cowmix··on 1990 Impact Electric Drag Race [video]
I know a guy who worked at the local Saturn dealership here in Phx in the late 90s/early 00s. He said whenever they had more than one EV1 in for service, they would have EV1 races at night. People would FIGHT over who would be the drivers.
cowmix··on OpenAI’s CEO says the age of giant AI models is already over
On the Lex Fridman podcast, he pretty much admitted he's not an AI (per se) and isn't the most excited about the tech (as he could be).
cowmix··on AI-enhanced development makes me more ambitious with my projects
Same here. I've done a few little projects with ChatGPT4 in my back pocket. I've been able to give more aggressive timelines, more features -- and I've been able to hit those goals with ease. Probably the first time in my life I've been able to over promise AND over deliver.

Also, the final product (with documentation) has been complete and pretty amazing.

cowmix··on Show HN: Use ChatGPT, Bing and Bard in one app
I feel bad for Bard, because to me it is a fraction of the functionality and usefulness of ChatGPT (so far). This app won't help Bard at all.
cowmix··on Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence: Early Experiments with GPT-4
Conversely, after using ChatGPT-4 (and generally loving it) -- I'm at peace with this maybe fact.
cowmix··on Twitter was down
"Meet the new Boss, same as the old Boss" -- and that's a slam on Elon who promised a ton of things like open sourcing the algorithm, etc. All I get now is a bunch of right-wing weirdo crap in my feed that I didn't subscribe to or ask for.

And this thing he was complaining about back in May, he completely f'd it up post-purchase:

cowmix··on Shoichiro Toyoda, who turned Toyota into global automaker, has died
I guess I understand why Toyota hasn't gone full-hog into EVs. There's a lot of life left in their hybrid and ICE drivetrains.

What I don't understand is why whatever BEVs they have tried so far, have been pretty crappy. For instance, the bZ4X is a total joke in almost all aspects -- features, range, etc.

cowmix··on Tesla to open some superchargers to other vehicles
Electrify America's network is pretty bad, top to bottom. Payment processing is just the tip of the iceberg in how much it blows.
cowmix··on Tesla to open some superchargers to other vehicles
I'm not a super fan of Musk lately but the White House has done zero PR for Tesla since Biden took office. This is first.
cowmix··on Tesla to open some superchargers to other vehicles
As a Model Y owner I just rented a Polestar to do a 72 hrs, 800 mile trip -- just to evaluate the experience. I missed my Y for many reasons however the trip went well overall but the Electrify America charging infrastructure leaves much to be desired. HOWEVER, their rate pre kwh can be 30% cheaper at peak times so I just bought the CCS adapter so I can optionally use those chargers -- even when cross country driving in my Tesla.
cowmix··on The Mysteries by Bill Watterson
He's NOT the illustrator of the book. THAT'S interesting.
cowmix··on Does Google need a new CEO?
Seriously, this example perfectly illustrates Google at its worst.
cowmix··on Pre-seed, seed startups with employees in office have higher revenue growth
FWIW, the company I work for went hiring crazy as soon as we committed 100% to full remote a few years before COVID.
cowmix··on Blender moves from Phabricator to Gitea
I wonder how Gitea will hold up to all the traffic? Even Gitea hosts their stuff on Github.
cowmix··on Microsoft announces new Bing and Edge browser powered by upgraded ChatGPT AI
Google is the new Xerox.

cowmix··on How to build a Linux-based wireless router out of spare parts (1998)
At the time, using KA9Q on top of DOS was also a great way to accomplish the same outcome.
cowmix··on Netheads vs. bellheads redux: the strange victory of SIP over the telephone
Always good to listen to this...

cowmix··on Show HN: Signal-Android – A fork of Signal that provides SMS support
If your fork takes off, I (and others) would love to help contribute. Things like ChromeOS/Android table support (which many forks have added in the past) and being able to use an Android phone/tablet as a link device would be great.
cowmix··on Area 120, Google’s in-house incubator, severely impacted by Alphabet mass layoff
Which makes the fact they seem so flat-footed by ChatGPT seem so insane. They invented or partially invented all this crap.

I think they were afraid this tech would cannibalize their existing offerings and wanted to slow-roll things. Now they're sorta f'd.

cowmix··on Ask HN: Has anyone here turned around their life in their 40s?
As someone who has kids, wife, dogs, etc (and happy) -- I'm still envious of your ability to make ANY change you want w/o having to clear it with anyone. Just do it! :-)

Also, I highly encourage you to watch this Ken Burn FLW documentary. You'll see a guy who did his best work after he was 50:

cowmix··on Valve is paying open-source developers to work on Proton, Mesa, and more
Valve is using the 'wrong' AMD gpu driver.
cowmix··on Valve is paying open-source developers to work on Proton, Mesa, and more
I keep it docked (mostly) and it works great.

My ONLY beef is that the AMD drivers do not work 100% with Blender so you don't get the accelerated Cycles rendering. Otherwise, it is great.

cowmix··on Valve is paying open-source developers to work on Proton, Mesa, and more
I bought Steam games and a Steam Deck just to support Valve... and I'm not really a gamer. However, the Deck has turned out to be a pretty good computing device.
cowmix··on The factory that only builds white Toyota Land Cruisers
My 2013 Volt has 150+ K miles - the engine runs like new. I've never touched the brakes, only 2 oil changes, etc.
cowmix··on Kite is saying farewell and open-sourcing its code
I tried it. Ironically, it was pretty good for Powershell and so so for Python (in my case at least).
cowmix··on Windows Subsystem For Linux a.k.a. WSL 1.0.0 released
I've done A LOT of performance tests of running ML tasks (via Docker) on WSL vs raw Ubuntu on the same hardware. The performance of WSL is about the same as native - some tasks are actually faster, some slower -- but net out to be the same. These tasks include: compiling a Docker image (1 hour), deinterlacing video with a NN, Open Whisper, etc.
cowmix··on Tesla rival Rivian posts losses of $1.7B, with worse to come
Here in AZ I see a lot of them too.
cowmix··on LGP-30 found in basement, the same model of drum computer programmed by “Mel”
In 1990 I bought a PDP 11/70 at a garage sale in AZ. It was big, heavy and sucked tons of power. I ALMOST got BSD to boot on it.
cowmix··on Open letter to Gitea
I use gitea and I do some proselytizing for it.

I do care if many people who are "doing" for an OS project are not informed with or have a choice in regards to the "brand" of the project. Sure, we can all fork this project (which started out as a fork) but it would be nice of people played nice and so we can all stay with the current fork we love.

Having said all this, I need to read up on this because this might be a nothing burger. My comments are, in general, my expectations of how OS projects should work.

cowmix··on 5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Near San Jose, CA
I flew to the bay area for the first time in spring of '90 for a business trip. I was driving in my rental car with my paper street map(s). I went to cross the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge and, well, a lot of was gone because of the quake.
