cracker_jacks··on Opera adds native support for blockchain domain names
> no attacks are possible

I think this just shifts the responsibility and point of attack onto the owner (which is true for all decentralized crypto). An attack is still possible and worse yet, it is completely irreversible.

That said, the option of taking personal custody and responsibility is important and I think it should always be an option.

cracker_jacks··on AMD Reports Q1 2021 Earnings
> Meanwhile AMD’s Enterprise, Embedded, and Semi-Custom segment has seen an explosion of growth of its own over the past year, thanks to the launch of AMD’s third-gen EPYC (Milan) processors, as well as the 9th generation consoles.

Surprised to see enterprise switching over this quickly from Intel to AMD. How much infrastructure needs to get swapped out when making this switch?

cracker_jacks··on Nvidia Unveils Grace: A High-Performance Arm CPU for Use in Big AI Systems
"640K ought to be enough for anybody."
cracker_jacks··on Why don't companies pay 50x engineers 50x?
People are overcomplicating this. It's simply because there is no market to create price discovery. Most of your price is established the day you start, well before you've proven yourself to be a '50x engineer'. And no one outside the org knows you're a '50x engineer', so there's no competition trying to hire you away. I am surprised the author of this article missed this despite making the analogy to sports athletes who have constant price discovery because their stats/accomplishments are public. It is in the company's advantage to prevent this price discovery and ideally not have a '50x engineer' be aware of how financially significant their contribution is, definitely not make competitors aware.
cracker_jacks··on Instacart mulls direct listing in snub to IPOs
> The NYSE now offers companies the option to raise money in a direct listing after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved it in December.

Doesn't the new NYSE listing format 'stick it to wall st' or at least institutions that get early access to IPOs?

cracker_jacks··on Accounts with GAN Faces Attack Belgium over 5G Restrictions
You have to wonder if Twitter has any incentive to actually block these sorts of attacks. Especially as the attacks get better and harder to detect, the less it impacts Twitter's bottom line.
cracker_jacks··on Viral effects are not network effects
"So if you have to choose between viral effects and network effects, choose network effects."

Can anyone give an example of choosing between the two?

Viral effects and network effects seem like complementary things.

cracker_jacks··on Twitter faces FTC probe, likely fine over use of phone numbers for ads
> Twitter estimates the "range of probable loss" it faces in the probe is between $150 million and $250 million

That's close to 10% of Twitter's annual revenue. How do the likes of Google and Facebook get away with fines <1% of annual revenue? This seems disproportionate. I am not taking a position on whether it should be higher or lower, just that it appears unbalanced.

cracker_jacks··on Higher Ed: Enough Already
The quality issue will have to be addressed either way as an outcome of the current pandemic. Previously, there was no pressure to solve these accessibility issues because it was not necessary for the survival of the institution. In fact, the quote I mention shows that it better serves the institution to have exclusivity to improve branding.

Now with the pandemic, an institution's survival depends on this accessibility. And the bonus is that solution to this issue can greatly increase the accessibility to many more.

cracker_jacks··on Higher Ed: Enough Already
Professor Galloway also said:

--- We get a lot of ego gratification every time our deans stand up in front of the faculty and say, “This year, we didn’t reject 85 percent of applicants; we rejected 87 percent!,” [...] That is tantamount to the head of a homeless shelter bragging about turning away nine of ten people who showed up last night. ---

There's an opportunity here to scale education from institutions all over the world to a level never possible before. Well...it was possible for many years. But the incentives for the institutions commit to it never appeared until now.

cracker_jacks··on Blackballed by PayPal, Sci-Hub switches to Bitcoin
If there was ever a noble application of the decentralized, uncensorable technologies ideas bourne out of the crypto community, this would be it.
cracker_jacks··on A mysterious company’s Covid-19 papers in top medical journals may be unraveling
The preprint model has actually been wildly successful for many communities (https://arxiv.org/, https://www.biorxiv.org/). I don't think anyone is arguing against peer review, but the idea of peer review and an established journal is being conflated. If anything, publishing established journals can create a level of implied authority that reduces much need scrutiny.
cracker_jacks··on A mysterious company’s Covid-19 papers in top medical journals may be unraveling
Is there a statistical demonstration of the effectiveness of established journals? It seems like you would have to do some form of counterfactual study to prove/disprove this. As far as I know, the argument of the effectiveness of journals only stems from the survivorship bias (e.g. all things considered research until recently has been published by journals).
cracker_jacks··on With remote work plan, Facebook dashes hopes of paycheck arbitrage
Is there any transparency on how "a moderation downweight" works? It sounds like a useful feature, but what does it exactly do, and is there a public log for these types of things.
cracker_jacks··on Magic Leap has apparently raised another $350M
Magic Leap has already signed over its patents to JP Morgan back in Nov 2019. Are those still acquirable assets in the event of an acquisition?
cracker_jacks··on Drastic makeover looms for S&P 500
Companies leave the index when they fall below a certain market cap. Companies enter the index when they are above a certain market cap. That is literally the definition of buying high and selling low.
cracker_jacks··on Drastic makeover looms for S&P 500
I wonder how buying high and selling low (the strategy of S&P 500 holders) will work out in this new COVID era.
cracker_jacks··on Justice Department, states likely to bring antitrust lawsuits against Google
Regardless of any one's opinion about this being right or wrong, good or bad, Google has spent enormous resources preparing for this moment. From lobbying efforts to the Alphabet restructuring, Google has been acutely aware of this possibility years ago.

This will not be an easy case for the states.

cracker_jacks··on Lyft cuts internship salaries by 50%
Picking up pennies in front of a steamroller...

Does it make sense to cut the salaries of the lowest-paid, zero equity groups? The same group of people you'll be competing to hire from when they graduate.

cracker_jacks··on Lyft lays off 17% of workforce, furloughs hundreds more
Won't this create more share dilution in the short term? Don't layoffs trigger options/RSUs to be executed some time window after the layoff?
cracker_jacks··on A List of Colleges’ Plans for Reopening in the Fall
Many college towns and rental properties relying on student income will be devastated.
cracker_jacks··on Google inserts links to its Duo video chat app when users text about Zoom
The problem with these types of arguments with soft algorithms like machine learning is that the answer probably lies somewhere in between in the most literal way (it has non-zero influence from many input features). Accepting this ambiguity is where companies like Google/FB can get a free pass by blaming the automated algorithm.

You could even create intentional situations where you know how the algorithm will behave because you know the data you are training on but still have the option to chalk up mistakes to 'accidental'.

cracker_jacks··on Forecasting s-curves is hard
> the length of that interval is bound by the ratio of the error in the data over the derivative with respect the parameter

This is interesting! Could you expand on this a bit? Why is the length of the interval bound by the ratio of the data error over the derivative?

cracker_jacks··on Zoom Call with Israelis Lands a Gaza Peace Activist in Jail
Zoom townhalls with people of differing opinions and cultures is a brilliant idea.
cracker_jacks··on Airbnb Paying More Than 10% Interest on $1B Financing Announced Monday
I agree this is odd. Given their business, what Airbnb needs 12000+ employees for is beyond me.
cracker_jacks··on Airbnb Paying More Than 10% Interest on $1B Financing Announced Monday
This is not correct. Apple has an inventory, stores, employees in those stores, etc. Likewise, for your other examples, these companies have to hold things on their books like hotel staff, lease payments, building maintenance, etc regardless of demand.

Airbnb is different. When demand drops, their costs directly drop as well since they don't pay hosts for stays that did not happen.

cracker_jacks··on Taiwan’s government bars its agencies from using Zoom over security concerns
