cryptoz··on Confirmation of ancient lake on Mars
That's what terraforming is - it creates/modifies/brings what is needed for an atmosphere and water and everything else.

We can't keep our current planet habitable because of current forcings that are not present on Mars, like varying governments, greed, incentives, etc. Plus, trying to live sustainably on Mars is likely to teach us more about how to live sustainably here.

It's quite a logical fallacy to suggest we shouldn't/can't try to make Mars human habitably simply because we're struggling with Earth right now. Doing both things at the same time would be related to each other and help each other.

cryptoz··on Some U.S. cities are banning gas-powered leaf blowers
The frequency of gas smell / poison air filling my whole apartment is 100% out of control. It is absolutely mind blowing to me that with all doors closed and windows shut, the noise isn’t even the issue I have. It’s the poison that enters so quickly and hangs around for so long, and it happens so often.

The smell those things put out is vile and it hangs in the air for so long. It’s nauseating and I’ll never figure out how that became legal in the first place. Like surely if I walked around blowing gas smell into people’s apartments I’d surely be arrested. But no, apparently that’s totally legit to do. Wild.

And of course, the noise is unbearable as well. All for what?! Ugggghhhh.

cryptoz··on AI to hit 40% of jobs and worsen inequality, IMF says
MJ 6 is only a few weeks old or so though (I think…internet time is weird, but not 6 months for sure!) and is quickly becoming nearly indistinguishable from real photos. And that’s not even mentioning the obvious future v7.

We’re crossing the uncanny valley and soon enough you won’t know if an image is real or AI. The tell-tale signs will fade (already are) and the “authenticity” you speak of will actually be there. So to speak.

cryptoz··on NASA selects a plan to "swarm" Proxima Centauri with tiny probes
Sure but such a thing could easily be taken as an aggressive action or attack and traced back to us. I mean, if there is a technological civilization there, that is.

I love Breakthrough Starshot but this is an interesting risk to think about.

cryptoz··on High school student allegedly uses device to turn off nearby iPhones
I remember turning off hallway TVs in school with a visor handspring and an IR app.
cryptoz··on 2023: A year of groundbreaking advances in AI and computing
The key indications are capitalism, pace of current development (what was it, yesterday that mj6 dropped?), and active research.

In other words: 1) There's (a lot of) money to be made in making it better. 2) Releases are happening constantly, why would that stop? 3) Lots of recent research still that hasn't been productized and also that opens the door to future improvements.

cryptoz··on Bash one-liners for LLMs
People in the 90s and early 2000s would put content online and not think even once that a future AI might get trained on that data. I wonder about people prompting with threats now: what is the likelihood that a future AGI will remember this and act on it?

People joke about it but I’m serious.

cryptoz··on Gemini "duck" demo was not done in realtime or with voice
I'll admit I was fooled. I didn't read the description of the video. The most impressive thing they showed was the real-time responses to watching a video. Everything else was about expected.

Very misleading and sad Google would so obviously fake a demo like this. Mentioning in the description that it's edited is not really in the realm of doing enough to make clear the fakery.

cryptoz··on Gemini AI
Looking forward to the API. I wonder if they will have something like OpenAI's function calling, which I've found to be incredibly useful and quite magical really. I haven't tried other Google AI APIs however, so maybe they already have this (but I haven't heard about it...)

Also interesting is the developer ecosystem OpenAI has been fostering vs Google. Google has been so focused on user-facing products with AI embedded (obviously their strategy) but I wonder if this more-closed approach will lose them the developer mindshare for good.

cryptoz··on The hunt for life in Alpha Centauri
The Drake equation specifically only deals with the Milky Way Galaxy and has no comment about any other galaxies.
cryptoz··on Somafm
Just a post because I feel like it's been a while. I dunno what their finances are like but I panic at the thought of them not being here some day.

Consider donating and if you don't listen, check. it. out.

Some of my favorite beats of all time I found while listening. The Trip (formerly Tag's Trip) has always been a top all-time coding sound for me.

cryptoz··on Elevated Errors on API and ChatGPT
`gpt-4-0314` gives me

"openai.InternalServerError: Error code: 500 - {'error': {'message': 'The server had an error processing your request. Sorry about that! You can retry your request, or contact us through our help center at help.openai.com if you keep seeing this error. (Please include the request ID ----- in your email.)', 'type': 'server_error', 'param': None, 'code': None}}"

cryptoz··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
A take oft-said but not oft-discussed decently: where is Google? A whole year after ChatGPT and all we have is a limping-along Bard? Still shocks me. "May you live in interesting times" indeed. I really truely always assumed it was a given that Google would lead the AI future - but...here we are, the talk of the town and Google isn't anywhere.
cryptoz··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
New AI startup announcement in….10 hours? Maybe they’ll take their time announcing, I dunno.
cryptoz··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
Well it's either that or a top-tier competitor emerges in 2 days.
cryptoz··on Starship Integrated Flight Test 2 at 7 Am Central Time
Stayed up all night looking forward to this. Fingers crossed for success on hotstaging - I think that's what everyone is most worried about. I read that due to the continuous thrust with hotstaging they can carry more payload with that design, rather than losing upward momentum during stage separation.

Gosh this is exciting.

Oblig, I can't wait until these are happening every day!!

cryptoz··on Rogue superintelligence: Inside the mind of OpenAI's chief scientist
Reminds me of the healthcare bots in Idiocracy.
cryptoz··on Three senior researchers have resigned from OpenAI
Searching Google is not a good source of truth either; especially their infoboxes which have been infamously and dangerously wrong. And if you follow a random search result link - well, who knows if the content on that site is trustworthy either!
cryptoz··on Three senior researchers have resigned from OpenAI
Also same here. Actually currently staying up late Friday night hacking on OpenAI API projects (while waiting for SpaceX Starship launch, it's quite a day for high-tech news!) - and wondering if I should even bother. Of course I will keep hacking, but...still it makes you think. Which is a very unexpected feeling.

Hugely more interested in the open source models now, even if they are not as good at present. Because at least there is a near-100% guarantee that they will continue to have community support no matter what; the missing problem I suppose is GPUs to run them.

cryptoz··on Text adventure ported to social media
I'm loving the revival of text adventures, especially in the GenAI area (less so in social media, but, still). I used to play Zork a lot (lol in the 2000s though, on linux and it was the coolest thing).

I've made a series of sci-fi gen-ai text adventure games, https://cosmictrip.space/gameannouncement where GPT is the game and DALL-E can visualize for you, inspired by other similar projects. (the game is a bit buggy if you refresh, and signups limited to gmail as I had to combat some LLM-abuse spam (also why there is no free-form text box right now, as there SHOULD BE))

cryptoz··on Sam Altman and Greg Brockman Joint Statement
"more to say about what's next" in Sam's tweet earlier, and now,

"greater things are coming"

huh, do they already have a plan or is this just generic optimism?

cryptoz··on [dead]
Yeah headline should say the "called it" part of the tweet to make it clear this is speculation and was before the news today.
cryptoz··on Comets that 'bounce' from planet to planet could spread life across the universe
I doubt we've found that yet, but probably safe to assume they are. And it's not being suggested that the comets create the life or amino acids in the first place; likely they have picked it up after being ejected from a rockey planet with an ocean during a large collision or something.
cryptoz··on Meta allows ads saying 2020 election was rigged on Facebook and Instagram
Well that's tricky right, since the 2020 election was rigged all kinds of ways in favor of the Republicans. So if you're going to allow political ads at all - which clearly they shouldn't - why would you ban things that are truthful?

Of course I'm aware that the 'rigged' line is typically aimed at the Democrats "rigging" the election since they won - but there is no evidence of that, while there is a plethora of evidence that Republicans rig the heck of out everything they can.

Seems like it would be much better to just ban political advertising.

cryptoz··on David Attenborough is now narrating my life
But like, you can't know what someone would have said in the future if they aren't there to say it. No amount of LLM improvements would be able to know the real internal thoughts and memories of someone. You could guess, sure, but you don't know with any certainty.

People change. Small things change people - seeing a car speed by might alter your opinion on some variety of things, but no LLM was there to capture that moment.

It will always be a guess. You can never know for sure what someone who is deceased would think about something in the future since they are simply not there.

cryptoz··on Is the reversal curse in LLMs real?
The correct sentence would start with a capital letter: “Red is an apple.” This is also completely valid as in a cartoon character of an apple named Red. The subject being the start of the sentence compounds the uncertainty in meaning.
cryptoz··on Unix Time reaches 1.7 billion
> imagine we implemented leap years by slowing our clocks to half speed on Feb 28 instead of adding a Feb 29

Thanks I will imagine this! Too bad we can’t slow the real Earth time down and have a bizarrely slow and long day every 4 years.

cryptoz··on GraphCast: AI model for weather forecasting
Again haha! Still no mention of using barometers in phones. Maybe some day.
cryptoz··on Android App Devs now require 20 people to test before publishing to Play Store
Cute but surely those devices, accounts and IPs will all be banned, along with the developer who used the service? I wouldn't play around with my account like that personally.
