cozzyd··on MongoDB CEO resigns to join Meta
needs more sharding.
cozzyd··on What is the size of Yemen? (2024)
Well, this is a pretty perfect usecase for AI (although it's also easy to just get shapefiles from NE and do it yourself, obviously).

Interestingly all of UAE, Yemen and Saudi Arabia have significant discrepancies between the World Factbook and their shapefiles (in every case overestimating), probably all related to not having had a demarcated border in the Rub Al Khali.

All of ChatGPT is built on stealing, why would this be any different?

And worse for posterity, Python
cozzyd··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
Write it in C or Fortran.
cozzyd··on VSCode's SSH Agent Is Bananas (2025)
It also fills up the hard drives on shared server, where each user up to 5 GB of vscode nonsense.

Also, I realized that students are likely to use vscode to connect to embedded Linux machines and fill up their emmcs (and RAM), so I came up with a partial solution for our experiment's yocto image (https://github.com/RNO-G/meta-rno-g/blob/main/recipes-suppor...) , but a more general solution would be nice. Probably better to just not allow any node process to run via LSM.

cozzyd··on Europe's "Less" Is Doing More Than Anyone Gives It Credit For
Yes, a lot of obvious tells.
cozzyd··on Starlink Signal Leakage Threatens Radio Astronomy's Most Critical Frequencies
I bet the 137 isn't though since that's a common satellite downlink band. Swarm who they acquired used that
cozzyd··on Cherenkov Radiation
The photons don't slow down. It's the phase velocity that slows down because the electrons in the medium rearrange themselves in the presence of electromagnetic radiation, causing interference reducing the phase velocity of a wave. This is why the dielectric constant is related to the polarizability of a medium.

It's more about how fast communication can happen within the medium. The Cerenkov radiation happens because electrons can't "find out" about the charged particle coming through, creating a shock, similar to a sonic blast or the wake of a boat.

Hopefully I got this more or less right... I build detectors to look for Askarayan emission (a related phenomenon in the radio) but I'm definitely not a theorist :).

cozzyd··on Starlink Signal Leakage Threatens Radio Astronomy's Most Critical Frequencies
Just wait until wireless networks on the moon ruin that too.
cozzyd··on Starlink Signal Leakage Threatens Radio Astronomy's Most Critical Frequencies
These are either incidental or unauthorized transmissions. Not the Ku band downlink to terminals.
cozzyd··on Ask HN: Are others seeing Google's reCAPTCHA rejecting Firefox users?
Yes, a yubikey works for when I really need it, but it's enough friction to take out out and plug in that it's just annoying enough.
cozzyd··on Ask HN: Are others seeing Google's reCAPTCHA rejecting Firefox users?
But passkeys are not supported natively (i.e. without a USB key or other shenanigans) by Firefox on Linux, as there is no place to store them. I do have a USB key, but it's annoying enough that I don't like passkeys if I can avoid them (instead using long randomly-generated passwords by Firefox's builtin-in password manager).

Maybe Lennart needs to write systemd-passkeyd .

cozzyd··on Tao: Open math problems being non-renewably mined by AI

It was considered at the least a sin to reveal that sqrt(2) was irrational to those outside Pythagoras circle
perhaps a 2 sin 45?
cozzyd··on Asahi Linux on M3
Don't they ship a propetietary clang variant with weirdass version numbers? That was true at least at some point. Fortunately most Mac users on my experiments have given up attempting to compile any code in their Macs after SIP etc made it too annoying so rarely have to support them anymore.

cozzyd··on It took a year to ship WebAssembly in Anubis

cozzyd··on Your intellectual fly is open when you use an LLM to author a post (2025)
For instructions you really care about, yes of course you review the assembly output! Usually when you're doing SIMD or want to check atomics are doing what you expect.
cozzyd··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
that's FPGA firmware isn't it?

cozzyd··on “It works better in the app”
yeah, but in practice it used to be easier to type in the search bar and then click the maps tab...
cozzyd··on “It works better in the app”
I'm annoyed by a different thing ... It used to be when you searched for something, maps would always be a tab for results. Now it doesn't seem to be anymore...

cozzyd··on Tiny satellite will use the dark side of the Moon as a shield
RFSoCs seem like extreme overkill for this frequency range, though since Xiphos makes a space-grade one, it's not so unreasonable I guess.

Alas, I'm working on a competing project that I won't go into detail about :).

cozzyd··on GIMP Development Update
json's only advantage is it's easier to write by hand, but that's not really a consideration here. XML has schema support and much more tooling available.
cozzyd··on GPS and the Lost Art of Getting Lost
right but, suppose you want to stop for lunch in ~half an hour, and pick a decent restaurant that's not out of the way. I don't know if e.g. google maps can do that (maybe it can... like I said, I rarely drive).
cozzyd··on GPS and the Lost Art of Getting Lost
I bike on lower Randolph all the time. On lower lower Wacker only if you count crossing it between the Riverwalk and Lakeshore East Park.
cozzyd··on GPS and the Lost Art of Getting Lost
It's hilarious how many people avoid lower Wacker drive in Chicago because they're so dependent on gps.

I don't have a car so I don't drive often, but I can't stand gps directions when I do, constantly changing the route and micro optimizing. I just look at the map and try to remember it. (Admittedly, having a map in a car is useful, even if I don't like the directions).

A related atrophied skill is the inability for many people to find a place to stop for lunch on the route, since they only understand turn by then directions, not the map.
