cowvin··on YouTube suspends Rand Paul over a video disputing the effectiveness of masks
I think you're confusing Rand Paul with his father Ron Paul. Ron Paul was a very politically consistent libertarian. Rand Paul, not so much.

cowvin··on Anti-Vaxxers Got Fooled by Fake ‘Snitch on Your Unvaccinated Friends’ Site
No, not a governor, a Republican candidate for governor. From the article:

"Not only that, the website was designed and built by David Bramante, a realtor and a Republican candidate running for governor in California’s recall election, who says the website was simply a piece of “political satire” designed to highlight what he views as unconstitutional vaccine mandates."

Yes, the purpose is to raise fear that people will be forced to get vaccinated, etc. It's just another attempt to politicize vaccination.

cowvin··on What if Bitcoin went to zero?
that's not really a "fall." that's normal inflation. a small amount of inflation is desirable because it incentivizes people to use their money rather than sit on it and let it accumulate value.

coincidentally that's actually a big problem with bitcoin... it's a deflationary currency so all the wealth is accumulating in the hands of the early adopters who are just sitting on it. this hinders its adoption since people are incentivized to not spend it.

cowvin··on Colorado web designer who refused to make same-sex wedding websites loses appeal
It's quite interesting because conservatives in the U.S. are simultaneously attempting to compel tech companies to host content against their will but at the same time they are trying to argue that these cake / flower / website makers don't need to make content against their will.
cowvin··on What are your cost of living increases looking like this year?
Nope, just the usual raises in my company (2-4% ish). They did however give us a one time grant of some stock shares that will vest in a few years, though.
cowvin··on America’s Largest Health Care Union Vows to Fight Mandatory Covid-19 Vaccines
It was all politicized. That's all. Scientifically speaking, there is tons of evidence supporting the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine.
cowvin··on There Is No Good Reason You Should Have to Be a Citizen to Vote
You mean because they publish opinion pieces written by random people?
cowvin··on Building a vision of life without work (2015)
Yeah, he's also unwilling to admit that his early retirement failed despite having had to begin working again.

The goal of retirement is to have enough that you will be able to avoid working even if some things go wrong. Otherwise you're not ready to retire.

cowvin··on Building a vision of life without work (2015)
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'd be happy doing that for quite some time. I guess it might get old after a while, though, which is why I would probably do a semi-retirement bit for a while.
cowvin··on Building a vision of life without work (2015)
Yeah, my wife and I talk about reaching a sort of semi-retirement state where we can just make some small amount of money and not stress out about money anymore. That will keep us busy but we can take breaks any time we want to.
cowvin··on $100M xPrize for Carbon Removal
What we need is a cryptocurrency that is somehow mined by pulling carbon out of the atmosphere.
cowvin··on Three programmers got fired, including me, due to a single app crash
lol yeah, but then you're just dodging the next bullet.
cowvin··on Ask HN: You're 27 again. What would you do differently?
Hah I worked at a startup when I was younger and it was a terrible experience. The owners basically wanted to us to all work endless hours for their financial gain. They always had the excuse that they didn't have a lot of money but at the end they reaped all the financial rewards.

If you are thinking more of being one of the owners of a startup, that might be better advice. Also, don't exploit your employees if you go that route!

cowvin··on Passive radiative cooling below ambient airtemperature under direct sun (2014) [pdf]
I wonder the same thing. If you get a chance, try to test the various configurations!

I would suspect you will also see different results depending if you have multiple windows or just 1. For example, if you have more than 1 window and can seal the opening except the fan, then the fan will move x amount of air in or out and will have similar results.

Simply mixing the air inside the room seems like it's probably the least effective because it will result in very little heat exchange at the windows themselves. However, making the temperature within your house more even may make it more comfortable on the average inside your house.

cowvin··on Ask HN: 30 years old with no career
Most jobs aren't particularly lovable. That's why they pay you to do the work, right? Your expectations around work may be a little unrealistic. Ultimately, you work to earn money.

The thing is, because of supply and demand, you get paid more for work that is either undesirable or requires rare skills (or both).

Note that rare skills may be acquired through training or schooling, so if you have a rare skill you're interested in acquiring, you should go for it.

The trade you were apprenticing in sounds like it would have led to a career. It sounds like you quit, though?

cowvin··on Ask HN: Can I have successful career in software engineering starting at 40?
Well, you just have less time to develop your career as an actual programmer than you would if you started a bit younger. If you enjoy writing code, why not give it a shot? You will need to prove to potential employers that you can provide them useful work, though.
cowvin··on The internet eats up less energy than you might think
The government typically doesn't mandate companies set their prices to a certain level. Instead, they add taxes that then raise the price of the item. For example, there's already a gasoline tax.
cowvin··on Amazon Prime Day Is Dystopian
My family was a bit on the fence about the value of having Prime back when it was cheaper. Then when they jacked up the price, we just canceled it.

Prime doesn't really add enough value for my family. You can still qualify for free shipping when buying stuff on Amazon without it. Most of the other perks were simply not that valuable to us.

cowvin··on PNG files can be animated via network latency
I believe he's just taking advantage of how interlacing works in png to create this effect. As you load the higher resolution, the image changes drastically in this case.

cowvin··on South African Brothers Vanish, and So Does $3.6B in Bitcoin Exit Scam
I mean a currency that protects you from government intervention also protects criminals from law enforcement. They're just two sides of the same coin.

The first banks would have dealt mostly with physical money / gold, so it would be a lot harder to pull off this kind of fraud.

cowvin··on Tesla’s ‘Knight Rider’ Steering Yoke Is Getting Panned in Early Reviews
Haha, some Tesla owners I know have complained about the touch screen. It's not a big enough problem for them to get rid of the car, though.
cowvin··on Show HN: Influence, a Go-inspired 1-minute board game
Yep, same here. The animations are way too slow. For whatever reason it seems to wait like a second after you move to pulse influence. There's no reason it should wait.
cowvin··on Last remaining 1000+ user community channel seized by Freenode staff
the term "moderator" clearly suggests that they are there to moderate the conversation. otherwise they would be called "leaders."
cowvin··on Jeff Bezos Claimed $4k in Tax Credits for His Children
Yep, this is precisely why we need a wealth tax.
cowvin··on Ask HN: What have been the hardest work-related aspects of async/remote work?
I noticed that I'm a lot less aware of random things that go on in my company. It's amazing how much stuff I used to pick up by just overhearing people and random passing conversations.

Another obvious drawback is that my work requires me to use proprietary hardware. I can use it remotely, but it's just not nearly as efficient to do so.

cowvin··on Lab Leak Debacle Shows Why Banning 'Misinformation' Is a Terrible Idea
There's a difference between spreading the idea that it may have happened versus spreading the idea that it did happen without evidence.
cowvin··on Ten Kilograms of Chocolate (2020)
If you need an excuse to eat more chocolate.... I mean collect more data, you could try a swiss-style tournament next time. It will yield more match data for the weaker chocolates.
cowvin··on Citizen app sparked a $30k manhunt for the wrong guy
The line being crossed is that usually private citizens offer rewards for "information leading to the arrest" of someone. They don't put a bounty on actually arresting the guy because that's the job of the professional police departments.

And both of your questions regarding what if they get it wrong or right are quite interesting to think about.

cowvin··on LaMDA: Google's New Conversation Technology
People everywhere tend to talk about themselves a lot, in my experience. I'm not sure why you think it's only in California.

What do people talk about where you're originally from?

cowvin··on Bezos Calculator
Is there a reason you don't cover right-wing billionaires in your examples? For example the Koch brothers and Rupert Murdoch are extremely influential on politics.

In any case, money has always been able to buy political power. That's a big reason why wealth inequality leads to political instability.
