crazydiamond··on List of vim plugins I use - with mini tutorials
Please look at Steve Losh's blog post. This contains great plugins ... was posted almost a year back.

crazydiamond··on What not to say to a depressed person
> 1. “Snap out of it.”

When I was depressed and suicidal as a kid, my dad said "Just snap out of it" angrily. That was the best thing strangely enough. I sought competent help which helped me become a normal person within a year. If I had had my folks trying to help me out of it, I would never have got out of it. Too much "support" and hand-holding can lead to a depressed person not wanting to leave his/her depression since he gets attention, and often can make others feel guilty for it.

crazydiamond··on Think Twice Before Installing Any Chrome Extension
Wasn't able to move to Chrome from Firefox. No proper replacement for Vimperator/Pentadactyl. Vimium just doesn't cut it. Doesn't work on all pages, often stops working. Any chrome users here who use vimium (vim bindings) who might share some inputs?
crazydiamond··on Life on the Command Line
I did, it was fine but I totally forgot about it.

He gives the example of _nmh_ for email reading. I've been trying it out all morning. I think the stock _mail_ program seems to be better (although I use alpine on the CL). I need to do extra work to see gmail messages with _nmh_ (not with mail).

>mhshow: don't know how to display any of the contents > (content multipart/alternative in message 2)

Also, the _comp_ command for composing a mail launches vim (unable to stop that) which gives an error on what_next. I tried pico, that works.

Not sure _nmh_ is the way to go today. If I had to use the CL, I'd use _mail_ instead.

crazydiamond··on Show HN: We want to become India's TurboTax. Feedback?
It's not just salary which is taxed at source. We have Fixed Deposits which are incurring interest which needs to be declared. We may have made donations which need to be accounted for. Most of us hire a chartered accountant to do the filing. Therefore a software could be of use.
crazydiamond··on Show HN: We want to become India's TurboTax. Feedback?
>"no one pays taxes in India"

I and millions more pay taxes. True about black money, though, but those are business people. Salaried people pay taxes at source, we do not get cash at all.

crazydiamond··on [dead]
Most Bollywood film producers fast forward through stacks of foreign movies regularly to see what to copy. This looks like Matrix times Terminator !
crazydiamond··on HH Dalai Lama: Countering Stress and Depression
The problem with medication long-term is that it may keep you in a drowsy state and not allow you to be alert and aware. If the medication is stimulating (like coffee), then it can result in too many thoughts so that the silence is not experienced.

Anyway, that's your call. Getting out of depression is the most important thing first. Keep practicing being in the present moment, and staying alert and thought-free as much as possible alongside.

crazydiamond··on HH Dalai Lama: Countering Stress and Depression
If you are in depression, do continue your regular treatment and anti-depressants till the docs allow you to stop. Once you are treated, then mindfulness/ being in the Now, can move you to happiness and freedom. I say this because no one (I've read) has said this cures depression. And the root of depression can be bio-chemical. However, in the long run, you would give up medication (hopefully in a year), and then the "present moment" is the key. The beauty is that is becomes easy and natural after a while. If you've suffered (been unhappy) then you have the motivation not to give up, to take this through to completion.

Go through Eckhart Tolle and Mooji (on youtube). "Power of Now" is good. Start this moment.

crazydiamond··on HH Dalai Lama: Countering Stress and Depression
> Being able to realize that those scenarios are just creations of your mind and snapping out of the obsessive loop of thoughts it's one of the most important things you can learn in life.

Great. I'd like to add that even the person/individual or "I" is a creation of the mind, that upon observation melts away. This in my experience has been the single most important "event" in "my" life (the "my" itself not having any tangible meaning).

The key: mindfulness, or coming back to the present moment over and over again till silence becomes natural.

crazydiamond··on Simple Truths Smart People Forget
> You can easily replace success with happiness in that sentence. Yes, but my point was that often people's definition of happiness contains other concepts, which are not investigated by ourselves. Or, we accept moving/relative definitions for these that are not our own. One concept depending on other concepts etc.

>It's more complicated than it looks. I think when we investigate the meaning of happiness (for ourselves) then its actually simpler.

crazydiamond··on Simple Truths Smart People Forget
I was not going by dictionary definitions, but by what people around me seem to think. In my country, success has very much to do with whether you are in a coveted job (usually meaning an MBA or engineer/doctor/civil services). This changes over the years, e.g. software engineer came and went. MBA is now going out.

People feel they are happy if they are conforming to the societal definition of success. Your society may be quite different.

crazydiamond··on Simple Truths Smart People Forget
#2 – Happiness and success are two different things.

Could not agree more. Our definition of happiness often includes "Success". And people's definition of success is quite relative, depending on other people's current perceptions and ideas of how we should be or what people envy, or image.

I retired 6 years back, spend more time sitting and walking in parks, feeding and playing with stray dogs, and remaining in the present moment. I've never been happier. Others see mine as a life wasted - dropping a high paying job, loads of money to spend, and becoming a miserly bum !

crazydiamond··on Steve Jobs vs. Fake Steve Jobs
The blog was insightful and fun a year or so back. It became boring after it was "outed". Using "Fake" in the blog did not dampen its effect, so why should it do so in the twitter account.
crazydiamond··on RIP Bill Zeller
Its only worth it if you practice it. And it gets easier with practice. Since you mention your counselor, i assume you have been depressed. One big problem (to put it briefly) is that often depressed people identify with their depression/sadness and don't wish to leave it. They are their biggest enemy. You have to be willing to give it up. At the expense of sounding cliched, the only price to pay for happiness, is your unhappiness/misery and for many, its a huge price. Best of luck. Happiness and freedom do exist. What Bill Zeller spoke off does exist and is possible.

> "I will never know what uncontimated intimacy is like. I will never have an exclusive bond with someone, someone who can be the recipient of all the love I have to give."

So much of what he talks of, even i have suffered _without_ having been sexually abused. He did not realize that many feeling/thoughts he had, come and go in all humans, if they come to his mind. It's fine to just ignore them like all the dust that flies about us.

Please also check out the youtubes of one Mooji. They have greatly deepened my practice.

crazydiamond··on RIP Bill Zeller
While reading the suicide note, and the 2 threads on this, i could not help wondering many many times how much it would have helped Bill had he read the Power of Now. One problem i notice is that people who are stuck in a problem, keep trying the same solution for decades even though its not worked. We need to look at our problem from other angles and be open to new solutions.
crazydiamond··on Vim Recipes
thanks a lot. i've just subscribed via RSS. I've been using vi/vim for 21 years, but good tips for intermediate/advanced users are _always_ helpful. Please keep updating your tips.
crazydiamond··on YAML: YAML Ain’t Markup Language
This is old news. Is there some reason this link has been posted ? What does @aegean wish to discuss.

I've used YAML quite a bit. However, unlike XML, content can get jumbled if there are say "-" inside a field. Complex content won't work with YAML. I once came across a ruby website builder that used YAML for its pages (i think it was called hobix, in the days of _why/redhanded). The YAML would get saved to a file, but when reading it would throw errors due to the content within a field.

So i ditched YAML and used pstore (unfortunately this is ruby specific and not a text file). XML has CDATA or similar tags to mark such data.

crazydiamond··on Redcar: It's time for a Ruby editor (in Ruby) [video]
Has anyone tried the ruby editor (previously called ver) by Michael Fellinger. It now uses Ruby Tk. I cannot recall the name. (Just tried searching, but could not find it).
crazydiamond··on What is Enlightenment? (Kant)
I actually came to PON after finding the silence and I-am ness through a process of questioning beliefs. I was glad to find someone who could explain simply what was happening.

Tolle was great for me because he asks us to stay in this I-am'ness or Nowness and not just dispel it. And that has led to a huge "fundamental shift" as you say.

Just because some of these things have been known for thousands of years and have been talked of by Christians, Buddhists, Hindus etc, does not mean they are a set of beliefs (as some are suggesting).

crazydiamond··on What is Enlightenment? (Kant)
The alternative to following one's reason is not following someone else's doctrine or religion. We can, for example, investigate our conditioning and concepts through questioning. We may find that our reasoning is itself based on concepts that are relative, or believed due to social conditioning. Questioning brings about a silence, that silence in time reveals that even things such as the "I" or person was a concept. Now that's a huge discovery and is not specific to some church or belief.
crazydiamond··on What is Enlightenment? (Kant)
The "I" that doubts one's own existence itself is a product of thought. As is said, it was flawed at several levels.
crazydiamond··on What is Enlightenment? (Kant)
> "Have courage to use your own understanding!"--that is the motto of enlightenment.

But what if our understanding is a result of conditioning.

I think it was Descartes who once said "I think therefore I am" which is flawed in several ways. He was stuck in thought. Someone else later figured out that the person thinking is apart from the thought. But he too was stuck in thought/mind.

Enlightenment is seeing that you are not the mind or the mental story or concept of yourself. And being totally free of that. Enlightenment is when the misidentification with the mental self is broken. The mental self acts out of fear and insecurity and a constant wanting of something else. This is a sure recipe for being unhappy and causing unhappiness in others.

I don't know which kind of enlightenment you wish to discuss, but I would rather you read Eckhart Tolle instead of Kant.

crazydiamond··on Giving up on Ruby packaging
RVM has been a boon. 1. Easy to test my library/app against multiple ruby versions.

2. Easy to run an app which requires an older version of ruby (I typically use 1.9.2).

Advanced features like gemsets allow finer grained control but only if needed.

crazydiamond··on Using ZSH
Your first easy installation procedure fails, and asks me to use this: --no-check-certificate

I used this with wget and it works. I hope this is okay. Thanks a lot.

crazydiamond··on Using ZSH
I am going to use your blog post to make the switch over from bash. I've tried zsh 2 times but reverted (can't recall why).

Please keep logging your journey. Also, what are the problems you have faced ? What did not work ? Any bash_profile or bashrc lines you could not convert? Any bash scripts that did not run ?

crazydiamond··on How a Vim user converts to Emacs
He now has RSI :(
crazydiamond··on Delicious to Pinboard username mapper
Has a signup fee to discourage spammers.

>The signup fee helps discourage spammers and defrays some of the costs of running the site.

Thanks to the entry fee, Pinboard has remained spam-free since launch. Not having to expend resources on spam fighting means having more time to work on features, and keeps the site fast and small.

The fee is based on the formula (number of users * $0.001), so the earlier you join, the less you pay.

crazydiamond··on The Top 14 Astronomy Pictures of 2010
The final pic of the Orion Constellation is stunning. But there seems to be so much gas (the colored stuff) covering the constellation. The third star in the middle is almost lost, you have to look at the pic magnified to catch it.

The spectacular Horsehead Nebula is almost lost in there due to the scale. The Orion Nebula: having a hard time locating it due to all the gases covering the pic.

crazydiamond··on Some Differences Between People Born Wealthy and Born Poor
Thanks for your insights. One of the things that has often pained me a lot is that when i speak with respect to poor people they don't like it (in my country). They are so used to being talked down (my language has various "modes" - talking with respect, talking to someone "smaller" etc).

Equally painful is when they treat me with a respect (deference) i do not deserve based solely on appearance.
