crate_barre··on Choose Your Addiction
Sure, no I get it. I suppose it’s worth clarifying that the biological addiction to the substance is actually a side effect of the original issue (you’re running from discomfort).

Which goes back to the original post, in that, you really can’t choose your addictions, only your circumstances (will smith might be a great example, don’t be in a public open marriage, you’re fixing to start picking up addictions that you’ll have no autonomy over).

crate_barre··on Choose Your Addiction
Substances are also an escape, you just don’t want to feel (or escape) whatever the negative feeling is (guilt, anger, depression, stress, hopelessness, so on).
crate_barre··on Ask HN: When do you give up on Silicon Valley?
Giving up on something is not the same as quitting. Just stick around, what else are you going to do?
crate_barre··on Ask HN: Tech Salaries and Wealth Inequality
Taxes are kind of understated. Even if you take an average tech salary in a major city, taxes and rent just eat a large portion of it. Then it takes a deliberate attempt to not spend what’s left to make any forward progress towards a mortgage for example.

If you spend casually on what’s left, you are essentially working to live.

crate_barre··on Facebook paid Republican strategy firm to malign TikTok
At no point. You’ll only hear the opposite from a small cohort that can hop around faangs. There’s plenty of people working in all kinds of industries that overall suck for humanity.
crate_barre··on Ask HN: Can anyone at Twitter share numbers when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock
No the streaming api is always 2% ish of all live tweets. Wish Twitter would share more info on this stuff.
crate_barre··on Lumber rally cools with transport snarls easing, buyers balking
I’m just glad I’m not the only one baffled here. It takes 4 missed mortgage payments to start going into a default and we’re talking a 30-year time line for things to go sideways. Yellow cab medallion drivers literally committed suicide after purchasing their medallion for a million after Uber/Lyft showed up.

So, yeah, I know I keep asking ‘how’, but really how? How is everyone’s head above water, how are they not being eaten alive?

I suppose infinite house price increase, eh? If there’s no risk to this, then I must be a fool for not buying the MAX amount my loan affords me. I always thought ‘hey I’ll get a loan, but no way on hell am I going to bid the upper limit’, but apparently, that’s what’s going on.

Just a little bit of dark humor, but those condo owners in Ukraine must be pissed as shit.

crate_barre··on Lumber rally cools with transport snarls easing, buyers balking
This argument is a losing battle, so I’ll leave it alone. I just know it wasn’t a Doctor walking in looking for a medical office. Don’t ask me how I know, sometimes you just know.

There’s a vape store around my way that sells weed, and other drugs (not legalized here yet). Don’t ask me how I know, I just know.

For what it’s worth, just on pure number crunching, I don’t even know how a developer making modest six figures can even THINK to bid on a 1.8m dollar house, even WITH double income from his wife.

So, what the fuck is going on?

crate_barre··on Ask HN: Why isn't Microsoft good with design consistency?
Mostly because they lack design conviction. When Apple moved off skeuomorphism into the flat realm (in a sense copying a lot of Microsoft’s Metro design), they really believed in it. Microsoft is without a doubt having an existentialist crisis with the fact that their design is just not on par with Apple, or even Google, and that’s leaving room for various elements within the company to constantly attack what should be the overriding design language. It’s an inferiority complex of epic proportions, especially when some of their first tried ideas are just being executed better by other companies.

Take Xbox UI for example, that stuff has been wholesale copied by Nintendo and Sony.

Sometimes you really have to believe in your ideas, and iterate on your own ideas. Microsoft at the moment (and the past) is coming up with their own ideas, and then iterating on outside ideas, in an adaptive manner. In art, this dilutes your expression. Such a method is only effective if you very clearly know where you want to go, and apply a coating of adaptation (iOS going flat).

Unfortunately for Microsoft, they seem to only know what their minimum base design is, that is to say, a modern enough design that sits next to Google or Apple. What they don’t know is where they want to go. So, you’ll see good ideas and concepts from them initially just to meet the ticket price for entry, but once they get there, they don’t have any idea how to proceed. So they take their expression and adapt, adapt, adapt to what others are doing until we all go like ‘the fuck is going on here?’.

Case in point, decades later, windows 11 now fundamentally has a Dock like MacOS lol. Zero conviction or understanding of what the Start Menu could be.

crate_barre··on Social media platform now bans users for what they say off-platform
The protocol is not handling push and users/following.
crate_barre··on Social media platform now bans users for what they say off-platform
Oh boy. We need an open protocol for social media already. It’s obvious the current platforms are too subjective and these idiots have become like mainstream news networks where they remove content based on how advertisers feel about their ads being displayed on those programs. That’s not what the internet is supposed to be. Need to end this soon honestly because Patreon ain’t my mother or Putin.
crate_barre··on Applebee’s exec urges using high gas prices to push lower wages, sparks walkout
Isn’t that where remote work kicks in but we’re too stupid to realize? If the tech people don’t need to concentrate in one area, good luck jacking up the prices to siphon off that wealth.

Tech needs to create a box. Literally, a hurricane proof box that that plugs into plumbing. Drop it anywhere in the world and fucking live in it. It’s the same box for everyone, like the iPhone, iPhones are not more expensive in Bay Area or NY. All this nonsense over the fact that we all simply need to live in a box somewhere.

crate_barre··on Applebee’s exec urges using high gas prices to push lower wages, sparks walkout
Again, it’s how you see it. They brought jobs at mass scale there. We on the other hand, ship jobs out at mass scale, AND squeeze the people that are here. You can’t get away with both.
crate_barre··on Applebee’s exec urges using high gas prices to push lower wages, sparks walkout
Does it even need to be studied that heavily? What is India and China trying to do? They have massive billion people populations that are poor. Lift them into a lower middle class, voila, you have unmatched consuming class.

We’re going to lose this fight to these countries because our country cannot for a second think outside of squeezing the living hell out of a stagnantly growing 350 million person population. That’s why they squeeze you on home mortgages, rent, cars, salary, everything. They are squeezing because they see no fucking growth and that’s all these people understand. If the population isn’t scaling horizontally, they have no other creative ideas. It is unimaginable to them that an enriched 350 million Americans is as potent as a billion person population. We will actually go to your stupid diner and drop 50+ every week. Why are these people so fucking scared?

Is it better that this was said or left unsaid?

crate_barre··on Ask HN: What do you wish you had done/known in your 30s?
I think your advice is correct for those that want kids. The issue becomes contentious when this is advocated to people who mostly are on the other side of that decision. Going for kids before you are ready is still aligned with ‘wanting kids’.
crate_barre··on Tell HN: There needs to be a “right to speak with a human”

crate_barre··on NATO estimates up to 40k Russian troops have been captured, injured or killed
It’s shocking to me how Russia’s primary mode of bombardment isn’t aerial. Are they holding back or they legitimately trying to use dumb bombs to eradicate civilian cities?

There’s no no-fly zone, you can do the same atrocities from air and not risk your troops. What am I missing here?

Will take a reference if you have one.
crate_barre··on Ask HN: How to find out about nuclear war?
Nuclear war really is the new ‘Is Yellowstone about to erupt?’ now days huh? You are partaking in Armageddon fantasies, a guilty pleasure of many.
crate_barre··on Apple acquires UK open banking startup Credit Kudos
The same reason they loan out the money in the first place. Do they ever actually check if a young person will have the earning potential to pay back a 50k loan? Not really right, but they hand out that loan. I’ve gotten credit cards with 20k credit line 1 year out of college, no questions asked. That’s insane to hand that out and then blackball the receiving party. Liability is on both sides here but only one party suffers in an unbalanced way. For a large company, writing off 50k is nothing even at scale, but for the individual the scarlet letter is haunting.

Overall, I cannot fathom how we tied the credit system to something necessary like housing. It’s absurd to think you are fucked out of housing options for 7 years.

crate_barre··on Apple acquires UK open banking startup Credit Kudos
So I’ve heard but for the thing that really matters, renting and certainly buying a home, you are more or less fucked (at least for the 7 years they put you in financial jail).

own credit score system when paying by installments

These are good ideas. Many people have debt from all kind of life issues and it kind of seems insane to lock them out of financing for … a phone or the like.

The credit score system is the OG social credit system that China ain’t got nothing on.

crate_barre··on The conspiracy to kill Julius Caesar
The implication is that it’s easy to say universal healthcare, student loan amnesty, and stimulus checks for all. It’s harder to say ‘but if we give stimulus checks, we might cause inflation’, or ‘universal healthcare might cost a few trillion a year, and I’m not sure how we can finance that’.

Stroking the plebs is not a new thing. Trump exists for this reason, AOC literally strokes the left with every tweet, so does Bernie.

crate_barre··on The conspiracy to kill Julius Caesar
If we want to go full throttle with the analogues to today, Ceasers journal entries would be read out loud in the public forum where large crowds gathered to hear it (as good a tweet as you can get). He specifically tried to reach the plebs.
crate_barre··on Two-minute battery changes push India’s delivery riders to switch to e-scooters
You almost need a scooter in these large third world mega cities. The streets are narrow as hell, they can’t really handle cars. On the flip side. Cars are stuck in traffic all day and rarely get to cruising speeds without making a left turn into another traffic jam. Scooters let you move around in that clusterfuck and no car is moving fast enough to kill you. Good luck staying safe in scooter in America though.
