creaghpatr··on How Trustpilot Extorts Businesses
As a buyer, I just take into account this reality when evaluating reviews. There is still useful information to be found, but the sentiment and comments I never extrapolate to the whole user population. Pretty typical for companies to incentivize positive reviews on these sites too, which is fine with me but also something I take into account.
creaghpatr··on The strange business of hole-in-one insurance
That's nice the club had that, sometimes the player is expected to pay for the drinks!
creaghpatr··on How to Walk (12 miles a day)
Depending on the neighborhood YMMV, imagine that's the case for most of these cities.
creaghpatr··on Today’s CEOs are essentially carnival barkers (2021)
Yes, and I think the points about wealth and nepotism still hold true.
creaghpatr··on Today’s CEOs are essentially carnival barkers (2021)
Unpopular opinion: becoming the beneficiary of favoritism is a skill that can be cultivated.
creaghpatr··on CNN+ streaming service is shutting down a month after launching
They retained McKinsey to forecast adoption, bet that wasn't cheap.
creaghpatr··on Maybe you should do less 'work'
There is also the alignment of schedules requirement for meetings, especially at higher levels. 8 hrs of productive work may not be required but calendar availability is to a certain extent, especially for higher-level roles.
creaghpatr··on Have iPhone cameras become too smart?
Sure, and I expected as much for that reason. It's just funny to see the author talking trash about the 12 Pro featurization after trading from a 7...should still be a big upgrade in general quality.
creaghpatr··on Have iPhone cameras become too smart?
I think the point about resulting uncanniness is valid, but can't most of these features be turned off? Portrait mode, despite the blurring issues, seems to be a popular feature.

Having just traded from an iPhone 5 to a 13 Pro, I can without hesitation say the upgrade to the quality of my pictures blew my mind. Let's not overthink this.

creaghpatr··on How Zillow's homebuying scheme lost $881M
Same, I find this to be a bizarre practice. What's the point if the snapshots are revised?
creaghpatr··on Ask HN: I'm changing my job after a 15-year tenure. How should I proceed?
Love this question. I recently changed jobs to a fully remote role and I was lucky enough to receive a detailed list of suggestions of people to meet, resources to access, etc from my hiring manager.

If you are starting a remote gig, doing camera-on video 1 on 1s with all the people you I would encounter (and often one level above) was extremely helpful for me as it gave me a chance to introduce myself and set the context for those who were not involved in the interview process.

I would always finish by asking for advice on what it takes to be successful at X company, people loved that question and shared tips that shed light on internal culture rather than the typical platitudes. Good luck!

creaghpatr··on Light mode, Dark mode, and Gen-Z mode?
Geocities comes to mind
creaghpatr··on Apple and Major League Baseball to Offer “Friday Night Baseball”
Friday night double-header is a halfway decent idea, local market baseball games are already a pain to track down unless you have a baseball-specific TV package. I don't have apple TV but more people I know probably have that than Bally Sports (in ATL).
creaghpatr··on I'm common as muck and spent £150 to try a Michelin star restaurant
His Chef's Table episode covers his loss of taste, that is one of my favorite episodes in the series.
creaghpatr··on Jan 6 committee subpoenas Meta, Google, Reddit etc. after 'inadequate responses'
The press release is the endgame here.
creaghpatr··on Judge orders FDA to hasten FOIA release of Pfizer vaccine docs
>using released technical documents to support their ideas

Yikes, not good!

creaghpatr··on Dangerous humid heat extremes occurring decades before expected (2020)
That the 'expectations' are wildly off-base when predicting the extent and timing of climate change is a staple of the field.
creaghpatr··on Motorists have been stranded on a major interstate in Virginia since last night
Update: Tim Kaine is apparently still out there after 27 hrs?

creaghpatr··on Unloved by generations of soldiers, the MRE finds a fan base
Some view that as a feature!
creaghpatr··on My Worry for America: General Michael Hayden
>[Hayden] served as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 2006-2009 and as Director of the National Security Agency from 1999-2005.

Hell of a track record to be whining about misinformation.

By the way, Paul Graham tweeted this shameless flamebait: https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1466772296857706499

creaghpatr··on Something weird is happening on Facebook
I’ve seen the DUI question in my feed in the past week, along with several other examples from the article.
creaghpatr··on Mangrove Restoration Frustration
I heard mixed opinions from different guides when I was in the Everglades. On one hand, they want to protect the trees now that they are there. On the other hand apparently the tip of florida was grass up to the beach and then the mangroves took over the whole coast. I guess trying to protect the ecosystem as is now makes more sense than trying to intervene to make FL look like the 1600s version.
creaghpatr··on Allbirds S-1 IPO
Wouldn't call them the best value, but I love my pair they are extremely comfortable and versatile for matching with stuff. Fashion-wise, they are pretty bland.
creaghpatr··on Is Hacker News a good predictor of future tech trends?
Love the visualizations, I would also want to compare against false positives though. From my time here, I feel like there's been a lot of flops that never broke into the public conscious.
creaghpatr··on There Is a Tennis Ball Shortage Too Now
If you're using them to actually play tennis, they don't work nearly as well after a couple uses.
creaghpatr··on 'Arthur,' the longest-running kids animated series, is ending
"You really think someone would do that? Just go on the Internet and tell lies?" - absolutely iconic quote, decades ahead of its time.

creaghpatr··on Easy Listening Acid Trip: An elevator ride through Sixties psychedelic pop
Not sure if we can call them modern anymore, listening to Exit Planet Dust gets more nostalgic every passing year...
creaghpatr··on Burnout Is Real
I love the flow state of folding laundry.
creaghpatr··on Burnout Is Real
I empathize with this. My job is to package analytics and build forecasting models and if the data shows anything less than stellar it becomes super stressful to try and dress it up and contextualize for management. [Proverbially] shooting the messenger is a real phenomenon and no one likes the "actually things are looking bad" guy.
creaghpatr··on Product placements may soon be added to classic films
How far away are we from adding product placement to reprints of art like the Mona Lisa, Sistine Chapel, etc?
