 2019 Teardown
https://www.engadget.com/2019/11/07/surface-pro-x-ifixit-tea... (Surface Pro X teardown reveals one of the most repairable tablets ever)

If Microsoft can do it, Apple could do it too and even improve upon it.

Also I can't see why the original comment is about "hating on Apple". All I see is legitimate criticism about some issues with Apple products, that apparently many other people have too. Your comment on the other side is very emotional and full of snide remarks.

cseelus··on Falling Back to an Older MacBook Pro
Yes, this is really my biggest issue with the new MacBooks or rather was my biggest issue, until I found out there are numerous magnetic connectors and complete cables for USB-C[1].

Now that I use such a cable (L shape, like MagSafe 1), I find it better than the T shaped MagSafe 2 cables, which would disconnect/fall off all the time from my 2015 MBP.

cseelus··on A Beginner’s Guide to Chart.js
Thank you for your work on Chart.js. I used it exclusively for a couple of years and still think its great.
cseelus··on iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
Is this confirmed yet? Would be sad indeed.
cseelus··on Ligatures in Programming Fonts: Hell No
Why do folks that don‘t want to use them even care?

It’s not that when they are used, different code is produced. As with the editors color scheme, it’s just a personal choice everyone can live out within the privacy of his or her editor.

Personally I find it nice to represent single logical tokens like => or === with just a single character.

cseelus··on There is no good reason to buy an inkjet printer (2016)
Inkjets still have a few advantages or are at least on par with Laser printers:

- Borderless printing (Photos, your invoices with a footer that has a blue background, …)

- Much cheaper to restock with 3rd party cartridges or even cheaper when you have one with refillable tanks

- You can print on photo paper and get out really nice looking photos. Generally the quality of images with a good Inkjet is better than laser imho

- You can print on a very broad array of different kinds of papers, formats and materials, many printers can even print on blu-ray discs and stuff like that

- Many modern Inkets use Ink that is water resistant, so you can use a marker pen on your printouts for example

- Time to first page is usually shorter (no warmup needed)

- No risk of Ozone hazards (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_printing#Ozone_hazards)

- Usually smaller form-factor

cseelus··on Apple now repairing MacBook keyboards in store, promising next day turnaround
That would be Dan Riccio, wouldn‘t it? He is senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, directly answering to Tim Cook and leading the Mac, iPhone, iPad and iPod engineering teams.

Some of the current/recent failures that come to mind:

- The MacBook keyboard issues discussed here

- The MacPro disaster (thermal design issues -> no real update since almost six years)

- The The MBP 2018 thermal design issues

- The MBP „Flexgate“ (display connector design flaw)

- The AirPower debacle

- The iPad Pro 3rd gen. „Bendgate“

cseelus··on Baked MacBook Air: A cautionary recipe
As strange as this may sound, this technique isn‘t uncommon at all. Many XBox owners used this as a last resort to fix the infamous Red Ring of Death.
cseelus··on EU Agencies Falsely Report More Than 550 Archive.org URLs as Terrorist Content
Can anyone with a bit more information explain why the EU might have any saying as to what a San Francisco–based nonprofit digital library can and can not host?

Disclaimer: I currently am a EU citizen.

cseelus··on New WebKit Features in Safari 12.1
https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29359

This issue tracks the progress for such an input as 'resolved fixed'.

Has anyone more info regarding this?

cseelus··on The MacBook keyboard fiasco is surely worse than Apple thinks
The 3rd gen ones with membrane from 2018 are much more silent though.
cseelus··on Serenity: x86 Unix-like operating system for IBM PC-compatibles
This might actually be the most impressive thing I‘ve seen here in a while.
cseelus··on Radicle Architecture
Following the introduction tutorial, in which you add to the Radicle Garden[2] (which is a nice idea btw.), I get a 'The machine owner appears to be offline' when I try to propose my changes.

I think the very idea of Radicle is nice, but having a rock solid VCS is crucial to a developers workflow, so they really need to iron things like that out.

cseelus··on HeidiSQL – GUI client for MariaDB, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL
If you are on macOS and use Postgres, give https://eggerapps.at/postico/ a try. Haven't used a better DB GUI Client and it looks great with Mojaves new dark mode :-)
cseelus··on Apple Finally Updates MacBook Air with Retina Display, Touch ID
The loss of MagSafe for me wasn‘t as bad as expeced, especially given that magnetic USB-C cables(1) are a thing now.

cseelus··on How to Enable Autocomplete in Mac Terminal
Afaik Terminal.app still doesn’t support true color, let alone such things as ligatures.
cseelus··on iTerm2 has a new drawing engine that uses Metal 2
Seems macOS Terminal app still hasn't True Color support. Tried running https://github.com/tclamb/iTerm2/blob/d0ecb297727a59c9ee5511... both in Terminal app and iTerm 2, and only iTerm 2 shows all colors, whereas Terminal app still shows only some colors. My VIM themes also look more bleak in the default Terminal app.
cseelus··on iTerm2 has a new drawing engine that uses Metal 2
Thanks for the infos and of course all your hard word, iTerm2 is an awesome piece of software.

Looking forward to Mojave dropping support for subpixel-antialiasing and maybe iTerm supporting Ligatures with the new drawing engine someday.

cseelus··on MacOS Mojave removes subpixel anti-aliasing, making non-retina displays blurry
That must have been one of the nightly builds from end of September 2017.

For anyone who wants to see whats coming when Mojave gets released without subpixel AA, I made a few comparison screenshots on a non-Retina display:

iTerm2 dark subpixel AA enabled: https://static.imeos.com/images/iTerm2-3.1.7.png

On Retina screens, I don't see much of a difference:

cseelus··on Using some good old obsolete HTML to create JavaScript-free animations
That is indeed inspiring. Running very smoothly even on an old iPhone I tested it with. I will implement something using animated SVG for the 404 and 500 error pages of our webapp.
cseelus··on Not Only Is the Mac Mini Outdated, It's No Longer Mini
> Apple TV 4K is tiny compared to a Mac Mini, but judging by Geekbench scores (Mac Mini; iPad Pro, which uses the A10X in the Apple TV) it’s a slightly faster computer than even the maxed-out Mac Mini configuration. Apple TV 4K probably has better GPU performance too. In addition to all the performance problems stemming from the fact that the Mac Mini hasn’t been updated in three years, it’s also inarguable that it’s no longer even “mini”. You could arrange four Apple TV units in a 2 × 2 square and they’d take up the same volume as one Mac Mini.

Hadn't thought about that. Would be awesome if it would be possible to run arbitrary software on that little TV box, e.g. use it as a real, powerful (for the size), cheap general purpose personal computer.

cseelus··on Say yes to the progressive web
We run a small SaaS which basically implements (mobile) Quality Control for the cleaning sector.

Being able to inspect buildings, rooms etc. while one is offline (imagine the cellar of a clinic without proper WiFi) is crucial for our users. So we had to build native iOS and Android apps to support that, duplicating many features of our responsive webapp. Most users still prefer our webapp though (some use the „Add to Homescreen“ feature of iOS for example and use our webapp like a native app anyway). With Service Workers supported on iOS since 11.3 we are currently evaluating if we can finally implement offline support with our webapp. So far it looks good, which for us and our users really would make things a lot easier.

cseelus··on Android Studio 3.1 Stable

Include the project info in the initial answer from the poster. I have contacted three project owners and now have trouble figuring out which one replied.

cseelus··on Show HN: Web scraping page analyzer
Could be an interesting enhancement. Sounds a little bit like what Capybara, a test framework for Ruby apps can do[1], things like

  click_link('Link Text')
  fill_in('Password', with: 'Seekrit')
  choose('A Radio Button')
  check('A Checkbox')
  uncheck('Another Checkbox')
  select('Option', from: 'Select Box')
