cowsandmilk··on Waiting for dawn in search: Search index, Google rulings and impact on Kagi
Licensing their index doesn’t change that.
cowsandmilk··on California is free of drought for the first time in 25 years
1. Trump’s order in 2020 had nothing to do with fire, so it doesn’t support your position that this has anything to do with fires.

2. The water management plan has nothing to do with where water flows to fight fires.

3. A legal fight in 2020 is not caused by a bill that was passed in 2025.

> there would be no drought in 2020

That’s not how droughts work. A drought is a lack of rainfall. Moving water can reduce the problems caused by a drought, but it cannot prevent a drought.

cowsandmilk··on California is free of drought for the first time in 25 years
They don’t have to be grown in the desert
cowsandmilk··on Cloudflare zero-day: Accessing any host globally
All their examples rely on having poorly configured origins. At least the PHP and Tomcat ones might be blocked by a WAF, but the Next.js one would rely on the WAF blocking responses that included secrets (which I’m not sure they do).
cowsandmilk··on Apple is fighting for TSMC capacity as Nvidia takes center stage
Apple doesn’t operate the fab, TSMC does. Apple doesn’t shove anyone out of the way, TSMC makes those decisions. It is weird to blame Apple.
cowsandmilk··on Allow me to introduce, the Citroen C15
A 1984 Ford Ranger with a bed cap would compare favorably to the C15.
cowsandmilk··on Flock Hardcoded the Password for America's Surveillance Infrastructure 53 Times
Which is definitely the case for flock and likely for other companies.
cowsandmilk··on AI coding assistants are getting worse?
“The Emperor Has No Clothes” squarely fits in the definition of sycophants.
cowsandmilk··on Why I left iNaturalist
Works fine on my iPhone…
cowsandmilk··on Why I left iNaturalist
You hit the nail on the head. The separate “power user” interface is the web app on a desktop.
cowsandmilk··on The data center boom is concentrated in the U.S.
What fixed costs of the grid? In Northern Virginia, we’re constantly adding substations and transmission lines because the grid isn’t a fixed cost when you’re building data centers constantly; it quickly becomes a variable cost.
cowsandmilk··on BYD Sells 4.6M Vehicles in 2025, Meets Revised Sales Goal
I like this quote from Dan Wang's 2025 letter:

> Part of the reason that China’s stock market trends sideways is that everyone’s profits are competed away. Big Tech might enjoy the monopolistic success smiled upon by Peter Thiel, coming almost to genteel agreements not to tread too hard upon each other’s business lines. Chinese firms have to fight it out in a rough-and-tumble environment, expanding all the time into each other’s core businesses, taking Jeff “your margin is my opportunity” Bezos with seriousness.

cowsandmilk··on Stepping down as Mockito maintainer after ten years
In part, you’re right, but there’s a practical difference between mocking and a good dummy version of a service. Take DynamoDB local as an example: you can insert items and they persist, delete items, delete tables, etc. Or in the Ruby on Rails world, one often would use SQLite as a local database for tests even if using a different DB in production.

Going further, there’s the whole test containers movement of having a real version of your dependency present for your tests. Of course, in a microservices world, bringing up the whole network of dependencies is extremely complicated and likely not warranted.

cowsandmilk··on Ultrasound Cancer Treatment: Sound Waves Fight Tumors
Major damage tends to cause a much larger immune response than a vaccination. That said, they do have therapeutic cancer vaccines that present proteins from cancer (sometimes patient-specific) with adjuvants to help stimulate the immune response.
cowsandmilk··on Ultrasound Cancer Treatment: Sound Waves Fight Tumors
?? HistoSonics first target was the liver, second was kidney. Pancreas is the third organ they’ve targeted.
cowsandmilk··on Ultrasound Cancer Treatment: Sound Waves Fight Tumors
HistoSonics has studies published with 50 patients. Their upcoming study with 5000 liver patients obviously will give more information, but we already have some.

And with that said, these studies are more relevant than the top of thread linking to a review from 2011 looking at papers from 2005-2006 for ultrasound cavitation causing metastases.

cowsandmilk··on Logging sucks
Horrid advice at the end about logging every error, exception, slow request, etc if you are sampling healthy requests.

Taking slow requests as an example, a dependency gets slower and now your log volume suddenly goes up 100x. Can your service handle that? Are you causing a cascading outage due to increased log volumes?

Recovery is easier if your service is doing the same or less work in a degraded state. Increasing logging by 20-100x when degraded is not that.

cowsandmilk··on AWS CEO says replacing junior devs with AI is 'one of the dumbest ideas'
He said the same thing four months ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44972151
cowsandmilk··on VA Linux: The biggest dotcom IPO
What do you view as the generations between Slashdot/Digg and HN?
cowsandmilk··on 4 billion if statements (2023)
How horridly inefficient, he should have just flipped a Boolean on each iteration.
cowsandmilk··on Deprecate like you mean it
Please don’t do this. If you want to remove the function, remove it and insist on its removal when people complain. Don’t gradually break people.
cowsandmilk··on Bag of words, have mercy on us
Title is confusing given https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bag-of-words_model

But even more than that, today’s AI chats are far more sophisticated than probabilistically producing the next word. Mixture of experts routes to different models. Agents are able to search the web, write and execute programs, or use other tools. This means they can actively seek out additional context to produce a better answer. They also have heuristics for deciding if an answer is correct or if they should use tools to try to find a better answer.

The article is correct that they aren’t humans and they have a lot of behaviors that are not like humans, but oversimplifying how they work is not helpful.

cowsandmilk··on Leaving Intel
If you look at many of his recent blog entries, it is clear he has felt the need to quantify his impact to prove he isn’t less effective as a remote employee in Australia working for a company in the US.
cowsandmilk··on Leaving Intel
Definitely feels like someplace with GPUs that will let him work remotely.
cowsandmilk··on Frank Gehry has died
Beyond sharing a first name, they don’t share much in common. And Frank Lloyd Wright died about the time Frank Gehry started.
cowsandmilk··on Cloudflare outage on December 5, 2025
> Rollouts likely take much longer

Cloudflare’s own post says the configuration change that resulted in the outage rolled out in seconds.

cowsandmilk··on Cloudflare outage on December 5, 2025
Cloudflare had already decided this was a rule that could be rolled out using their gradual deployment system. They did not view it as being so urgent that it required immediate global roll out.
cowsandmilk··on Cloudflare Down Again – and DownDetector Is Also Down
I’m sick of people saying this. The truth at every cloud provider:

1. There were outages under the old guard.

2. The new guard is operating systems that are larger than what the old guard operated.
