crtlaltdel··on Stripe raises $600M at nearly $36B valuation
quite a few shops are hiring rn. i’ve been told google plans on easing up on hiring over the rest of 2020, but it wasn’t described to me as a freeze. there are a bunch of startups that managed to close funding before this broke open, they’ve been hiring as well if thats your thing
crtlaltdel··on Show HN: Verify JSON using minimal schema
i saw this and was thinking “hrm...this is the sorts thing i use lodash for...if i even need it”.

and now i see lodash is a dependency.

crtlaltdel··on Launch HN: Zynq (YC W20) – Book meetings instantly with your team
im well acquainted with fpga development so recognized the name from that context.

regardless of that, they will have to up their seo game if they wanna outrank...

crtlaltdel··on Userdir URLs like https://example.org/~username/ are dangerous
noticing a lot of comments about how this is a “javascript” problem. i just want to clarify whether or not people are asserting this is a _language design_ issue, or an implementation of the runtime specifically within the context of web browsers and web servers?

is this a js problem?

crtlaltdel··on Launch HN: PillarPlus (YC W20) – Automatically create construction blueprints
i’ve found these tools tend to be most readily adopted at the spec, estimate/quote and sales engineering phases. the output becomes part of a proposal.

in some places, like most places in the usa, a PE will need to stamp it. the assumption would be they review, approve and stamp. i designed several hundred controls systems for projects in dozens of states without a PE license in the same manner. super common
crtlaltdel··on Lora-based device-to-device smartphone communication for crisis scenarios [pdf]
happy to see this. as a rf tech, lora was promising when i first ran into it cira 2014/15
crtlaltdel··on Zoom’s Use of Facebook’s SDK in iOS Client
yeah same here, on web and mobile this is super common. i just went through this with a PM.
crtlaltdel··on Ask HN: Is HN a ‘healthy online community’? I’m doing a case study for a class
imo, “mostly”. its my impression that this community is very defensive at times, especially when it comes to issues of inequality along gender lines
crtlaltdel··on NPM Is Joining GitHub
i’ve been at three companies that acquired small shops. that 5y horizon to the kill-decision lines up with my experience. most recently i worked with a company (mid size) that had been acquired two years prior by a very large international organization. “its great, they let us do what we do best and are excited to adopt some of our practices”. Two weeks later the senior leadership was shuffled and the mothership was changing things to better match their process, etc.
crtlaltdel··on We oppose morals clauses in book contracts (2019)
I worked for an electronics manufacturer that had a morality clause that extended to personal behavior outside of work that is legal. this is the classic “fired because bachelorette party pics on fb” situation. it was long enough ago, and i was young enough not to understand the implications
crtlaltdel··on SETI@home shuts down after 21 years
same
crtlaltdel··on Johns Hopkins Covid-19 Github Data Repo
i've seen more than one article that at the least references this, such as https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-03-03/virus-...
crtlaltdel··on LightSpeed: Rewriting Messenger’s codebase for a faster, smaller, simpler app
tweet thread by dan on the subject: https://twitter.com/dan_abramov/status/1234801507805138945?s...
crtlaltdel··on Ask HN: A pack of office-dogs, too much?
my initial response was something along the lines of "yeah, well the leadership doesn't really take criticism well anyhow and I'm afraid that..." blah blah blah.

i was just typing out a major red-flag that this place is just not for me.

time to dust off the resume

crtlaltdel··on Pay up or we’ll make Google ban your ads
yeah, in my exp in industrial you can get a applications engineer on thr phone and even an office visit if you pay enough
crtlaltdel··on Ask HN: What are some examples of good database schema designs?
THANK YOU!!!! This is a fantastic reference, and helps me put some teeth behind my instincts when it comes to SQL.
crtlaltdel··on Ask HN: What’s the most important modern simple invention?
idk...as far as complexity goes, plastics are not really all that bad. i'd argue that many machines are far more complex than a polymer when you consider what it's comprised of and how it functions.
crtlaltdel··on Things I wish I knew about state management when I started writing React apps
i've seen a shop start as a "no-framework" effort and it did indeed become an "internal framework" project. imo it was a strange choice, given how much effort had to go into maintaining and bugfixing the internal framework...mostly issues that would have been flushed out in something with wider support.

before being involved in mostly "modern saas", i was heavy in electrical/electronics mfg and there was always a tension between "not-invented-here" and "borrow-buy-build" camps. NIH would stress that all components in our designs should be in-house (electrical metering, data acquisition, etc) while the BBB camp would turn every effort into a 3rd party integrations exercise. at times this even applied to the factory floor. i seriously know a person who was like "hrm, lets build our own pick-and-place for the smt line..."

crtlaltdel··on Ask HN: What’s the most important modern simple invention?
plastics
crtlaltdel··on Things I wish I knew about state management when I started writing React apps
yeah i used this for a while https://www.npmjs.com/package/tiny-state-manager
crtlaltdel··on Trying to sneak in a sketchy .so over the weekend
ha! last year i was at a shop that had a dev manager who snuck in a stored procedure into a prod db. the arch called for an instance per customer, with each using the same sprocs. when one customer suddenly had prod fails it caused all the teams who had pushed code to burn cycles tracing the issue (the effects were system-wide and this was the biggest customer). we diffed the sprocs and saw what was up. the correct code was restored and the problem got fixed. in the end the dev manager in question didn’t have much of a reason for making this change without telling anyone.
crtlaltdel··on Rollerball pens that use fountain pen ink
this thread represents the reasons i love HN. i totally learned a lot from this!
crtlaltdel··on Who Marries CEOs, Doctors, Chefs and Janitors (2016)
sources?
crtlaltdel··on Tools you’d miss if you left a company
yeah in the olden days i had access to a full metal shop, silkscreen, smt and all the components i could ever want
crtlaltdel··on Lasersaur – open-source laser cutter
solidwood faceplates are not uncommon. take a stroll down the electrical section of a major chain hardware store and you should be able to find a few. a lot of them seem to be made of bamboo. as for the dielectric properties, even in a “humid environment” its unlikely to be an issue. i mean, does a foggy morning short every outlet without a protective cover? if your voltages were high enough, sure you could draw an arc through the humid air...but it seems like you would have to hit closer to the kV range
crtlaltdel··on Tesla remotely removed autopilot features from used Tesla without notice
im super lazy; can you link to the docs that cover this?
crtlaltdel··on Even with a $199 Laptop, Clear Linux Can Offer Superior Performance
or my old slackware build circa '98-'99
crtlaltdel··on Bail – Get out of your plans, guilt free
i applaud the lean methodology. minimal detail, free-tier hosted contact form. throw it out on HN and a few other sites (i've not looked, just assume) and check the your conversions per channel in a day or two. HN is a great place to see what tech-leaning people think of stuff (even if it can get a bit sideways at times) and get some free unsolicited advice on everything from implementation patterns to prior art to the occasionally valuable feature idea.
