Yeah that's exactly what happens. The 85mm 1.8G is really good enough though! I wouldn't want to fudge with focus screens - I managed to cock up a D750 doing that once. Took ages to get it right after.

Really I stopped shooting film in 2022 because of the arrival of CT scanners at airports. Fed up of arguing with people as I do most of my photography out of my home country. And it's expensive. Sold it all, bought a Nikon Z50ii basic kit in 2024 and that was so good and tiny that I sold my D850 and the rest of the F mount lenses. AF on the newer Z cameras is something special, even on the crap bodies. Haven't felt the need to buy an FX Z yet as the DX ones are so good.

cryo32··on Turns are Better than Radians (2022)
I have used the Taylor series approximations to produce the LUT over a defined interval. This may be generated pre-complication or at startup with a defined precision depending on the destination signed type.

Tend to use radians because we're moving from written proofs or simulations into embedded code in such systems. The code needs to read and work the same as those.

cryo32··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era
I really want something 13 mini sized but the battery life is no good for me. They could fix that with less fat and bloated software but like hell that's going to happen.

The last phone I really liked was my iPhone 6s. Right size, shape and feel. That was incidentally the last phone that had a camera that didn't oversharpen everything too.

Been using Casio watches since 1983. That is exactly what it is for.

You really need a specific focusing screen for manual lenses though, metering or not. The rangefinder in the AF Nikon F/D cameras is absolutely no good for accurate focus unless you really stop down hard (f/5.6+ usually). Decided to just use the AF-D lenses at the time.

He’ll no. It’ll kill you carrying it (had a D3 which is same size/ weight approx).

Nikon at least actually have service manuals for all their recent stuff online now https://ssr.downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en_US/products/29...

Think the modern stuff is easier to repair to be honest.

Actually the 90s ones are generally terrible They are really complicated nests of parts and flex PCBs and cables. Unlike the newer ones, there's usually some older style stuff in there just to screw with you like soldered joints on inconveniently short single wires and glue.
cryo32··on Show HN: Nikon F100 Film Camera Repair Notes
Trick for the F100 is buy 4-5 N80/F80's. They weigh a lot less and if one dies you just get another one out :)

Sometimes you get told what to use. And I am free to dislike it :)
cryo32··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
It's painful if you have to work with it and mortals, not kernel devs.
cryo32··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
Yeah. I just don't really like git. The user interface is dog shit, merging is nasty, it's really easy to blow your own toes off and it's generally horrible. The only reason it got anywhere was github.

The last subversion server I had was on prem on VMware. There wasn’t any unscheduled downtime in a decade.
cryo32··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
That's a very recent change then.

But only 3 in stock and 3x the price of the Apple ones. Good luck!

cryo32··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
GitHub is a mess so lets throw our code into a Musk owned enterprise, famously a different shade of mess?

How about neither?

Man I wish we stuck with Subversion at this point.

cryo32··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
It's a complete overstatement. The USB-C ports are still soldered onto the motherboard and their parts supply chain is shit.

I don't trust iFixit's quite frank "press handjob" because they're giving higher repairability rankings for that junk compared to Apple who have replaceable ports and a good supply chain available to the end user. Also they were all over selling battery kits for Pixel phones which are a complete pain to replace the batteries in compared to an iPhone.

Not that Apple are the bastion of repairability, just their claims are less insane than both Lenovo's and iFixit's.

cryo32··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
The recent thinkpads are shit. They market high tech materials in the T14s machines but the bottom for a huge amount of the line is aluminium with plastic mounts glued to it. Those are fragile and break off. So really the whole magnesium alloy thing is performative.

I preferred the older plastic coated Mg chassis ones. At least they were honest about the materials.

Personally I avoid laptops now since the T430 line. Desktops are faster, cheaper, more reliable, easier to repair and replace bits and most of the time I don't need to carry a computer around.

cryo32··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
There's repairable and there's repairable and it's not quite as obvious as it seems.

The big issue we see on our Dell and Lenovo units is broken USB-C ports and the only repair method possible there is replace the motherboard. No ports on daughterboards like the MacBooks. And you can't just buy the parts from most vendors. Dell is utterly impossible and with Lenovo half the time they don't actually have any of the parts available or somehow manage to fuck up their shipping so they never turn up. Had to charge back Lenovo/Digital River twice. Zero support at all and impossible to contact anyone. And the whole PART NOT USER SERVICEABLE in the HMMs.

If you want Dell/Lenovo repairs just buy two of whatever.

At the same time iFixit are gushing all over Lenovo who are hell and pissing on Apple. The Apple who don't have this problem and I seem to have no problem getting parts for from their official parts store, the parts actually turn up and work.

cryo32··on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail
Have that problem here. I just mirror all that stuff offline. Someone has to do it.

I have no cloud document, email or photo storage at all. Just an IMAP box.

cryo32··on Buyer cancels showing after Deflock shows two cameras utilized by the HOA
HOA and Flock. That is one hellish dystopia over there now.
cryo32··on Self hosted email continues to steeply decline
I have people writing emails to me with an LLM now. We've gone from meetings where "this could have been an email" to emails where "this could have been a few carefully chosen words, not a rambling diatribe which would test the most hardcore Tolstoy fan".

Kill me. With a spoon. Slowly.

cryo32··on How do I permanently disable random Google Photos popup to backup photos? (2024)
Yeah do that. I’ve just started doing this again. I have an iPhone but Apple Pay crapped put and I couldn’t remember my debit card pin. This was on holiday in Germany so I was up shit creek. Turns out wallet apps help make you stupid.

Gone back to physical cards.
