crystaldev··on Some of the world's biggest economies are on the brink of recession
> literally the last words of a fool.

Which fool? When? How did he/she die?

crystaldev··on What It's Like to Work on League of Legends
> it's not like employees have their hands on the knob of who gets hired.

What do you mean? All hiring and interviewing is done by the CEO?

crystaldev··on Mysterious startup Shadow under scrutiny after Iowa caucus meltdown
And distrusting the DNC is not a conspiracy theory. A political party is free to choose its candidate however it pleases, and it came out that they tampered with the 2016 results. A few months ago, Obama was quoted saying that if Sanders appeared to be the pick that he'd "step in," whatever that's supposed to mean. The whole thing is a circus.
crystaldev··on U.S. immigration policy has been a boon for the tech industry in Canada
This is the clearance section of HN comments, there are no refunds or returns.
crystaldev··on What's Happening with the Coronavirus
Oh come on, like I'm going to trust the panic video from the guy selling survivalist porn. /r/CoronaVirus hosts a similar gathering of nutters.
crystaldev··on Jonathan Blow on Rust
Some people have opinions, Jonathan Blow has opinions by Jonathan Blow.
crystaldev··on China to inject $174B of liquidity on Monday as markets reopen
You're absolutely right. You don't have to believe me but I called the last recession. It's not bad news that's frightening. It's a disproportionate government and market reaction. Governments making a lot of noise to protect weak hands. There are a lot of weak hands, many created since we "survived" the last scare, and it's not going to take much to bust them. Stay safe everybody and enjoy living history as usual.
crystaldev··on Google Maps Hacks
Yea that's enough HN for today.
crystaldev··on My Second Year as a Solo Developer
> investing most of that in a bull market makes it pretty easy to do.

Bag-holding 101, folks.

crystaldev··on History of LSD in Czechoslovakia
The internet sucks now.
crystaldev··on Building all of our new mobile apps using React Native
> No, it's not perfect. Yes, JS can be awkward and confusing. Yes, a truly native app built by expert platform-specific developers would be better.

This can't be understated. You can always tell when you've opened a React-Native (or similar "portable") app. It always feels like shit.

crystaldev··on An Update on Bradfitz: Leaving Google
Good luck to Brad. It sounds like the last twelve years of his life were pure Google, it's a big change.

> I don't want to get stuck in a comfortable rut. (And Google certainly is comfortable, except for open floor plans.)

It's oddly comforting that even programmers of Brad's caliber are forced to cope with open offices. When can this fad end.

crystaldev··on High-tax states are losing people, money and seats in Congress
I'll try to assert that you don't have any sun more often then :)
crystaldev··on High-tax states are losing people, money and seats in Congress
As a non-vampire, I have to laugh at "quality of life." You can't use those tax savings, or any amount of money for that matter, to buy a clear day in January. Not to mention the wildly different personalities cultivated by each climate.
crystaldev··on New coronavirus can spread between humans, but started in a wildlife market
"Little baby Joey kangaroo" I take it you're not from Australia.
crystaldev··on Lake Salagou was designed to drown the village of Celles, but never did
The verb is inundate.
crystaldev··on Amazon asks court to halt Microsoft's work on Pentagon 'war cloud'
I decided based on your statement:

> There's enough evidence for Amazon to take legal action.

The "enough" here is zero. They may have more, but you argued for at least zero.

crystaldev··on Amazon asks court to halt Microsoft's work on Pentagon 'war cloud'
So you mean zero, right? There's no evidence benchmark for a party taking legal action in a civil matter. Saying "you'll be hearing from my lawyer" doesn't strengthen an argument.
crystaldev··on What is Rust and why is it so popular?
That sounds nice, but practically a lot of web app development can't be perfectly modeled by a type system. There's a lot of string munging and bashing, because at the end of the day we deal with messy human inputs, and the required bookkeeping makes that tedious and inexpressive in Rust.
crystaldev··on What is Rust and why is it so popular?
> higher level things like web apps.

Frankly any language that makes me write "some string".into(), and all of the other nonsense of Rust, is not suitable for writing string processing applications (as opposed to utilities, such as ripgrep). The business logic of any Rust application that deals mostly with strings is hopelessly obtuse and/or obscured. Languages like Perl, Python and Ruby, or even JavaScript and Java, are more suitable.

Rust focuses on and succeeds at being an improved C++, no reason to use it for everything.

crystaldev··on What is Rust and why is it so popular?
> I pay upfront with Rust.

But you do pay up front! That's a big deal if your design is not set in stone (which is not a synonym for "prototyping").

crystaldev··on Summer Sea Ice Could End This Decade: The Voyage to the End of Ice
Are there betting markets for this sort of stuff? Because I'd like to bet that in ten years there will be summer sea ice.
crystaldev··on Mir: A lightweight JIT compiler project
That sounds right, anybody with memory of 2001 when its deorbit was in the news.
crystaldev··on Immune discovery 'may treat all cancer'
Can we just get an npm package already?
crystaldev··on Mir: A lightweight JIT compiler project
Everyone thinks of the Mir space station first, no?
crystaldev··on Ask HN: Are compiler engineers still in demand, and what do they work on?
This is the real answer, it's a huge career risk to make compilers your niche unless you have an academic background in it. The gatekeepers in most CS specialties are really good, and there's an attitude that if you're not at least pursuing a doctorate/working on a big Google project then you're probably a charlatan.
crystaldev··on Mir: A lightweight JIT compiler project
I was thinking of this Mir:

https://mir-server.io/

crystaldev··on Show HN: YouTube-dl wrapper with added features to easily manage YouTube audio
Anyone else write a a lot of ripper scripts like youtube-dl but never share them for fear of starting an arms race with the content provider? It's easy to rip most .ts/XHR video streams with a bash loop.
crystaldev··on Students defeat new 'Barnacle' parking clamp, skip fines and get free internet
There's an entire industry of selling snake-oil Batman shit like this to law enforcement/mall cops. It's a delightful fusion of ill will, they operate with minimal oversight and get to take advantage of government (procurement), law enforcement (mostly ignorant of tech), and the good 'ol citizenry (cast as cattle as usual).

I love how, when one of these places recruits you, it takes forever to learn what they're about, because their website is nothing but euphemisms.

crystaldev··on Progress of anti-aging therapies by clinical trial stage
Maybe it's that I'm mid-career and burnt out, but the idea of getting to be a draft animal for an extra decade is utterly unappealing.
