cptroot··on [dead]
This could use a [2014] tag, even as the conclusion is evergreen.
cptroot··on Best aspects of C
I think most "Programming 101" classes _have_ ditched C. I haven't heard of any current intro classes being taught in C.
cptroot··on The pandemic has eroded democracy and respect for human rights
> but that's a nonstarter for some reason

Yes, welcome to the nash equilibrium of polarized first past the post politics.

cptroot··on The pandemic has eroded democracy and respect for human rights
I would say that, at least in current US politics, it's more like a tyranny of the minority, abusing the system to increase the relative disparity of power.
cptroot··on Content moderation at scale is impossible to do well (2019)
That only really works if it can hide harrassment from you automatically
cptroot··on Exploiting Android Messengers with WebRTC
Worth noting that several of the bugs this exploit depends on were fixed earlier this year.
cptroot··on First Impressions of Rust
I think python also takes the approach where strings must be valid unicode. Both Rust and Python use their String types to represent valid unicode, and something else ([] and byte strings, respectively) to represent other encodings and invalid unicode.
cptroot··on What is 5D chess?
Happy to see this finally getting some traction on HN. I finally finished all of the puzzles a couple of days ago and I'm confident I'm going to file this one under the same file as Go: Fun to play, but even better to watch more skilled players analyze.
cptroot··on Bjarne Stroustrup Weighs in on Distributed Systems, Type Safety and Rust
My dude, we get it, you like your IDEs. You don't have to mention it in every comment thread.

If you find Visual Studio and CLion to be your desired work environments, both of them have support for Rust code via extensions. No it won't be as perfect as what you're used to, but it will be more than sufficient for most people.

cptroot··on Bjarne Stroustrup Weighs in on Distributed Systems, Type Safety and Rust
It's important to remember that C++ doesn't define an ABI, so you'd have to focus on specific compilers' ABIs.
cptroot··on Red Hat and CentOS systems aren’t booting due to BootHole patches
"Via Standard Interface" I don't think you can gloss over the differences between say DirectX and Metal that easily. Maybe you're arguing they should be gotten rid of, but I think that's rather pie in the sky.
cptroot··on Why are CEOs failing software engineers?
Just a note: it sounds like you're conflating "artistically" and "technically" in the phrase

[...] can make something that artistically is miles beyond Steamboat Mickey and Snow White.
Just because someone can make things that look better doesn't mean that they're better art, especially as that's almost entirely subjective.
cptroot··on Riot is now Element
Because Riot means Riot Games to a substantial portion of the internet.
cptroot··on Writing a winning 4K intro in Rust
Debug and release builds probably call slightly different sets of methods, so they might end up with slightly different heaps. That might be enough to cause a difference in offset between the builds.
cptroot··on Markets, Rent and WFH
I mean, doesn't California tax you even if you live somewhere else but work in California?
cptroot··on Microsoft: Rust Is the Industry’s ‘Best Chance’ at Safe Systems Programming
Given the degree of changes required in some codebases, I think some teams would rather treat it as a rewrite job.

Even moving large enterprise codebases from python 2 to python 3 is taking so long they had to push that deadline back years. Given the distance you'd have to cross to push an older C++ codebase to something with similar guarantees as Rust, I don't know if any company would voluntarily cross that gap.

cptroot··on What is interesting about Factorio
Note that the coal arm (Burner Inserter) will feed itself if it can.
cptroot··on What is interesting about Factorio
You could try the "Brave New World" scenario. In it you don't have a body, just robot friends.
cptroot··on What is interesting about Factorio
On the other side of a list of small mods, here's some cool modpacks I've enjoyed:

- Space Exploration (go to space!)

- Industrial Revolution (intermediates galore!)

- SeaBlock (Start from nothing!)

cptroot··on What is interesting about Factorio
A notable exception to this is uranium and modded Factorio. In particular, Angel's Petrochem has a bunch of those loops. If you're interested in trying it I recommend Factorio SeaBlock.
cptroot··on What is interesting about Factorio
The factory must grow
cptroot··on A Message About Vanguard From Our Security and Privacy Teams
To be clear, that's not because there are no cheaters. They've just finally implemented a behavior score and shadowbanned suspected cheaters and toxic players that way, with some help from the player- trained ML mentioned upthread.
cptroot··on Open UI
I regret to inform you that SOAP's death has been limited to open source. Enterprise continues to eat it up.
cptroot··on Log-log plot of new vs. total Covid-19 cases by country
There's a nice video about this on the minutephysics channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54XLXg4fYsc
cptroot··on Perpetual Debt in the Silicon Savannah
It's worth noting that these are predatory lending apps, not microfinance loans from places like Kiva [0].

cptroot··on Machine learning primitives in rustc (2018)
This could use a (2018) in the title. The original discussion was started Dec 2017, and the last comment was made Jan 2018. The recent change was the discussion getting locked in Mar of this year.
cptroot··on Parsing JSON Is a Minefield (2018)
Have you ever used serde-json[0]?

cptroot··on Economists’ Faith in Markets Broke America
It's worth noting that a significant number of mortgages were made without federal backing[1]. Any conception of the financial crash has to deal with the way that unregulated investment drove itself to new heights looking for better ways to invest money.

cptroot··on Professional Decline Comes Sooner Than People Think
The title has been changed from the original. The original title is "Your Professional Decline Is Coming (Much) Sooner Than You Think"
cptroot··on How to Build a Universe That Doesn't Fall Apart Two Days Later (1978)
According to archive.org this piece has been around since at least 2017. Not sure if it was written before then though.
