cowsandmilk··on StreetComplete on iOS is now in public beta
> you can't contribute map data that requires attribution to OSM

That’s not true.

cowsandmilk··on AWS says it can't restore some data from mideast facilities struck by Iran
1. This wasn’t a strike on a single data center, it was strikes on many data centers.

2. Since that interview, AWS has started selling versions of their storage that isn’t redundant. It is not surprising that when AWS sells non-redundant storage that some data is not recoverable.

cowsandmilk··on 'You Can See Everything' Review: Nathan Fielder's Doc About Elizabeth Holmes
She gave people medical test results that were incorrect. Say what you want about PE, the medical diagnostics firms they own provide accurate test results to patients.
cowsandmilk··on It took a year to ship WebAssembly in Anubis
100%, author lives in Canada and the phrasing has the British heritage of Canadian English.
cowsandmilk··on AWS Acquires DuckLabs
They do, they’re TPMs and PMs. If you’re a development team at Amazon stressing over MBRs, you’ve failed to give those people the tools to pull important metrics themselves.
cowsandmilk··on Stripe Clinches over $7B Deal to Buy AI Firm OpenRouter
Yeah, Amazon didn’t let its low margin retail business prevent them from taking high margins in AWS. I’m not sure why it is assumed Stripe would stay low margin.

cowsandmilk··on Semaglutide linked to 26% lower 5-year predicted dementia risk
> Which sort of affirms the mantra, "If you can't prove causation, try to prove correlation."

There’s already tons of correlation published for semaglutide lowering rates of dementia. This study is an effort at helping find the mechanism beyond the generally also known correlation that losing weight lowers rates of dementia.

cowsandmilk··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
> This is a Novo Nordisk-funded study focusing on predictive biomarkers rather than real-world dementia cases

You act like all this is hidden, but the title of the article and the list of authors makes this self-evident.

> Novo Nordisk's actual dedicated clinical trials for Alzheimer's completely failed to show that semaglutide stops cognitive decline

Sure, but the EVOKE studies were focused on something that could be sold as a product covered by insurance: semaglutide to those who had already developed Alzheimer’s. It is widely agreed the trial failed because it was a population already diagnosed with dementia. There’s lots of studies not funded by Novo that show semiglutatide has reduced the incidence of dementia in the diabetes population. Novo knows that running a general study on whether semaglutide reduces dementia in a non-diagnosed population is useless to their bottom line because insurance will never pay for everyone to take the drug.

cowsandmilk··on We replaced Redis with MySQL for inventory reservations and it scaled
There were woot offs 20 years ago. Flash sales are not some new scaling issue.
cowsandmilk··on Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't
I had an interesting internal debate the other day about whether farm fields were more natural than fields of solar panels. (Ignore fields that have both for now). To me, a tilled field that is being chemically fertilized and tilled is at this point just as far removed from the former native state.
cowsandmilk··on Wikimedia Foundation refuses union recognition, hires union-busting law firm
Both halves of the title are true statements.
cowsandmilk··on Show HN: Elevators
> If it was a camera, security issue

What security issue? Many hotel elevators already have cameras.

cowsandmilk··on Everyone should know SIMD
I always must ask, why isn’t your compiler doing this for you? I know they often aren’t because I’ve seen speed ups from writing SIMD or using the vector functions in MKL, but this is something I really think the compilers should do for us in the simple case.
cowsandmilk··on Zig Creator Calls Spade a Spade, Anthropic Blows Smoke
The bun team made no mention of compile times in their post. The author of this post points to other work by bun that was hardly making a big fuss. It was just a Twitter post about parallelizing some things to make builds faster.
cowsandmilk··on Delta flight hit by firework while landing at Midway Airport on Fourth of July
How is this relevant? No one shot at the plane.
cowsandmilk··on A way to exclude sensitive files issue still open for OpenAI Codex
If you’re already running codex as a different user to limit its file permissions, why would you add it to the docker group?
cowsandmilk··on A way to exclude sensitive files issue still open for OpenAI Codex
100% this. The idea that Codex should enforce this is putting the security boundary at the wrong layer. If you don’t want codes to access something, make it so it doesn’t have access.
cowsandmilk··on Elastic lays off 7% of employees
It’s been five years since they changed their license. Today’s layoffs cannot be blamed on AWS and GCP. It’s been years and they have differentiated products now.
cowsandmilk··on Caddy compatibility for zeroserve: 3x throughput and 70% lower latency
Why does jit compilation here scare you? eBPF has had a ton of research on how to limit its resource usage and how to sandbox it.
cowsandmilk··on Honda Civics and the Evil Valet
I’ve had my civic coupe valeted at hotels and wasn’t doing staying anywhere special. Business trip where I drove the 100 miles to Baltimore and stayed at the hotel my company put me up in. Also, I’ve had medical appointments places where they valeted your car for free.

I feel like having your car valeted was something special when I was a kid, but now it doesn’t really take something special.

cowsandmilk··on Anthropic requires 30 day data retention for Fable and Mythos
Why can’t they have trained the classifier on internal red teaming?
cowsandmilk··on A Farmer Donated Land to Turn into a Park. The City Is Building a Data Center
The zoning for that lot would allow a grocery store. Not being able to walk to the grocery store isn’t a zoning issue in this case.
cowsandmilk··on macOS Container Machines
Use this because docker has very problematic licensing on MacOS.
cowsandmilk··on Siri AI
I’m sorry, but the DMA is mandating Cambridge Analytica-type access to data. That whole scandal was people on Facebook granting a third party access to all the data they had access to. And Cambridge Analytica lied about how they were going to use it.

Facebook got roasted for this, but now the EU wants the same open data policy from every big tech company.

cowsandmilk··on APC–2 – A professional record cutter for producing original playback discs
> frequently opening boxes, but not constantly.

If you are frequently opening boxes, that spring-loaded mechanism is going to cause repetitive stress injuries. No competent workplace health and safety employee would approve it.

Also, if you are using a utility knife frequently, you likely have a depth you want to keep it. Say I’m installing carpeting. I want to set the razor at a depth for the shag of carpet I’m working on today and have my blade at that depth until I’m done. With a spring load, the only depth that can easily be set is fully out where I’m pushing it all the way. Any intermediate depths will result in me shaking back and forth trying to hold a constant intermediate pressure.

This is a utility knife for someone rich who uses it for the day’s amazons packages because they think using the blade from their scissors is beneath them.

cowsandmilk··on Show HN: Helios – what plug-in solar could generate for any address in Britain

The ordnance survey not being open data is a bad look though.
