crunchlibrarian··on Inside the Trump Administration’s Secret War on Weed
It's a lot easier for me to find oxy and heroine than weed if I wanted to today, and I live in Colorado. I have three neighbors who deal pills openly, and one who has pretty good heroine. I have to get in a car to find weed.

The effects are already here, there is no need to hand wring about what might happen. It's a waste of time and intellectually dishonest to pretend otherwise.

crunchlibrarian··on Mutiny at the big five is part of the future of work
There a few big time security engineers/privacy advocate types who fought tooth and nail to change these organizations from within. They no longer work there.

Sheryl Sandberg however, does. Guess who won?

crunchlibrarian··on Mutiny at the big five is part of the future of work
Corporate serfdom is definitely the name for it, we're building a two tiered society of the privileged corporate few who work at Amazon, Google, etc, along with the army of lawyering professionals who protect their wealth vs everyone else.

Inequality isn't new of course, but it's getting really hard to ignore.

crunchlibrarian··on Microsoft will require suppliers to offer paid parental leave
The end of shareholder primacy can't come soon enough, it's one of the biggest mistakes of the 20th century.
crunchlibrarian··on Microsoft will require suppliers to offer paid parental leave
You act like Wal Mart hasn't been mandating all sorts of things, in the other direction, for 50 years. The only thing new about this is which way the compass is pointing.
crunchlibrarian··on Bullshit Jobs
Literally zero percent of the economy works like this in reality.
crunchlibrarian··on Twitter’s deletion of its FB app caused old cross-posts to temporarily disappear
Well if it's not good for a corporation then that's that, case closed, pack it in boys, we're done here.
crunchlibrarian··on What Data Scientists Really Do, According to Data Scientists
Data science lost all of its appeal to me when I spent a weekend diving in and found it was about 70% fidding with weights until you get the answer you want and 30% trying to figure out why the data was so wrong.
crunchlibrarian··on The Impossible Job: Inside Facebook’s Struggle to Moderate Two Billion People
Nobody believed all this nonsense before Facebook/Youtube, dumb people had the good sense to defer to others. This is absolutely new and caused by these tech conglomerates, it is not inherent in people.

We optimized the hell out of user engagement, and created these closed loops where you just swim in nonsense for years. The marketing teams loves it, shareholders love it. Nothing foreign or unpleasant penetrates the engagement loop. Keep growing those numbers. What's the content? Hmm? who cares?

crunchlibrarian··on Former Tesla Firmware Engineer Discusses the System
It's so weird to see the same bizarre hacky nonsense I would cobble together being used to run cars.
crunchlibrarian··on Disable SMT/Hyperthreading in all Intel BIOSes
Hyperthreading is fine on its own, but yes in combination with other CPU features it is effectively impossible to secure.

Turn it off or sell your Intel chips.

crunchlibrarian··on Intel Publishes Microcode Patches, No Benchmarking or Comparison Allowed
Not at all, they bungled low power bigly with the atom trainwreck and are so far behind ARM now that they have given up competing.
crunchlibrarian··on Life as a bug bounty hunter
This has been discussed a few times before on HN and I shared the anecdote that I have attempted to report multiple serious security issues to Google and Facebook and have been completely ignored, 100%.

There is a tiered internet nowadays, if you go real name and have a following you are treated quite differently from everyone else. You can't even get a response to emails or forms, much less paid out a bounty if you're not in the former group. The algorithm has made everyone who isn't a minor celebrity irrelevant. I don't care how much it benefits the corporations interested in marketing to me, I don't want a following, thanks.

Fortunately being able to "crash google" at will during cocktail parties and job interviews always impresses people, so I guess I'll just keep on doing that until they fix the problem.

crunchlibrarian··on Aramco listing plan halted, oil giant disbands advisors – sources
Investment bankers working to take companies public or in M&A are not even in the same ballpark as someone who got taken in one of the many cryptocoin scams that everyone has been screaming about being scams for ten years. There is no comparison.

The takeaway is not about love and life lessons, it's about listening to people who are smarter than you when they scream that something is a pyramid scheme.

crunchlibrarian··on Docker cannot be downloaded without logging into Docker Store
Over the top toxicity killed google plus, and we can all be thankful for that. Sometimes it's called for.
crunchlibrarian··on My dad’s resume and skills from 1980
You must be quite fortunate to have such excellent connections amongst the privileged elite, most people will never get past "the algorithm" if they don't stuff their resumes full of buzzwords to even get past some python script.

Many companies these days install tracking software on workstations, as well as for programming challenges during the interview process.

IBM and defense contractors are known for the good old boy game, so your mindset is not surprising. I used to work at Ball and was pushed out for complaining about every single face in every single meeting being white, so I'm something of an authority on this subject.

crunchlibrarian··on Safety-first AI for autonomous data centre cooling and industrial control
Yeah just throw some of our magical AI dust at climate change, that'll fix it!

Why every company's PR team insists on this meaningless self-serving propaganda being inserted into tech blog posts is beyond me. You know we all see through it, right?

crunchlibrarian··on Google Employees Protest Work on Censored Search Engine for China
"Biggest untapped market in the world" is a phrase that you'll hear a lot if you listen to the financial news networks. That's the long and short of it.

MBAs vs humans. I hope the humans win.

crunchlibrarian··on Name and Shame: IBM
I love reading these rants. I wish more young people fresh out of college were confident and critical like this, I see too many people simply accept whatever the organization tells them without doing the research.

You really have to stand up for yourself and be willing to fight in every interaction with corporations, because they will exploit you in every way possible if you let them. And there is very little recourse for wronged employees in today's rigged arbitration arena.

crunchlibrarian··on The easiest way to keep your web apps accessible: Just use text
Remember flat html? Remember servers that would generate pages? Remember when CSS preprocessors didn't peg the CPU for 50ms?

Maybe we should investigate this ancient tech of the old ones.

crunchlibrarian··on Bitcoin, Ether Sink as ‘Sense of Panic’ Grips Crypto Investors
I completely forgot about that, I've been sitting on a 970 for years now, I stopped checking prices for video cards early last year and haven't even thought about it in months.

It's quite bizarre to effectively be unable to upgrade your computer for a year or two. I had forgotten how regular that process was for me.

crunchlibrarian··on Bitcoin, Ether Sink as ‘Sense of Panic’ Grips Crypto Investors
The sooner all this nonsense ends the better, too many people have already been scammed for waayyyyy too much money.

And I personally know five or six people who are trying to start their own coins around <insert any noun> and "make billions". They all seem to think their coin will replace all currencies and commodities forever.

It's the perfect fictional scam for our fictional times.

crunchlibrarian··on Dear customers of Cloudflare: an appeal regarding Tor
There is a disconnect here: I've read so many technical articles from cloudflare about neat problems they solve while at the same time they just boldly say fuck you to net neutrality and aggressively try to get people on board with the tracking internet that their corporate partners desire so strongly. I get the sense these aren't the same groups of people at the company itself.

I've been browsing anonymously with tor and other services for about five years now and the web just gets more and more hostile every day. So many pages, apps, services, etc just flat out don't work anymore even if you solely have a VPN running.

Not to throw cloudflare under the bus, Google and Apple have have created way more issues for me with their hostility to anyone who evades tracking.

crunchlibrarian··on Google tracks your movements, like it or not
We're going to need a small army of lawyers who understand code and can subpoena repositories and databases to get out of this horrible dystopic nightmare.
crunchlibrarian··on Monsanto ordered to pay $289M damages in Roundup cancer trial
It's so rare that a journalist actually holds people to account for what they say nowadays, it's like an unexpected delicious lemonade stand on a hot day when you actually stumble upon those examples.
crunchlibrarian··on Elon Musk faces investor lawsuit
Well he was going to sell for $69 a share but then he tried $666 a share but that was too high so they settled on $420.

The point is Musk is looking increasingly like a joke, which is not what you really want in a massive company that is hemorrhaging money and could actually collapse if Model 3 demand doesn't pick up.

crunchlibrarian··on China is detaining a million Uighur muslims in a secret camp
I don't know if this is really HN fodder or not, but I noticed it immediately after the announcement that Google is now moving into China and complying with everything.
crunchlibrarian··on Now anyone can train Imagenet in 18 minutes
I get really wary of any "solution" provided or supported by google in this space, it's just a matter of time before they turn.
crunchlibrarian··on Tech’s Military Dilemma
It's not a "dilemma", you either support violence or you oppose it.

All this hemming and hawing because people want to be polite and keep their jobs is silly, just be honest with yourself about your worldview.

crunchlibrarian··on Horrors of Using Azure Kubernetes Service in Production
