cromulent··on Ask HN: What skill do you want to develop or improve in 2024?
You've probably seen Seth Godin's Really Bad Powerpoint from 20+ years ago, but just in case:

cromulent··on High myopia is now the leading cause of blindness in Japan, China, and Taiwan
That's the subject of the article.
cromulent··on X will go to court after failing to pay staff millions in annual bonuses
> totalling only $5 million

Neither the article, nor the court document supports that. They both state that it exceeds $5 million. This affects the jurisdiction:

> This Court has jurisdiction over this proceeding pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1332(d)(2). Plaintiff and Defendants are citizens of different states, and the matter in controversy for the class exceeds $5 million.

cromulent··on Mercedes adds a new car light color: Blue for self-driving
I used to do that in Australia, using the "hazard lights". In Finland, they are indeed called "emergency lights" and the police are rather strict about using them only in emergencies - e.g. not when simply pulled over to use your phone or calm your toddler.
cromulent··on Mercedes adds a new car light color: Blue for self-driving
I’ve always wanted another light on cars to signal approval. Thank you, you’re welcome, go ahead.

Also, front brake lights for people to see you are braking. Pedestrian crossings, intersection cross turns etc.

At least I know it’s possible now.

cromulent··on 3M knew its chemicals were harmful decades ago, but didn't tell the public
That’s why Finland has “day fines” - after a threshold, fines are x days of your last years income. 5 or 6 figure fines are not uncommon.

cromulent··on Hyundai and Kia Develop Shape Memory Alloy Integrated Snow Chain Technology
I drive on studded winter tires for 4-5 months of the year.

I'm a little sceptical. Snow is less of a problem than ice, in my opinion.

Studs provide excellent lateral and longitudinal grip on icy surfaces, and wear well. This design doesn't look convincing for lateral grip. I am also worried about wear.

Black ice surprises you, so you need to have winter tires active.

cromulent··on The surprising connection between after-hours work and decreased productivity
maxbonds comments are good.

I was a sceptic about ADHD until I read Adrian Chile's articles about his adult diagnosis [1]. I was then encouraged by those close to me to go and get checked out, and sure enough I was diagnosed (at 52). Then I learnt more about it.

The shock for me was when I filled out the screening questionnaire and mentioned to the psychologist when handing it over that "this is a waste of time, everyone would answer all these questions the same way". She gently disabused me of that notion and it turns out my answers were very different to the mean. As I became aware that most other people experienced the world very differently to me, it rocked my world.

I find the label ADHD unhelpful, personally - as you seem to. It has gone from being a pejorative label for energetic kids, to being shorthand for "I can't concentrate at the moment, give me a break", to being a middle-class lever to help your child get extra time on exams. I can't fathom this one - at school I would either finish my exam in half the time allocated, or you could give me 10 hours and it wouldn't help. What good is 30 extra minutes?

Anyway, the diagnosis has been great in helping me understand myself and others. ADHD is simply the current label for a chunk of the bell curve. There is much variation within this chunk. Neurotypicals are the big bit in the middle of the curve. I am sure that over time the definitions will become more specific and nuanced.

I don't suffer from depression anymore, seems it was simply a side effect from struggling with ADHD and "why am I incompatible with normal life".

(and he has written many more since).

cromulent··on The surprising connection between after-hours work and decreased productivity
> Isn't this "ADHD" everyone that has a hard time getting things done because we expect constant interruption and we got used to it?

I would have agreed a couple of years ago but since then I have become considerably enlightened about neurodiversity and how differently brains can work.

Mustikkamaa is a recreational island about 3 kilometres from Helsinki’s center. It’s really nice. It’s a gateway island to Korkeasaari, the city zoo island.

Also the taxes are really low, especially compared to Norway. Low income tax, cheap petrol, cheap alcohol.
cromulent··on Typing fast is about latency, not throughput
Agreed.

The article makes a good point about how little of software development consists of typing. This matches with my experience also, over several decades. There are so many things to optimize before "code input speed".

20 years ago, one of our guys hurt his arm and had his arm in a sling. The customer asked for a 50% discount on his rate - it was clear they saw software development as "fancy typing" rather than a process of turning business requirements into functional software.

I read his book and some interviews and this is hyperbole. And poor use of “erstwhile”.

cromulent··on Global CO2 Levels
I'll quote Scientific American on his book:

> A New Book Manages to Get Climate Science Badly Wrong [0]

Talking about models doesn't change the graph in the article, nor the heat records.

[0] https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/a-new-book-manage...

cromulent··on Global CO2 Levels
Totally agree. There is a temperature graph on the same page, and - shock, horror - it doesn't start at 0 Kelvin nor 0 Celsius but it frames the data.

For financials or percentages, shifting the baseline from 0 can be misleading. For ppm I think it is a good thing.

cromulent··on Global CO2 Levels
> The modern record of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels began with observations recorded at Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii.

> The seasonal cycle of highs and lows (small peaks and valleys) is driven by Northern Hemisphere summer vegetation growth, which reduces atmospheric carbon dioxide, and winter decay, which increases it.

cromulent··on 'Couple,' 'Few,' and 'Several'
Another Aussie here.

I would say that "a couple" can also mean several. For example:

"Come back in a couple of days and we might have them in stock".

"Turn right where the old farmhouse used to be and they are a couple of k's down the road"
