crostlybostly··on Redditor buys used CPU, turns out it was banned on Valorant and they are SoL
Video Game has to be one of the areas enshitification is most visible to me.

Unfinished games being released, no LAN, paywalled features, pay to win, games unusable after support ends, etc.

I think we are due for surge of people just playing classic games and boycotting all the new BS that is coming out. Piracy should be encouraged as a check and balance against shitty UX.

crostlybostly··on Show HN: What 482 hospitals charge vs. what insurers pay, from their own files
90% of americans have health insurance… so all this shows is 10% pay more than the other 90%.

And an uninsured person is more expensive to serve. You need to track down payment and they are less likely to pay.

crostlybostly··on What would a serious AI product look like?
We don’t even have a rigorous definition of what it means for a human to think. And frankly many of the ideas that cone out of an LLM are more novel and interesting than what most humans are capable of.
crostlybostly··on Compressing a flag to 11 bits
There are only 500K or so full length feature films so we should be able to encode them in about 18 bits or so. Who needs mp4 anyway!
crostlybostly··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
But using the outputs to train would make their statement false, since they are influenced by the inputs
crostlybostly··on Humanity has the debate about AI consciousness backwards
That’s a naive take.

Generating above market returns on capital is probably the most competitive arena ever. Why do you think CEOs make so much money? They typically are not the ones that own the capital. They are the people the capital owners pay extremely well to maximize their returns. If it didn’t matter who they picked they would just pick someone and pay them a few 100k and keep the rest.

crostlybostly··on Stop Making TUIs
HTML/Javascript would like a word
crostlybostly··on Franken.domains: Stitched-Together Domains, Because Every .com Is Taken
I think about this too. It would be easy enough to make your own DNS alternative or use the exact same protocol but remap domains as you please.
crostlybostly··on AI boom risks widening wealth divide, says BlackRock's Larry Fink
I dunno, just seems like an okay system to me.

We both get richer, I press some buttons on a keyboard then get paid and go hang out with my family.

I am sure it could be better, but there is no organization I trust any more than corporations these days. USG is untrustworthy. Religious institutions untrustworthy. Academic institutions are untrustworthy. A typical American likely believes in anti-vax, MAGA, Religion, or other conspiracy, so its not like you can trust the broad population.

So yeah being able to work for the corporate overlords looks pretty appealing.

But if a billionaire pays you $100k and makes $110k in revenue the inequality went down, right?

Their wealth went up by 10k and yours went up by 100k.

The reverse is also true though. I am not going to work for you unless you pay me more for my time than it is otherwise worth.

Agreed it’s a multitude of issues.

I just think if people want results they should focus on the factors they can control. Changing government policy and industry policy is a slow process and can take decades for results and often has unintended consequences.

Reducing consumption helps immediately.

How much of this is a cultural problem with Americans though?

Immigrant families save a higher percentage than Americans even when they make less money. Americans notoriously overconsume and are not big on saving.

There are plenty of inventors that made more money than the capital providers. Nearly every founder (Jobs, Zuck, Musk, Google Guys, Gates) all made more wealth than the investors that bought in along the way.

If you believe in AI hype (which you seem to) you should acknowledge the passive investors are the ones funding the massive data center buildouts, infrastructure investment, and paying for R&D that has not yet proven profitable.

This may make you sad, but the system exists to allocate capital to projects like this. And without large financial institutions and concentrated wealth, none of that would happen.
