craftinator··on The Assange case is collapsing but it remains a travesty of justice
Yes, false media can be generated, much like 100 years ago when you could sign a fake signature or misquote someone in a newspaper. No idea is new, just new applications of the idea.

Luckily, we all have brains, and can use them to understand things from first principles. Listening to other people thoughts about what you should be doing is generally stupid. They aren't you, and they have themselves to look after.

Also, no freaking idea why you tangented from vaccines, to taxes, to fake media generation, but unless you pick a topic we are done here.

craftinator··on The Assange case is collapsing but it remains a travesty of justice
As far as I'm concerned, no one is supposed to do anything. You do what you decide is best. Hunches and assumptions sound like a bad way to decide on such an important course of action. Instead, if I were you, I'd do a combination of research and choosing someone to listen to that you think is both trustworthy and has spent a long time learning about vaccines. Maybe someone who's got a PhD in molecular biology and has written extensively on the subject.

Do your own research, and trust that person to understand the things that would take too long for you to learn, then make your choice.

I would never let the government do my thinking for me, for free or for pay. They aren't good at it.

craftinator··on Sheriff’s Office letter targets residents for ‘increased accountability’
"The Sheriff’s Office acknowledged that they want these “problem people” gone. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco, the architect of the program, boasted that the goal was to predict which residents are likely to commit crimes and then “take them out.” In the words of a former Pasco County deputy, they were under orders to “[m]ake their lives miserable until they move or sue.”

Your anecdote is not data. Please present data to back up your argument.
craftinator··on Sheriff’s Office letter targets residents for ‘increased accountability’
I think it's become obvious who the actual criminals are here.
craftinator··on The Assange case is collapsing but it remains a travesty of justice
If "trusting the government" is the reason you are taking a vaccine, you don't know enough about history, current events, or medicine. Any government, as a whole, is stupid and slow. But even stupid institutions can get things right when they are obvious enough. When they do, it doesn't mean you should start trusting them.

Simple understandings of biology and medicine should inform you that taking a vaccine to the worst pandemic in living memory is the right course of action.

craftinator··on A Victoria man has gone two decades without money
> Philosophy helps question and understand, it hasn't historically been a driver of change.

You kind of put your foot in it with this comment. Societal change, for the most part, directly follows questioning and understanding.

craftinator··on A Victoria man has gone two decades without money
> Dude, you're a narcissist. You're free to change your values over time but no one else is? Maybe the next person squatting in your town square is a former you.

This was exactly what was going through my head while reading their post. That, or that they are making up a BS backstory to gain some sort of credibility, but there is no point in that sort of speculating.

craftinator··on Microsoft confirms taskbar in Windows 11 no longer supports drag and drop
Currently the only reason I use windows at all is because Fusion 360 only runs on windows. As soon as I find a seamless workaround, I can finally dump it completely. Pretty excited about that!
craftinator··on Catholic priest quits after “anonymized” data revealed alleged use of Grindr
You really seem to be popping up all over this thread with personal attacks on strangers.

This priest is paid through donations from believers, yet actively engaged in behaviors that are abhorrent to the church. If nothing else, it's immoral, and he should have removed himself from that role long ago

craftinator··on Is GitHub Copilot a blessing, or a curse?
> And so will the media decrying shit like "Is this the end of developers?!?"

Yeah, CoPilot already replaced my job. I used to be the office copypasta, going around to my coworkers desk all day long to fix their problems by googling them, then pasting in the first snippet to pop up. It didn't matter if the language matched or not, it was more the thought that counted. Now I've had to get a job as a loan rejection stamper at my local bank. It's not nearly as fun or exciting, but at least my effort makes a difference now. A big difference.

craftinator··on Nvidia Shield TV Owners Are Pissed About the Banner Ads in Android TV
Honestly, why do people buy shit like this when you can just hook a raspberry pi to your tv and stream through that? I'm asking a real question here, I simply can't understand what makes this a desirable thing for anyone.
craftinator··on Don’t Let Police Arm Autonomous or Remote-Controlled Robots and Drones
I'll second this. In the military (or at least in the Marine Corps, from my experience), the person to your left and right is not only there to help you, but to hold you accountable too. It's started early in training that you don't "let your buddy off the hook", you f** them up if they do something stupid. The goal is to uncover all the dirt and get it cleaned up, not to hide it. And your buddy will testify against you, because they know it's the right thing to do, and you'll spend years in the brigg. It's a hard culture, but it's built to be self-filtering, self-cleaning. That's where the idea of honor comes from.

From everything that I've witnessed and heard, police culture is the polar opposite. You "do favors", "hook each other up", and "overlook mistakes". All of this breeds the bacteria, rather than killing it off.

craftinator··on Illinois first state to tell police they can't lie to minors in interrogations
> Every police force has its share of assholes too

Due to the nature of the job, and the perks and impunity of it in the US, it actually self selects for assholes. The military does as well, to a much lesser extent. There were some days when I went to bed thinking, "everyone I talked to today was a self important asshole."

craftinator··on Soldiers speak out about being blocked from repairing equipment by contractors
There are a few reasons that military tech turns out this way. The largest I've seen is that the military doesn't actually make any money with it's tech. From a classic business perspective, it's just an end user. There isn't a monetary incentive to remake entire systems to work well together.

Another big reason for the strange and overbearing standards is that there are so many different classified legacy systems that need to function, and no one is really allowed to alter, that newer systems need to be backwards compatible to work with them.

craftinator··on Full-time minimum wage workers can't afford rent anywhere in the US
> When I think of minimum wage, I think motel janitorial

I find this really funny having been a hotel janitor. It paid 1.5x minimum wage, but that was offset by them wanting not only a hardworking janitor, but also a skilled handyman who could also do plumbing, fix beds and railing, etc. I've witnessed this at several other jobs as well, where they hire someone for a low paying job, then expect them to use all the skills they have at the same pay rate as what they were hired for.

craftinator··on Full-time minimum wage workers can't afford rent anywhere in the US
Ah I'm sorry, I misinterpreted your comment, there are some really nasty thoughts being submitted in this thread and approached yours that way. I apologize.
craftinator··on Full-time minimum wage workers can't afford rent anywhere in the US
> Then I stopped relying on being lucky

Oh no, you still rely on being lucky. Especially if you went from being very poor to having a college degree, so many things completely outside of your control must have gone in your favor for that to happen. That is the definition of luck.

> You say I'm lucky... I say you're entitled.

Since you know nothing about me, I'm assuming you are lashing out here because I touched on a sensitive area for you. Maybe rocked your sense of being solely responsible for all of the good things that you've been fortunate to have?

> Funny thing is we're both correct

No. I really don't have any sense of entitlement. You, however, are incredibly lucky, you've really been in the top 1% for statistics on poverty. Remember to pay it forward.

craftinator··on Matthew Green:I’ve never seen so many broken things in one simple piece of code
> This is a very bad article even if it’s from someone reputable because they don’t explain why not at each step.

Based on the context and how it's written, I get the feeling he never intended it to be a full fledged article, just some tweets, then it grew organically from there. This was never an instructional piece of work.

> Americans rank among the highest in living space per Capita, so we spend emit a lot of CO2 heating and cooling spaces that we're not even inside.

Well, I've known quite a few lower class, paycheck to paycheck families, and they would NEVER run an AC or heater without someone in the room. Poor people aren't the reason all that CO2 is being emitted, it's the people with multiple houses.

craftinator··on Full-time minimum wage workers can't afford rent anywhere in the US
> Know what I did? That college degree I mentioned... I got a skill in demand and became more than a burger flipper and dish washer.

You got lucky. Like really, statistically, you were incredibly lucky. Good genetics, lack of disabilities dire enough to stop you from working, no medical emergencies serious enough to put you in permanent debt, and obviously received some decently schooling on the government's dime as a child if you just "got a skill in demand" and a "college degree". Yes, the hard work helped to captalize on all of the good luck you had, but it didn't create the circumstances that allowed you to succeed. So if your argument is "why should these people who are less fortunate than me be allowed to live decently?", the response should be "you should be that person living in squalor, but you lucked out".

craftinator··on Plenty of exercise can be enough to offset the negative impacts of poor sleep
Interesting anecdote:

At Marine Corps boot camp, and subsequently combat training, not enough sleep and plenty of exercise is the norm. I averaged somewhere around 5 hours a night, but never more than 7, and many times somewhere between 3 and 0. There wasn't a lot of pure exercise, but constant activity based exercise, and a lot of stress based exercise. I was mid 20s when I went through it, and had a couple of guys with me who had to get age waivers (30+). We all agreed it was the most alert we'd ever felt, and that when we slept, we slept hard and felt extremely well rested, even when sleeping on hard ground.

Since exiting I spent many years feeling lethargic and burnt out from work, until I started training for a marathon. Now I have that same feeling, that it doesn't matter how much I sleep, and my body just feels more alive. Exercise, especially aerobic and cardio vascular, does wonders for your health, if you have time to do it right.

Actually, they both are correct. "Softwares" has a different and older connotation to it, but both are acceptable in English.

craftinator··on Towards a more Elvish vision for Technology
As someone who's done a bit of survivalism, I'd challenge you to go spend a few weeks in nature, living off the land. By the end, you'll be hoping that you can fix problems from the previous disaster before the next one strikes. Humans adapted quite a bit in order to survive, but a vast majority were killed by mother earth long before their natural deaths.
craftinator··on A completely unoptimized terminal renderer that runs at several thousand FPS
There are thousands of FPS being pushed to the frame buffer, where they could be displayed at that rate with the right hardware (Although I'm not sure there are display technologies that could update that quickly...). Another way of looking at it is that the FPS rate is now display hardware bound, rather than software bound.
craftinator··on Show HN: Hetchr, a Developer's Homepage
I usually assume landing pages are made for corporate sales, and skip them, going straight to the docs or other pages. I agree with your comment; there needs to be more meat here (though it seems like the public facing website is probably still in a beta phase).

Advice for the OP: I used to make professional briefings for the military. The single most important part of any slideshow or document was the WIFM page - the Why It F**ing Matters page (I kid you not, that acronym was what everyone used). It gave a no-fluff, terse summary of why the product was relevant to the audience, often including a 3 sentence overview of the briefing, and one paragraph explaining what they should take away from it. Think of it like a very terse abstract, using the plainest language possible, very much like what you wrote above. For the people who need to know what a thing is, it's a godsend that keeps them from instantly moving on.
