crowdhailer··on The evolution of a structural code editor
The code editor is for the EYG language and implemented in Gleam. So that's a blocker. The editor is probably far enough along to have a crack at it by EYG would need some UI or web library so that EYG was able to build an editor.
crowdhailer··on Ask HN: If not a bicycle for the mind then what?
only snake oil?
crowdhailer··on Programming languages that blew my mind (2023)
> The entire idea of multi-tier programming seems to have been vanished into oblivion

Not entirely https://eyg.run/

crowdhailer··on Roc Lang – Elm but for everywhere [video]
It can do web front end. but it's not focusing on it in the way Elm does
crowdhailer··on We need visual programming. No, not like that
I really want to be able to program with swimlanes for concurrent systems. I think BPMN is close(ish) but I would like it to be typed in a way which can check of the types of the code I write in a box.
crowdhailer··on My Favourite Gleam Feature
... and misses all the occasions where static typing can be a benefit.
crowdhailer··on Exploring Gleam, a type-safe language on the BEAM
100% agree with this. Some success stories with Gleam OTP in the wild will be amazing. I'm sure they will come
crowdhailer··on Gleam 1.2.0 release – Fault tolerant Gleam
What would you like to achieve with reflection? I know there a few niceties around having them but I don't find myself missing reflection.
crowdhailer··on OTP at a High Level (2019)
This is a great series of posts. I get so used to the erlang environment I forget to share the cool bits because they become normal
crowdhailer··on Gleam's New Interactive Language Tour
I think Gleam will far exceed Elixir's level of use. Avoiding complexity like macros is one of the reasons I think this. (it's similar to the go philosophy of simplicity, but gleam more does it more consistently than go).

But I guess only time will tell.

crowdhailer··on Show HN: My structured editor for my language [video]
I have implemented a few runtimes for Eyg so far. The AST is deliberately small to make this easy. However when running in the browser the runtime is an interpreter implemented in Gleam (compiled to JavaScript) and you can find it here. https://github.com/CrowdHailer/eyg-lang/blob/main/eyg/src/ey...
crowdhailer··on Ask HN: Why is bash a popular scripting language?
Is there anything else you would consider as a serious alternative to python for filling this niche of scripts greater than 25 lines
crowdhailer··on Ask HN: Why is bash a popular scripting language?
> Most Linux and Unix systems include Perl by default

So what's important is that the system already has the language installed and so it's not worth considering options you need to install yourself.

crowdhailer··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
oh yeah. I also made an voice assistant called Colin on the homepage
crowdhailer··on Show HN: ScrapScript – A tiny functional language for sharable software
What is the plan for 2024 and what are the goals for the core team right now. I would potentially be interested in joining.
crowdhailer··on Show HN: ScrapScript – A tiny functional language for sharable software
This is very cool. I have similar goals with my own language. Though I am developing only and AST and no syntax because I would like to be able to embed the same language into visual programming environments.

crowdhailer··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
I've built my own small embeddable functional language with structural record unions and effect types. By focusing on making the language tiny I have been able to embed it in arduino, web and server projects. The aim is to eventually use it for every side project I make. https://petersaxton.uk/log/
crowdhailer··on Show HN: I made a code notebook for Datalog queries
I have made this notebook so it works completely in the browser. Setting up indexes at the beginning is a bit slow but after that it performs well.

I have been using the following stack. - https://gleam.run/ - https://github.com/hayleigh-dot-dev/gleam-lustre

Despite very early days for the lustre framework, the type safety it inherits from gleam makes development very fast.

crowdhailer··on Ask HN: More “experimental” UIs for editing/writing code?
I've been building a strongly typed language and structural editor. The idea is to develop both to get the quickest editing experience. Having a really small language has made it easier for the editor to have a small set of commands for updating the program.

https://petersaxton.uk/log/ Week 1 & 2 I mostly introduce the structural editor, later updates have been more about language development

crowdhailer··on Fresh – Next-gen web framework
Probably something like Gleam lang. That full stack has felt like tasting the future
crowdhailer··on Show HN: Napkin – Build back-end functions in the browser
I recently hacked together something like this, it's good to see someone else has had a similar idea

https://spotless.run/

crowdhailer··on Show HN: Run server code in your client (Spotless)
Hey thought I'd add a bit more context.

The goal is education. People who are newish to programming often don't know why printing to the console is exciting so I hope that this might be a more engaging place for examples.

crowdhailer··on Gleam 0.16 compiles to JavaScript
It's really cool to see this released. I've already been running some experiments to see what framework models work well for gleam based browser apps, which I hope to share soon
crowdhailer··on Gleam 0.15
Pleased to see this release, looking forward to getting JS compilation soon too. Exciting times.
crowdhailer··on Clio: A functional, distributed programming language that compiles to JavaScript
I'm struggling to get my head around why this is a distributed programming language.

I saw the await key word for parallel fib but would like a bit more information about what's actually happening to be parallel.

crowdhailer··on “User engagement” is code for “addiction”
Very much so. It's something we're trying to push back on at https://sendmemo.app

But how do you measure success, we're a messaging app. - Total messages sent - Number of conversations.

Measuring any of this will mean we optimise keeping users on the platform.

We're trying active conversations, where to be active means only at least one message per week. We'd love to find a metric which went up as each individual user spent less time on memo. A "time to solution" metric

crowdhailer··on Ask HN: Are there any task managers / Kanban boards without comments?
Possibly true. We've tried instigating such a convention, but it requires explaining to every new person and every now and again someone in a hurry drops a comment in a place we don't want it.
crowdhailer··on Show HN: Quill – Messaging to make your team better
I'm curious about the claim of "fewer notifications" I'm not really sure that I see how a new chat app achieves that. Would you be able to expand further?
crowdhailer··on Before buying a NYT subscription, here's what it'll take to cancel it
I wish I was surprised to see this.
crowdhailer··on Git Submodules: Adding, Using, Removing, Updating (2009)
Submodules aren't perfect but we've made use of them in a few projects and one we had a process around them they were useful.
