crancher··on The Test
We are each a nest of functional dependencies. Perhaps discernment is the ability to know which to introspect. Some people absolutely need to know where the water comes from, some do not.
crancher··on Playa Phone
It's really not that entirely. I've been attending for the past 20 years without networking once. I design and build and run and strike my camp. It's great and zero people try make do anything else. I am sure there are certain percentage of networking striver types but they're flotsam on the sea of the ongoing "artistic rebellion" required to make it happen.
crancher··on Poles of Inaccessibility in the San Gabriel Mountains (2015)
Context for non-Los Angeles residents: the San Gabriel Mountains are those seen looming behind downtown LA in many photos.

https://www.treehugger.com/special-places-in-the-san-gabriel...

Also probably context for many LA people, as most seem to consider those mountains a Hollywood backdrop, not a place you can be in 90 minutes from anywhere in LA (with favorable traffic).

crancher··on On the non-use of AI in my writing process
I find this "traitorous to the human species" interesting. You could not form these thoughts without an accumulated knowledge stored/accessed outside human biology. No other species forms such explicit thoughts because they lack access to that accumulated pattern of useful sequences. We've already "transcended" our biology in that sense. Who is directing... that becomes interesting in new ways once outside-a-body sequences start to accumulate. My guess is that it's that accumulation that sets the trajectory, just as DNA's "accumulation" of useful sequences produced forms fit for the local environment(s).
crancher··on On the non-use of AI in my writing process
I tackle these ideas/questions head-on using Claude to help book-shape the result. https://spine.zice.app/jeremy/the-smaller-infinity In my view, the accumulating density of useful language/token patterns is the real story, not who/what is processing them. There is no "why" other than the universe's physics permit such accumulation, but that doesn't make the "how" any less interesting. You can click the header and copy the whole thing to clipboard, ask your favored agent for summary/conversation.
crancher··on Fable 5 Is Back
Holding symbols in a useful order durably and accessibly is an ongoing energetic event. How/why does it happen?
crancher··on Fable 5 is Back
Same problem, in-progress book about language and thermodynamics gets flagged. Their classifier is just a regex I guess?
crancher··on Apple Core AI Framework
Apfel is very useful, thanks for the effort.
crancher··on Siri AI
I think the key thing is that Spotlight is now creating a... knowledge graph? of everything on your device for Siri's consideration. That's potentially very useful.
crancher··on MacBook Neo Deep Dive: Benchmarks, Wafer Economics, and the 8GB Gamble
Yes, yes, and yes.
crancher··on OpenWarp
Came here looking for someone mentioning this very issue. Did they not even view the model's output once? So strange.
crancher··on Why do we tell ourselves scary stories about AI?
We're hardwired to fear the rustle in the grass, and successful infrastructure gets backgrounded. Pain is a signal. How much time do you spend contemplating your skeleton outside of pain-related skeletal events?
crancher··on Microsoft's "fix" for Windows 11
Macs don't need Apple accounts at all. I just set up three Macs with no Apple accounts, not needed for intended use. They all work fine. Apple accounts are only needed if access to Apple services is desired.
crancher··on Guinea worm on track to be 2nd eradicated human disease; only 10 cases in 2025
That you have the mental capacity/structures/language to form the thought should indicate the trajectory you're caught up within. It's disappointing that everything not's resolved during the blip you're you but even a moderately long view provides evidence for optimism.
crancher··on Antirender: remove the glossy shine on architectural renderings
I do something similar with my Curation Engine outputs. Interesting to get photorealistic outputs on a GPU via language pathing instead of photons.

crancher··on Reflections on Analyzing My Own Operation Logs
After reverse-engineering and documenting the Claude Code log format by analyzing 236,000+ events of my own operation
crancher··on Claude Skills
Seems like the exact same thing, from front page a few days ago: https://github.com/obra/superpowers/tree/main
crancher··on Claude Skills
It's interesting (to me) visualizing all of these techniques as efforts to replicate A* pathfinding through the model's vector space "maze" to find the desired outcome. The potential to "one shot" any request is plausible with the right context.
crancher··on OpenAI Codex CLI: Lightweight coding agent that runs in your terminal
What are your concerns?
crancher··on Show HN: USL - A Universal Scripting Language That Outputs to 111 Languages
Absolutely. Huge claim with zero examples is hmm.
crancher··on Why don't LLMs ask for calculators?
> Now, some might interject here and say we could, of course, train the LLM to ask for a calculator. However, that would not make them intelligent. Humans require no training at all for calculators, as they are such intuitive instruments.

Does the author really believe humans are born with an innate knowledge of calculators and their use?

crancher··on Ask HN: Is anyone working at least 4 hours daily on an Apple Vision Pro?
Yes, on WebXR and Unity-based “fully immersive” projects. Usually 8-10 hours a day, though not straight through.
crancher··on Depth Pro: Sharp monocular metric depth in less than a second
I’m guessing this is the tool behind the Vision Pro’s Photos.app’s 2D-to-Spatial feature which produces excellent results. It truly improves most photos significantly.
crancher··on Tandem OLED is OLED's latest weapon in holding off MicroLED, QDEL
Using it in a dark room is weird at times. The pure blacks create the strange illusion of holding something lit that you cannot see.
crancher··on DevHub.app – Developer Utilities for macOS
Please elaborate.
crancher··on The future of Deep Learning frameworks
All blanket statements are false.
crancher··on Transcribro: On-device Accurate Speech-to-text
Accrescent hype is comically overdone.
crancher··on Apple announces new accessibility features, including eye tracking
Well then it's both?
crancher··on U.S. National Park Service API
Couldn't get it to show up in search but the link works, thanks again.
