cramjabsyn··on Ask HN: What Next After Ubuntu?

cramjabsyn··on Low THD PWM audio amp, DIY friendly
It sounds like what you want is a dedicated class D power amp section and fully digitized dac/preamp section.

I think you’ll have more success focusing on them as separate components as the power amp will always be in the analog domain

cramjabsyn··on Low THD PWM audio amp, DIY friendly
I’m a huge fan of class D amps, although usually on the cheap end of the spectrum.

Recently I purchased a “fosi audio” (brand names seem to rotate) stereo amp with bluetooth. It’s about the size of a raspberry pi.

It is plenty powerful to drive a pair of bookshelf speakers, sounds good, and connects to a turntable and bluetooth source at the same time.

$25 on ebay. Really hard to beat for the price and size

cramjabsyn··on I'm shadow banned by DuckDuckGo and Bing
It’s not a shadow ban if you can easily see that you’ve been banned.

The point of a shadow ban is for the banned user to not notice.

This sounds like a regular old ban/blocklist.

cramjabsyn··on Write admin tools from day one (2022)
> They are also in itself documentation

No, your in house scripts are not documentation, because they provide little context or rationale. In many cases they make the system more opaque by masking fundamental admin actions inside poorly commented wrappers.

There is no substitute for well written documentation

cramjabsyn··on Manage like an engineer
Something that takes 30 seconds to say takes 30 seconds to forget.

Writing ensures that

  a) it was important enough to spend time writing out
  b) the ask has been thought through and can be communicated in clear terms (and via written clarifying questions)
  c) the conversation can scale beyond half duplex in the same space and timezone
  d) there is a log of the ask, questions, responses, etc. for posterity
cramjabsyn··on Manage like an engineer
Thats all fine and good, but the context needs to be communicated async first.

This allows everyone to investigate, think, prepare questions and organize ideas/approaches.

Without that sync time is wasted explaining the basic premise

cramjabsyn··on Be where your business is

cramjabsyn··on Optimal hydration may slow down the aging process in humans
I like to reuse large containers from orange juice and ice tea as water bottles.

I’ll keep several around the house, so I’ll always have a large bottle of filtered water right next to me.

For me it helps with staying hydrated, and I like to think that reusing these bottles is better than recycling them right away.

Also as a cheap skate the notion of a $30+ bottle is silly

cramjabsyn··on Worst interview questions for software developers
Please add fizzbuzz and other stupid code trivia to the list.

If you want to see how a developer really works, ask them to submit a patch, participate in a real code review and review their public facing code contributions.

cramjabsyn··on I Will Write More
I’m growing more and more jaded by the notion that a new calendar year should involve some sort of personal reinvention.

If you wanted to do that, you’d be doing it already. So quit making promises and just do the thing, or don’t.

Just enjoy where you are in life and focus on whats most important now.

cramjabsyn··on Saying “sup” with `net send`
A classic at my high school was taking a screen shot of the desktop with icons, setting it as the desktop background, then hiding all the desktop icons.

Bonus points if you could get the teachers machine

cramjabsyn··on German car makers putting out of the self driving AI-race
> there are roads in my town where unless someone waits and yields to let someone on a side street turn onto or cross the main road, the person on the side street is literally going to be stuck until rush hour is over.

It’s my view that this is a failure in road design, and leaving it up to drivers to make up their own rules is dangerous.

Understood this is the status quo, but I wish more would be done to address these types of situations because they cause stress and accidents

cramjabsyn··on German car makers putting out of the self driving AI-race
I wish this was a formal/enforced rule. I do it too (leave a reasonable gap ahead of me) it helps a lot in traffic
cramjabsyn··on German car makers putting out of the self driving AI-race
Honestly drivers who stop in traffic or hold up intersections to make hand gestures and yield their right of way should be shunned and ticketed.

This is a social norm of driving today that makes little sense. It’s actually quite dangerous to stop in the middle of traffic and wave at someone. And the person waving usually acts in an impatient and unpredictable way. They will give you about 5 seconds to lurch into the road before they get irritated and drive on. Or they could easily commit insurance fraud by luring you into an accident that appears to be your fault.

If all followed the rules of the road it’d be a lot safer and also slightly easier to automate

cramjabsyn··on Ask HN: Host a website from a living room in 2022?
Get a cheap USFF (ultra small form factor) PC. Its essentially laptop components in a small headless box. For the going price of a rpi 4 you could have an i5 or i7 with 8-16G ram and a proper SSD

Time for a mass exodus. Seriously.

Anyone sticking around is hanging on to what they had in the old system.

That’s dead and gone. its time to move on.
