cowsandmilk··on When Americana doesn't mean American
See also Japan being a stronghold of Ivy League fashion.

cowsandmilk··on Google Play sees 47% decline in apps since start of last year
The irony of your comment thinking the EU is going to fight this.

The DUNS number is the European Commission standard for business identification; the choice of D&B isn’t random, it literally came from EU requirements.

cowsandmilk··on Show HN: An MCP server for understanding AWS costs
How does this avoid liability for anything?
cowsandmilk··on Why did Windows 7 log on slower for months if you had a solid color background?
Eh, in a case like this, without the 30 second “assume loaded” timeout, the system would be forever stuck in the loading screen for those impacted by the bugs. Sometimes it is better for your users to be optimistic that the system did indeed load.
cowsandmilk··on Virginia passes law to enforce maximum vehicle speeds for repeat speeders
Over the 15 years from 2008-2023, fatality rate per 100 million VMT has largely been stable, maybe increased some. I think that qualifies as not having recent wins.
cowsandmilk··on Show HN: I built an AI that turns GitHub codebases into easy tutorials
you're going to trust the person who started the thread with no idea what happened to the company and then jumped to conclusions based on LinkedIn?
cowsandmilk··on Google Cloud Rapid Storage
I understand your belief that One Zone implies less expensive, but I’m staunchly in favor of them having it in the name so people know that their data is in a single AZ. The storage class succinctly summarizes faster with lower availability.
cowsandmilk··on Show HN: Nue – Apps lighter than a React button
> developers don't taking any time to optimize, lazy load, cache, minimize dependencies...

I built much more performant apps without lazy loading or caching when using html and a sprinkle of JS.

cowsandmilk··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
Not sure how that’s the fault of MacOS
cowsandmilk··on HTTP/3 is everywhere but nowhere
For those building on AWS with VPC per service and using PrivateLink for connections between services, the whole IP conflict problem just evaporates. Admittedly, you’re paying some premiums to Amazon for that convenience.
cowsandmilk··on Study finds 46 percent of U.S. counties have pharmacy deserts
Sure, but the point of Chapter 11 is to restructure so you can hopefully get back to operating profitably.
cowsandmilk··on Why do transit agencies keep falling for the hydrogen bus myth?
See https://alphastruxure.com/news-press-release/emtoc-microgrid... for an example of on-site hydrogen production.
cowsandmilk··on Richard Sutton and Andrew Barto Win 2024 Turing Award
> doesn't care if humans all die

His last slide literally says “best hope for a long-term future for humanity”. That’s literally the opposite of what you’re claiming.

cowsandmilk··on Succinct data structures
I’m sorry, but your comment mixes two different types of dictionaries. You talk about “official” meanings which would be a prescriptive dictionary telling you the way you are allowed to use a word. But the dictionaries that include “figuratively” in their definitions are clearly descriptive, presenting all the ways words are commonly used.

You can’t take a descriptive dictionary and then claim it is prescriptive.

cowsandmilk··on There Was a Texas Lottery Arbitrage
> I wasn't sure of the ethics of skewing the odds against your customers like this anyway.

This is interesting because I don’t think anyone would view the store as unethical for continuing to sell tickets from a roll when they know there have already been X winners from that role and therefore customer odds have gone down.

cowsandmilk··on Dozens of U.S. academics lose grants from Minerva Research Initiative
> Obama’s defense secretary

Obama wasn’t president in 2008, not sure why you are mentioning him.

cowsandmilk··on Dozens of U.S. academics lose grants from Minerva Research Initiative
That is one of the purposes of USAID, but that’s been defunded too.
cowsandmilk··on Geothermal power is a climate moon shot beneath our feet
Ground source heat pumps are generally considered to be “geothermal”.
cowsandmilk··on The FFT Strikes Back: An Efficient Alternative to Self-Attention
In the case of FFTs, no. Which is why I prefer the term Fourier space. I don’t like frequency domain because I frequently work with 3-D and 5–D FFTs while I’ve always felt frequency is connected to single dimension FFT.
cowsandmilk··on Hyperspace
> there aren't already dozens of great apps that dedupe.

Most of those delete rather than use the features of APFS.

cowsandmilk··on Why Ruby on Rails still matters
I can point to plenty of companies that have rewritten products at scale. That said, specifically relevant to the article, I believe Shopify and GitHub continue to run Ruby on Rails.
cowsandmilk··on Hk, a new Git hook manager
The big difference with Makefiles is that git hooks can’t be committed to the repo. Hook managers allow hooks to be shared and updated across a team.
cowsandmilk··on Kindle is removing download and transfer option on Feb 26th
Kobo is owned by Rakuten who used to own Overdrive/Libby.
cowsandmilk··on “A calculator app? Anyone could make that”
Based on the thread, you can build it from the source code and telemetry won’t be enabled…
cowsandmilk··on Paper Apps
I don’t think this is sad at all. And I’m not sure how this can be described as bringing computer todo to paper.
cowsandmilk··on Apple Invites
No one other than the organizer needs anything Apple.
cowsandmilk··on New York claims a small victory in 'forever war on rats'
most of it doesn't cost any money. I believe "free" is an accurate description.
cowsandmilk··on CDC: Unpublished manuscripts mentioning certain topics must be pulled or revised
Half the point of the order is Trump’s admin wants gendered language. That is:

Pregnant person -> pregnant woman

Pregnant people -> pregnant women

cowsandmilk··on Bzip3: A spiritual successor to BZip2
I mean, hosting downloads that have been compressed with this seems fine. I have the original, I just want a smaller version for those downloading.
cowsandmilk··on Three AM 911 call, 9 AM salesman
I highly doubt Matt Haughey is correct about pulsepoint being the source of this information. The source was almost certainly services that scan the public radio broadcast of emergency communications. As a first correction, pulsepoint isn’t a company. It is a nonprofit. Obviously nonprofits can sell data, but it is clear Haughey didn’t go very deep in his research to get such a basic item wrong.
